After a quick beta, Proxmox VE 7 is ready to use. I take a look at the new features in the new version, and see how a upgrade goes and what potential issues you may have if you upgrade from 6.4 to 7.

A really handy feature that has kind of flown under the radar is that you can download ISOs (with checksum verification) directly to your storage through the web UI. Same for container templates.

Yesterday, I upgraded my 5-node PVE 6.4 cluster to 7. I made sure to backup all of the VM disk images from the PVE dump directories as well as /etc and /root of each node to a separate system outside of PVE just in case. I had 0 issues with the upgrade. The big part of this upgrade, as you mentioned, is the move to Debian 11, which isn't listed by Debian as stable just yet. I'm sure that was a bit of work. Now that they are on a more modern foundation, I'd expect to see more features added with 7.x updates. I have one problem I haven't been able to find a fix for... that I was curious if you had any clues about. Basically I had a Let's Encrypt cert on one of the nodes but when it came due for renewal, that system was no longer accessible from the outside world and I couldn't do a DNS-based renewal either. Anyhoo, I ended up just making a new self-signed cert which is what I had before switching to Let's Encrypt. After doing that, SPICE protocol-based access to all of my VMs no longer works except on one host. The issue relates to the SPICE client I'm using (virt-viewer) rejects the cert the connection file PVE generated was signed with... and as a result, refuses to connect. Unfortunately, virt-viewer doesn't have an option to ignore what it considers sub-standard certs. It isn't the fact that the certs are self-signed... but something else... what I'm not exactly sure. I've crawled through the forums and asked on IRC... and people have had this or very similar issues over years and manually creating all new certs has generally fixed it, but for some reason... it hasn't worked for me... and during the process of switching your certs out... the web-interface can temporarily break... until all of the systems are synced... so doing it multiple times is very frustrating. Of course, VNC connections with the noVNC javascript web-client work just fine... but VNC pales in comparison to SPICE. Every run into that sort of issue?

In my mind, the fact that Proxmox is a "smaller player" is a bonus. VMWare is great, if you're into ancient technology, and best practices. But I like modern solutions for modern problems, and that's where Proxmox really delivers. For example, any environment I'm working in is going to get ZFS to protect their VMs and file servers. Cryptoviruses are a real thing, and a lot of the damage can be detected and mitigated by using ZFS. I look like a goddamned super hero when a client calls me up and says, "OMG, I clicked a link I shouldn't have, and now all of our data is encrypted," I VPN in, run a command, and moments later all of their data is available again. Today, we have large businesses, with millions of dollars in revenue who can't do that because they're working off of technology and best practices from yesteryear. They get hit with a cryptovirus and the first thing they're looking at is deciding whether it's more expensive to restore from backup, or pay the ransom.

I tried Proxmox last week (v7), unfortunately I just couldn't get it to reliably work with my iSCSI on my Synology. Looks real promising. I'm sure if I was stronger with Linux I could have beaten some of the issues.
