@@provostparkpass to asnwer your question regarding the culture thing about waving out of the train and people stare at you. Don't take it personally. The Dutch are not used to this. We are known to be (sometimes very) direct and be really down to earth. So we tend to be more closed to ourselves or less spontanious. The best way to describe it is by a famous Dutch saying "Just act normal, than you'll act crazy enough" The people who stare at you while you were waving, they just thought to themselves "Who's that? I don't know him, so why is he waving at me? What did I do?".

Anton Pieck designed the Efteling. He was an artist and made illustrations in a Dickins style. You can still buy artwork on calendars and postcards from his hand. That same style he used in the Efteling. Like many Dutch people, I have happy childhood memories from the Efteling.❣️

Thank you for visiting our local little park. The Efteling has grown organically. In 1952 it was no more than 10 fairytales a playground and a restaurant. I wont bore you with the full history of how the Efteling became the Efteling. The Efteling list somewhere between 30 and 35 attractions and places to see next to all the small thing that are not listed and needs to be discovered by the visitor. They have one major rule for planning what the do and where. Only 11% may be build up. 89% needs to return to nature. In essence the Efteling is a nature park. That is the main reason for so much nature and small wildlife in the park. The Efteling has no shareholders and does not need to produce profit. Most of what the make goes back into the park. They also do not use outside money to grow. The Efteling is huge. It hold a lot more ground then the park itself. At the moment there are plans to double the size of the Efteling Park. They do already have permission to expand the park to the east and west.

If they go above that, the Efteling needs to pay a fine for each visitor above that ammount. This is due to European laws regarding the enviroment.

For the Dutch the Efteling runs through our veins. Many of us went there as a toddler, as a kid, as a teen, in our twenties, as a parent and as a grandparent and all those age stages play their part every time we revisit. And even when we reach the age where only rollercoasters count, we still treasure and won’t forget to pay a visit to Fairytale Forest, listening to the musical fly agarics playing Bach like when we were 3.

Quick summary of the horse show's story origin: it goes back to the Eighty Years' War (Dutch Revolt against the Spanish). The 'bad guy' is wearing a Spanish 'cabasset' helmet. The Dutch defeated the Spanish by flooding the battle fields with water from the rivers (depicted at the end of the show). Results: Peace of Münster -Spain recognizes the independence of the Dutch Republic (Protestant) -Spain retains the Southern Netherlands (Catholic) -Dutch overseas expansion starting in the 17th century, which mainly affected the Portuguese colonial empire (incl Japan. Small reference in the current popular show "Shogun" ep.1)

Don't forget that the American fairy tales are based on ancient European ones. Disney however took off the 'sharp' parts. We have visited a lot of parts in the US, 15, European and Japan but we think Efteling is the cosiest and nicest. And even when you count all the rides it's also one of the larger ones especially when you compare with Paris. Because you have Disney but you have to pay for the MGM's. (same in USA)

Waving to people is definitely a cultural difference. Dutch are just really direct. They wave to you if they want to and if they are in the same "zone". They dont mean to be impolite. Just see it like this : Americans say when they meet people in an exagerated way "how are you doing? " Even if the dont mean it. Dutch people will not do that so easily. Only if they really want to know it. And Dutch have the saying (iĺl try to translate it to English) "Just act naturally, that is allready crazy enough" But it's not impoliteness, they are just not used to be so extravert. Most Europeans have that. Btw being Dutch, i like your videos and your enthousiasm! 😃

It probably wouldve been worse if he did it in Denmark, since doing that up here would be like drawing attention and elevating yourself above the crowd like "Oh hey you look at me, wave at me in response to me waving at you", which in the eyes of a Dane would just be considered selfish and rude.

As a fellow Dutchman I'd say that's true. I would wave back though, because it's in an amusement park and you can see people having fun, why not wave back and make it even better? But in normal life it would indeed raise a lot of questions, is this guy a bit crazy, does he think he knows me?? And yes, if you ask a Dutchman "How are you?", be prepared to hear his life story and how much is little toe is hurting lately. We hear it as a genuine question, not just politeness :)

She's absolutely right, most people from here have been to Efteling at least once in their lives and every Dutch person will always be so eager to tell you about their amazing memories there. Something you might like to look into is Anton Pieck, the very first designer of the Efteling and an amazing Dutch artist. He created the first ten fairytales in the fairytaleforest, back when the park was still a nature park. The park is located in a forest and as it started as a park to just take a walk in, and from time to time mysteriously discover some fairytales, taking good care of the nature has always been very important to Efteling. They even have their own landscape architects to decide on the most fitting plants for around every ride and fairytale! Anton Piecks style is still the guideline for every attraction. His use of colour, shape and detail is one of the things that make you integrate into the stories so much, it's like the buildings have already been there for thousands of years, and you just accidentally found them. But also music, everywhere you go, precisely created for every mood, makes you feel at home in the park. When Efteling started getting bigger, with more thrilling rides, the artists who designed them even worked on the rides after working hours, just for fun. They viewed upon Efteling as a "hobby that got out of hand", as their artwork, which they wanted to cherish. And you can still feel that today. They put in more work and details than is needed to get people to the park, not out of economic reasons, but out of their love for imagination. If you read my super long comment, you might've noticed I'm a huge Efteling nerd haha As someone who wants to study arts, the park fascinates me. And I have loved to see it fascinated you all too :) (Oh and by the way, as one of the other comments stated, we Efteling nerds indeed do love to answer questions about the park, so if you have any, ask away!)

About the train 'incident': As a North American (which I'm assuming you are, correct me if I'm wrong) you may be used to train trips feeling like a special adventure. Here in the Netherlands, trains are a very normal part of everyday life. For example, it's one of the most popular transport methods for daily cummute. That's most likely why, even in a thempark like the Efteling, we are so used to trains that it's not special enough to wave to each other.

I want you to know we have been making a habit to now watch you on our TV as we are loving all of the Parks you are now doing and man, all the work you did at Disney world. That was an eye opener . I have a hard time with the humidity and get sick when I do Disneyworld. I related to your sickness when I watched you years ago when you got sick at Disneyworld. I too get yucky there.

I was so happy that you took a photo with me and my fiance jokes that that was the most memorable part of the trip XP. (For context: my finace proposed on that trip in front of the Disney Christmas castle haha) It's all jokes but I was definitely on a high after meeting you XP

Just got back from my own trip to the Efteling, and just wanted to indulge in some more of the joy it brings because for me this park feels almost like a second home, I've been very often and know it by heart. Even though I know all there is to do and to see, it stays fun to repeat time and time again. But what I've discovered is that watching people experience it for the first time without knowing at all what to expect is so touching to me for some reason, it's like you're feeling what I was feeling when I was 7 years old, it's wonderful! I'm so glad you and your family enjoyed your trip! As a Dutch person I can confidently say that this park is indeed a huge pride to me! Thank you for visiting and sharing your experience with us!

I have only gotten to the Vogel Rok part of the video, but just want to say that that was the first rollercoaster I’ve been on, at age 18. All graduating classes at my school went to De Efteling for a day, on a normal school day. We arrived early, right after the park opened, and for much of the day it was as if we had the entire park for ourselves. That day we did Vogel Rok once or twice, Joris en de Draak twice, De Vliegende Hollander once, and that was enough rollercoaster excitement for a day for me. It’s been 10 years since I last visited, but seeing this video is bringing back many memories, from going there as a young child with my parents to going there with friends as a teenager. I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. :)

Regarding pancakes, my personal opinion: home you can eat with your hands, in restaurants you generally use utensils or roll it up like a burrito, at De Efteling you can be your inner child and use your hands. Growing up when my mum made pancakes I generally ate them by rolling them up and eating them with my hands, except for the more savoury ones with bacon or apple, as those are difficult to roll up. Those I ate with fork and knife.

Dutch people generally don't get offended easily, but we also have a habit of being direct, we have a saying here " Doe nu maar normaal, dan ben je al genoeg " which roughly translates to, " Just act normal, you're crazy enough as it is " I havend been to the Efteling since i was a teenager, watching this makes me want to go again 😂

Comparing Disneyland or MK and Efteling is a bit hard,...Disney is more pristine,...Efteling tries to make everything look more authentic and worn out. It's both immersive in their own way. There is no better in this case imho just different approach in theming. I think you can compare Animal Kingdom the best with Efteling in the sense of authentic immersiveness. :)

Went to Efteling in Feb and loved it, can't wait to go back when Danse Macabre opens. His main (documented) inspiration comes from "Tivoli" in Copenhagen and "Madurodam" in .......the Netherlands. It is however well known that Disney Company asked and received help from "Efteling" when designing their Paris park. It is also not like Walt and their park designers lived in an isolated bubble. So a healthy exchange of plans, designs and ideas has taken place over the years.

Chris!!! We are so happy you are around! My husband tried texting you since your miss fortune in Shanghai to tell you about the Netherlands! Some cool things…. You guys missed the trash can sounds.. are actually asking for food in Dutch! This means, give them trash once and they thank you for the snack! Also there are two Fairy tails that give a nice souvenier for Miles. The Donkey gives a collectable coin and a the Chicken gives you and special egg. The Dark water coaster is the Flying Dutch man based based on true legend! And the Effteling has a castle like disney yet this one flies (the pagode). The fata morgana ride looks like Pirates of the Caribbean yet the animatronics are in a different way. Disney has mechanical animatronics while this ride is made of ropes like puppets. You also missed the Carnival festival ride which is iconic and is like a it’s small world version. It also has is sticky song! Plus there is the Carrousel which is one of the last steam original carrousels!!! Let us know we would love to meet you guys! We are fans of the parks in Europe !!
