This video is very accurate. I have two mulberry trees (side by side) in my back-yard and one day I decided to get rid of them. I cut both to the ground and sprayed black paint on the truck. One tree died and one grew back. The tree that survived grew back in a vengeance as there was no other tree competitors near by. It grew back to its original size (about 9 feet) within two years. It doesn't matter how much or when I prune the mulberry tree it keeps coming back. It even grew an offspring 7 feet away! It even grew another offspring at the crack that is in front of the house between me and my neighbor's property. The birds like them and my rabbit eats the leaf. I was also told that shrimp likes the mulberry leaves as well so I decided to keep this tree.

Most are cutting grown but I grafted some of the shahtoots. All are slow/bad healers. The mangos/avos/jacks etc all heal well here but not the mulberries. My 2 mulberry trees are still small, and I want to grow them as" bushes" but still produce some mulberries to eat. My 2 trees were grown from cuttings and both of them have 2 main branches each that are kind of getting long and "leggy". I was thinking of already cutting these 2 branches shorter in order to prevent " legginess" and to promote more branching further down the base of the tree...but when I googled "pruning mulberry trees", many warned cutting more than 2 inches because it would cause "bleeding" where you cut it. Then I saw your post on Survival Gardener about pruning mulberry trees... I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice on how to prune them in the tropics? Is it safe for them if I just cut them? Would "bleeding" from the cut branch be a problem? And if so, is there a way to prevent it or stop it?

@davidthegood6 жыл бұрын
Mulberry trees take a very long time to fruit from seed. Some are probably female but haven't outgrown juvenility yet. Some mulberries root easily, others will not. Often, you'll stick cuttings and the cuttings will leaf out and even bear fruit so you'll think they rooted - but they haven't. I had luck rooting them in a mist house, but often they wouldn't root easily.
@eatyourgarden6 жыл бұрын
Just stick the cuttings in some soil, and just keep moist. Do this when they drop all of their leaves. They will start growing roots when they break dormancy. This works with all varieties. :)

Cedar trees will die too. I accidentally killed 3 of the 6 on the back of my yard.. it was right when I moved in and they were neglected for years.. I didn't think about their livelihood when pruning.. I just cut without knowledge (not thinking). Atleast I still have 1/2. Got vines, black walnut and mulberry trees going next to them. Cedar doesn't rot either, vines have somewhere to go, ha.

How much planting space from other trees would say I would need for my red mulberry? Love the video the best one by far!

How fast do cuttings grow i bought some and they're only like 8 inches high i don't want to plant them too small and have the dogs go "oh a stick." I bought a pakistan and a black beauty

I got dwarf everbearing cuttings and they got leaves in 1 week. I was totally surprised. I had 18 cuttings and 16 out of 18 became trees.

Hi David, we have a Mulberry in our front yard. I guess there are a number of different types, but ours has large heart shaped leaves with small sawtooth edges. The fruit gets real dark purple. I was trying to find out if the leaves are edible of the type. I saw a lot online about some mulberry leaves being really good especially for diabetics. Can you tell me what kind I have and if the leaves are edible?

No, I'm not good at identifying the varieties.

All mulberry leaves (as well as the unripe fruit) are mildly toxic when fresh/raw, but perfectly fine to eat when cooked as a green, or dried and used as tea.

My goats punish any wild mulberry they find but these trees don’t die I have a few trees that are a few years old and a only few feet tall, they’ll kill them eventually but it’s a wonder how they hang on for so long

Is that a metal detector ? I know it's off topic but would like to know what things you find there...
@davidthegood6 жыл бұрын
Yep. I go hunting now and again. I've found nothing interesting, really. Old chunks of lead, bottle caps, bolts, a rusted out machete, metal bars, old links of chain, etc. I keep hoping to find some Spanish gold or a piece of 8, but no luck.

How about a 3yo black cherry tree that I at-least-slightly over-pruned during the freeze a few weeks ago? The branches are nearly an inch in diameter and black cherry aphids had attacked it last summer. It's pretty bare-bones right now.

Black cherry trees are different. They love to grow almost straight up. I haven't tried keeping them under control. The last one I planted is probably 50' now.

But, you probably didn't hurt it at all.

weather has been so warm in the last month that my mulberry tree is already leafing out. Is it too late to prune now ?
@davidthegood6 жыл бұрын
No, but I would wait until after it fruits at this point.
@jeannethornburg26946 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I went out to look it over better and it's already covered in little green berries. Thanks
