In this Bonsai video, Attila and I prune a large Hornbeam Bonsai. From hedge to Bonsai, this Yamadori (or Urbandori) Hornbeam was collected by Attila Csintalan from a friends Garden. It has been in this wooden box for the past two years untouched until today where we give the tree its first styling.
Because we know that Hornbeams respond well to pruning, we give this tree quite a hard prune in order to develop good branching and ramification in the future. As we prune, with the majority of the tree we are pruning back to the first set of leaves. By doing this, the tree's energy is redirected toward the remaining buds, stimulating their growth and development. This method is particularly useful when shaping the tree's branches, as it allows for the creation of more intricate and defined branch structures.
We take off the wire that was previously on the tree so that it doesn't scar the branches. Re-wire a branch to improve the overall shape of the tree and we also cut a stub off to improve the overall taper of the trunk.
I think Hornbeam is an excellent choice for Bonsai as they have a naturally compact growth habit, small leaves, and fine twigs, which create a sense of proportion and balance in various Bonsai designs. They respond very well to pruning and shaping techniques, readily producing new growth from old wood. Their flexible branches make them easy to wire and position and they also have attractive autumn foliage, ranging from yellow to orange and red!

Big old tree to work on Adam is this the biggest tree you have worked I guess it is, Attila seems to know his stuff as you do a nice pot in a couple of seasons will complete the look. All the best to you both and I assume you can do more together Adam and Attila.

Great job guys! I love anything with a little back story so this was fun for me. Amazing that Atilla’s neighbor immed thought of him when removing from his yard. Just proves that one man’s junk is another’s treasure! 😂 Adam you are very good at interviewing & documenting as you go. Learning so much as a newbie to bonsai. 👍

Again, thanks for you both sharing you working together. Attila, you have a lil more time and experience with Bonsai than Adam, but with him being able to work with other Bonsai Experts, he's on his way to being a great master. Thank you both. I love colabs! And this turned out as a really nice initial prune.

Thank you so much. But i am faaaar away from a "master". Actually i would say i just love trees and grow them. A master starts with Ryan Niel for me at least 😊 But thanks again. Loved every singel minute of working with Adam!

I have ficus tree I’m working. I tried trimming some branches off and bending the branches I wanted to keep. It didn’t work out to well. The branch are fine but tree grew new branches from the base of the ones I bent. The new branch’s are almost just as long now.
@notionbonsai
@notionbonsai Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy! Ohh! If your tree has produced new branches from the base of the ones you bent, you can selectively prune those new shoots to redirect growth energy to the desired branches. Regular maintenance and pruning will help maintain the desired shape and encourage balanced growth. 🤗

Should air layer above the scars.
@attilacsintalan3285
@attilacsintalan3285 Жыл бұрын
Hey. We were considering that, but as i got another 2 trees from that hedge, so we went for 3 different ways, one of them as you suggested is air layered at the middle, one will train as an informal upright , and than we have this tree. Hope we can show all 3 together at one stage ;)
