When I read "Theodore" my mind went to the Chipmunks: Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. The name was kind of dumb but I liked the look of that tulip shaped guitar. It's something new!

After what Gibson has been doing to Dean this seems very justified. Like I keep saying, if you want a Gibson you go buy a Gibson, the Dean hanging on the wall probably isn't going to be much of a threat. As for PRS fighting over a name, It's petty but Gibson needs a taste of their own medicine.

I was in the local music store last week, this Gibson was sitting there, I picked it up, it actually felt ok in the hands and played nice, but it's super fugly, I also noticed a fair bit of finish checking on the back of the neck, kinda weird, the checking was coming from the binding but only where the side dots were. I have seen a lot of new Gibsons with finish issues.

I’d imagine the McCarty estate should have the final say. Also it’s ridiculous that PRS thought they had a chance. Not only do the Theodore and McCarty models look nothing alike but if push comes to shove Ted McCarty’s legacy is with Gibson. Heck the only reason PRS cared about him was because his experience with Gibson. Also I’m a Fender guy and still highly respect PRS for what they contribute to luthier and guitar engineering.

Guitar companies suing others is pathetic! Especially as Gibson will sue a company for the single cut shape, like they did with PRS! If people can't tell the difference between them, then they are in a very small minority.

And yet PRS decided to at least start action here in this case… Gibson didn’t MAKE them object to a guitar which has a person’s first name 🤷🏼‍♂️ It just shows that this is the kind of thing big companies generally have a tendency to do. I also don’t quite see how PRS gets credit for deciding to drop this issue after all… if they want the high ground over Gibson don’t make an issue of it in the first place.

Gibson should fix their head stock and stop ripping off customers and suing smaller manufacturers. Those pickups and bridges are not good enough for the price. The fact that the epiphones sound pretty close should confirm this.

@@HunnysPlaylists That sounds like the start of an argument right there. Wood makes no difference. Plexiglas guitars sound the same as mahogany, and Maple guitars. Russ Ballard played a guitar made out of a solid billet aircraft aluminum when he was in Argent. Mark Farner played a Veleno guitar made almost entierly out of aluminum, after his Messenger started wearing out. The Messenger was largely metal. An aluminum neck with a tenon that was designed like a tuning fork. There you go. I await your rebuttal

@@onusgumboot5565 tonewood is denied for two reasons: 1) the "skeptic" community imploded and the remnant need new frontiers. 2) understanding tonewood requires abstract thinking (which is so hard-locked behind a high iq range that I think less than 30% of the population even qualifies for it).

I think the McCarty family had a legal right since it’s his name and they used it without permission but now that Gibson lost to Dean recently in a countersuit by Dean and has millions of dollars to keep legal battles in limbo PRS probably decided to back off because of the cost of legal battles….but I also wonder if this was a strategic move by PRS since Gibson has been trying to sue various companies over silly issues. Gibson did use Ted name without permission on a new guitar unlike old guitars they didn’t patent and maybe this was a move to wake up Gibson and show others can play this game. But I may be assuming too much.

PRS connection with the golden age of guitar of 50s-80s and the term vintage is connected with Ted McCarty. Without Ted, PRS doesn't have any credibility to be up with the top 2 guitar makers. Also, that gibson theodore is ugly but now that they won't ever be produced at least by gibson there value is super high now. It was worth that $2k now. In 20-30 years it will be 10x more of it's value.

so McCarty designed the guitar while being employed by Gibson, Gibson used a name which was not trademarked by PRS , yeah sure they decided their time was better spend on something else (or in other words their lawyers told them that they would not going to win). And yes the guitar is ugly, as was the V, Explorer, Modern at one point

Gibson makes like 3 or 4 guitars worth buying. A J45, LP standard, SG standard and ES335. They been making the same shit since their start. Definitely a boomer company with no new innovations. I own 2 Gibson SG's They're ok.

The MIJ Epiphone Elitist guitars and basses from the early to mid 2000s were better quality instruments than the Gibsons from that time, which is probably why Gibson quit making them. The instruments were equipped with Gibson USA pickups, CTS pots and Switchcraft jacks.

Yet when Gibson tries something new, the market reaction is "No thanks, I only want the exact same thing as I already have.". Given this attitude, I doubt that Gibson would sink money into new production lines when that money could be invested in new tooling and paying the staff better so they could ask them to give a shit about the products they are making, so that the customer could be assured that when they pick up a... No wait, it's Gibson. The customer and employees can go stuff 'emselves.
