In this Bonsai video, Attila and I prune a large Hornbeam Bonsai. From hedge to Bonsai, this Yamadori (or Urbandori) Hornbeam was collected by Attila Csintalan from a friends Garden. It has been in this wooden box for the past two years untouched until today where we give the tree its first styling.
Because we know that Hornbeams respond well to pruning, we give this tree quite a hard prune in order to develop good branching and ramification in the future. As we prune, with the majority of the tree we are pruning back to the first set of leaves. By doing this, the tree's energy is redirected toward the remaining buds, stimulating their growth and development. This method is particularly useful when shaping the tree's branches, as it allows for the creation of more intricate and defined branch structures.
We take off the wire that was previously on the tree so that it doesn't scar the branches. Re-wire a branch to improve the overall shape of the tree and we also cut a stub off to improve the overall taper of the trunk.
I think Hornbeam is an excellent choice for Bonsai as they have a naturally compact growth habit, small leaves, and fine twigs, which create a sense of proportion and balance in various Bonsai designs. They respond very well to pruning and shaping techniques, readily producing new growth from old wood. Their flexible branches make them easy to wire and position and they also have attractive autumn foliage, ranging from yellow to orange and red!
