The original Silver Sky was designed in conjunction with John Mayer to elevate a familiar guitar aesthetic with PRS‘s world-renowned innovation. I just bought one..the Dragonfruit. It’s unreal how good it is. I’ve played for 40 years and owned over a dozen Fender Strats. Had several USA Strats including a Clapton and an Eric Johnson with a rosewood fretboard. This SE Silver Sky smokes most Fenders. The Eric Johnson was my fave and this SE is better in some ways.

Very cool guitar but I still think the Schecter Nick Johnston is the best deal on a pro-quality traditional style strat-shaped 3 pickup guitar.

Other differences (some not so minor, but still a good deal): - Plastic nut on the SE. Bone nut on the original. - It's heavier. Around 8 lbs, while the orginal SS is consistently a bit above 7. 8 lbs is not heavy mind you. It's regular Strat territory, but it's something to note. - Edges of the fingerboard not really rolled (can be fixed pretty easily, but still a bit of work) - The neck shape is a bit different (besides the fingerboard radius) I'd hunt down a below 8 lbs one, replace the nut by a bone nut and use a bit of sand block on the fingerboard edges. And voilà, pretty freaking close to the original.

I've been playing for a couple years but I still don't understand the significance of a nut on the guitar or why the material of it matters

@@voidtremors5814 The job of the nut is to hold the strings in place so that they are properly aligned along the fretboard. The material matters because it affect the resonance of the strings, plus hopefully allows the tension of the strings to move freely if the nut is a hard material like bone which you will often read about. If you have a piece of cheap plastic, then the strings might get pinched in the material an not allow the strings to move as required. If the guitar happens to have a cheaper material and the nut is pinching the string some, then you can add a lubricant or nut sauce to help allow the string to move freely.

There’s a bunch on reverb with no preorder. Perhaps you could cancel and go that route. I always call and buy form out of state and save on No sales tax and the store usually sets up my guitars how I like if I ask them to.

@@hadi141 personal preference, i like them more quacky. Even on my shur (v70), a lot of times I wish they would sound more “quacky”. These SE ones feel more mid heavy. Quiet a departure from the big dippers that existed in the JM Fender signature guitars( those were very scooped, and had a nice quack sound). Still they are perfectly fine pickups, they seem rather nice for playing blues ( those mid frequencies come in hand I guess). Again, personal preference!

@@MrTelecosta they'll cut more in the mix. Most strats disappear in the mix even with a tube screamer. John dosent play in a trio anymore so he needs the extra midrange to push through the rythm guitars.

Watch Marry Spender video, she made a side by side with the US version, and pickups sound pretty similar, not 1:1, but close to each other’s, even more in a mix… so if you don’t like SE pickups it’s very likely you won’t like US pickups either.

I bought the SE hollowbody when it was released and the binding at the fretboard was squared-off, which was really not very comfortable, nothing like the high-end guitar. At $1K, though, it shouldn't feel like a cheap guitar. Is this any better? Thanks. edit: yes, I know it doesn't have binding, the question is really about the edge of the fretboard, whether or not it's rounded off

Hi, Rick. The Silver Sky is going to have a more rounded edge to it than the Hollowbody, or most other guitars with neck binding. Hi Bobby, thanks for watching! The fact that you ask is pretty telling! Nick D’Virgilio, our in-house drum virtuoso, played a MIDI drum track into PreSonus Studio One for me using a Roland V-Kit. I used the sounds from the Toontrack Superior Drummer Legacy of Rock collection (engineered by the legendary Eddie Kramer) for the track. As a bonus, the bass track was Toontrack EZbass. Saw a video and a bunch of photographs of one of the white guitars you sent out on a Paul Reid Smith forum on Facebook this morning. The thing was trashed. Absolute garbage quality control. Apparently sweet water is not doing their due diligence when it comes to checking over the instruments before they send them. PRS it looks like drop the ball big time with this guitar as well..

The reason you don't like the Silver Sky SE is it's not a True 22 fret Strat like guitar like Leo's Fender Strat is with the sweet neck pickup placed in the middle of the 12th fret to the bridge. The Silver Sky core model is like a Loe's Original Strat with a sweet neck pickup placed in the middle of the 12th fret to the bridge. Strats, Tele's Les Paul's all have the sweet neck pickup placed in the middle of the 12th fret to the bridge. This Silver Sky SE will never be any good and it is by PRS design, it is like the difference between a PRS Custom 24 and a Custom 22. Through away the Silver Sky SE before it drives you crazy trying to figure this out. They Tricked us all.
