I've known this terminology for decades and always hated it. The reason you've had trouble figuring it out is that it is incorrect. A reverse proxy and forward proxy operate in exactly the same direction. A reverse proxy does not operate in reverse relative to a forward proxy. Other terms like "load balancer" and the newer (but still not new) "web application firewall" are much better. I could accept "server side proxy" but I don't think that's ever been a commonly used term

An IT professional naturally thinks first about a group of clients while a software engineer naturally thinks first about the servers running the software. The name "reverse proxy" seems like it's based on an IT perspective. If I was in charge of naming everything in the world, I would flip the names "proxy" and "reverse proxy".

Excellent information about proxy servers. The fact the technology facilitates surveillance - by powerful people, causing its own unique harms. I wish you’d at least mention “this is creepy” and “please think hard about whether you want to facilitate this kind of surveillance, and then ask why, and be sure you get an answer you’re satisfied with”

Another instantaneously created fan here! Thanks for such a concise explanation. I've worked with proxies since a long time ago, but this was a very good explanation 👏 For some reason, the "reverse" part in the name of the reverse proxy never "clicked" on my mind, but saying like you did, on protecting servers instead of clients makes so much sense!. I never read a previous documentation saying it like that, and I read quite some, it always says forwarding traffic, but again, the reverse forwarding is a convoluted way to say just forwarding. Thanks!!

This explanation is, by all means, incomplete. Let me give you an example of the usage I personaly had to do of a reverse proxy. First of all let me introduce you to the context: I had to work on an HP Proliant Server, the client had a single public IP address available but two different websites which had to run on dedicated apache2 servers which in time where set to listen for a specific web address over the same ip. Well, I used ESXI first of all, to manage virtual servers on the physical hardware, and I installed 3 virtual servers, 2 of them where LAMP Servers (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) and the third one was a reverse proxy. I set the configuration in a way that all the incomming traffic was sent to the reverse proxy and then, through the reverse proxy I redirected the traffic based on the domain name (or web address) to the corresponding apache2 server. With this I'm trying to explain that another usage of a reverse proxy is to handle redirects in order to have multiple servers mounted on the same ip address but listening on different domain names.

The forward proxy example is more of a firewall and a proxy itself cannot hide the identity of a client as the forward headers still contain the info on who requested the data.
@davorzdralo8000
@davorzdralo8000 Жыл бұрын
So is the reverse proxy example, when in reality neither of them have anything to do with security. DDoS mitigation can be on reverse proxy, or not, that's completely beside the point, and "hiding IP addresses" of servers is not done because of security, it's mostly in order to distribute load over multiple servers transparently. All in all, pretty bad explanations.

@dougaltolan3017
@dougaltolan3017 Жыл бұрын
Location: Typically a proxy is not local, it's out on the Internet somewhere. NAT is performed locally, usually in a gateway router. The topology is not displayed very well in this video. As shown here both forward and reverse proxy would be a single machine (or function of a router) called a firewall. Load balancing tends to be more than you'd expect from a router though.

Your description of forward proxy and reverse proxy sound EXACTLY like what I've always been told a firewall and router do. So why would I need a proxy if I already have a router with good firewall rules? The one use case I can come up with is that I have multiple different websites -- all wanting to use the same port. A good proxy would be able to direct traffic to the appropriate server based on the domain name. I don't think a router and firewall alone could do that.

FORWARD PROXY BENEFITS - Reguates traffic out of a network - (private n/w - forward proxy - internet) 1. WebServer Does not know which client is making request - ip of proxy server is visible so - better security 2. Proxy can be used to log user activity 3. many schools an govt org restricts access to certain sites - connecting to proxy allows us to connect it to the sites 4. can store copies of websute (cache database inside proxy) - reduces latency REVERSE PROXY BENEFITS - Regulates traffic into a network - (internet - reverse proxy - private n / w of a company hosting webservices) 1.

I'm not sure I understand the need to define a specific Forward/Reverse Proxy, isn't the behavior by default to be both of those things at the same time ? In the forward proxy demonstration, traffic that is sourced inside to outside needs a return path from outside to in, at that point isn't the same proxy which was acting as a forward proxy now a reverse proxy ? I'm not sure I fully understand the specific differences.

Since its not a server, it has more time to deal with the attack. Also by using different DNS records in different countries/regions it is possible to direct requests to different proxies that then forward valid requests to the core servers.
