In this video we will be discussing some of the problems that you may encounter with multi-variety pear trees. When pruning it is important to make sure each variety is equally balanced. This requires heavy pruning of the south and west sides of the tree and light pruning on the north and east sides. This heavy pruning will force the tree to grow an excessive amount of water sprouts which will shade out the fruiting spurs on the interior of the canopy.
Pears like to grow upright so it is important to consider pruning your trees to a central leader. Multi-variety trees take more work and have a small yield. If you want more fruit, plant multiple single variety trees. This tree only produces bartlett pears, the other varieties seldomly produce or produce small amounts.
