John Mayer is one of the greatest guitarists active today. I was blown away the first time going to one of his live shows. Somehow he makes everything work, even if it’s out of tune. And it is bluesy: the “blue note” is usually just slightly off key and it’s an art form that the bluesmen popularized.

Buying any guitar is difficult at the moment because covid shut down the entire industry and they're playing catch up. Every physical guitar shop I go into is severely lacking in selection. John Frusciante recorded Under the Bridge with an out of tune B string as well and it sounds amazing. I also recall years ago reading Rick Rubin say about John that he was the most knowledgeable musician he had ever worked with at the time and Rick Rubin as we all know works with pretty much every major act out there. That's a hell of a compliment coming from a guy like Rick Rubin. I also remember Rick going on in the interview about all the different scales and keys and the way they interact with each other which Frusciante knows quite well. Not at all surprised an expert player like Mayer is also experimenting with out of tune notes on purpose to deliver amazing music. The depth of knowledge one must have to do this well, I wonder if it's happening by accident or if they intend on creating these on purpose. Extremely interesting topic though. Please do more on this.

Microbends and tones are the “soul” in playing guitar imo. It’s imitating a human voice which gives it soul. It’s those tiny imperfections that when you hear it, you know it’s not a computer. No offense to those who shred scales all day, but a computer can imitate that no problem. Carefully placed microbends, slides, vibrato, and other techniques is much harder to imitate. Great video.

Kinda like the concept in that video with victor wooten u have . It’s about feel the key is important and can dictate a lot but when you can manipulate pitch you can pretty much Bend the instrument to your will thus making a part that is more musically expressive and has more personality. Making a wrong note right and all that . All that nuance really adds to music and gets people interested and enjoying the sounds you make . I really enjoy your videos that go in depth with cool concepts like this bro 🤙🏾

I play out of tune too it's really a unique way to play. Lots of the classic guitarist did it too. I found out how to do it by not having a tuner growing up so I tuned it to what I liked. I hate when people grab my guitar and says it out of tune they act like I'm crazy. But they don't realize you don't have to go by books of a electriconics telling you what to do. It's really dumb how most people think there the best but can't do anything like the guitar Gods. Because they try to much to be like the books instead of finding there own sound.

So I bought a Silver Sky not that long ago. Apparently I should have waited*? Though they aren't sold at my local guitar store, and the ones that are there (non SE) cost 500 dollars more than when I bought mine so... maybe Silver Sky linings. Yeah, I just wrote that, what of it. Oh, and while I would have loved the pink, mine is the same one that's in Wild Blue, so that still feels cool (bought it before the music video, so just a happy coincidence). EDIT: *Just did some research, and apparently the SE's are the cheaper models not made in the US. Cool to see options, and I'm sure either version is still a dope ass guitar, but it feels weird I had to Google a bit to find out (the PRS website is rather lax in details across the board). Oh, very cool video by the way (both in info and the awesome camera and editing work at the beginning).

I heard John Mayer do some kind of phone video vlog lesson thing a couple of years ago and he said that he just bends by ear, not to the half tone or full tone up. I remember this because I've always been an ear player and the whole shall and must thing (Thow shalt bend to either a half tone or full tone above!) just seemed antithetical to the feel of music. Not that some folks don't do that out of sloppiness, and it is important to be able to tell a half tone or full tone by ear, but being intentionally free in your expression is a part of music for me.
