I've been sitting for an hour watching videos on how to prune my Pinky Winky Hydrangea. This video does the best job of explaining exactly how to pick the cuts. I know to trim out week wood or wood that grows in the wrong direction. But John clearly shows how and why to pick the location of your cut.

Yes! I think experts become so automatic with their cuts they forget they're actually making decisions each time. But we need that process slowed down, explained, & demonstrated several times to actually see the decision-making process re WHERE to cut, & then bring us in very close to watch the actual execution of the cut. This video did that very well.

This answered by question. It's really pruning not deadheading. I tried deadheading but stems so fragile many break. I'm more comfortable now, inherited this type.

I love the paniculata hydrangeas( vanilla strawberry and lime light ) I always mess up my macrophillas . We threw all our endless summers out due to frustration. I will keep watching CTScaper.

Can you post a video on how to prune a Big Leaf Hydrangea? Also I've been told two different things regarding this shrub. One is that you leave the old wood because it will flower on the old wood. But then I was told to remove the old wood because it is taking away from the nutrients the new wood needs to grow. Which one is correct? Thanks in advance for your help with this.

Can I prune a standard hydrangea that was just planted this year (about 6 months ago) in the same manner as what's described in your video? There were a lot of blooms this year and there are a lot of new buds on the stems, I'm just now too sure how far back to prune. I just got a beautiful pinky winky. It being the beginning of August it's an awkward time to transplant some plants to make room for it where I want it. Can I wait with the shrub in it's 5 gal bucket until fall to transplant? Not sure how to proceed.

My tree hydrangea is about 6 feet tall, one stem. Top has 4 small branches that blooms droop down because they are weak. Can I cut the stem off at about 4 feet and have it start over? I would leave several buds on down the stem. Thanks Carole

I just found your channel. I am in Canada zone 4 and have a Hydrangea in a north facing bed. I am not afraid to prune but I dont know the species so does it matter? The buds arent breaking yet, and I would lie to cut off at least a foot .It is an established tree/shrub, about 5 ft tall and it did get lots of blooms last yr, I just want to make is shorter so I can see out of my bedroom window.

You explained very clearly how to prune my pee gee hydrangea, so now I feel more confident to prune it correctly. I also have three Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Strawberry in a tree form. The vanilla strawberry hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so you're fine to trim it either in fall or early spring, before they really start to grow. They're easy hydrangeas in that regard. Good luck!

Annabelle flowers on new wood. You can cut it back as much, or as little, as you like at the beginning of the season. Some people cut Annabelle back to the ground every fall.

Incrediball blooms on new wood and is a more 'perennial' type shrub. You can cut the shrub to the ground over the winter and you'll be fine or just thin out the weak branches in the spring.

Absolutely! You can prune until the buds are 1/2" long and later if you don't mind losing some flowers.
