Thanks! Great video, lots of pruning. Where Acasias grow the winters are mild but also dry. It is the wet and cold together that they don't like. That Natal ficus root was impressive.

@21:37-22:26 I love the moss on your 'Two Little Leaf Ficus'. It's like green velvet! It looks a very healthy and happy tree.

The little leaf ficus is looking really good, all the leaves are opened up instead of curled up. I am transferring the files for the book as I type!

I started several guavas from seed this past summer and have been so pleased to see your videos on making your Guava tree into a bonsai! Hopefully I can look forward to similar in the years to come

Hi Nigel. That's a lot of dead Acacias. Hope the rest will survive. They do like the heat. Too bad it's cold out there. Maybe New Zealand is a better place to grow them. It always makes me very happy to see them tho. Thanks as always for the updates. You're a legend.
@JackC19613 жыл бұрын
No, we don't want any to die, but non the less an Acacia from seed update 👍. They look great Nigel, I like your considered approach to pruning, I find my self having a chat with the tree also as I prune 🪴. You got to get those forking Guava branches to fork the right way 🧐. Great video, thanks Nigel.

When walking through the African bush, where (formerly) Acacias (now either Senegalias or Vachelias) grow, you will notice that their canopies do not intertwine. Each has its own space. It is more correct to refer to such an area as bushveld rather than a forest, as the canopies do not form a "roof".

I've been waiting for a video on the Acacias 😀 They've thicken up nicely. I would suggest that you plant some of them out in Spring, they don't like to be so tight together. Your basement might be too dark for them? They love light, even when they are dormant in winter they love light (and by winter I mean anything between 12 and 20° C 😅). As for the Burtt-Davyi/Natal Ficus, it could be any of the two, haha. According to a website: "It is distinguished by its faintly 3-veined leaf base from its closest species F. burkei and F. natalensis."

Sorry I couldn't stay up for this one last night Nigel. It was wonderful to meet you cam to cam last night at the society meeting and to compare 3D prints! I'll have to stop by the "Zone" some time when coming south.

Aussie Dave here Nigel, I like your gauva plant, but the trunk needs movement 🤔. A good 5 mm wire or a branch bender will make the gauva more pleasing 🤗. What do you think 🤔
@dabblingwithbonsai3 жыл бұрын
As the trunk thickens I think the lack of movement doesn't bother that much. It's still a young tree after all. And as Nigel is more of a clip-and-grow kind a fellow, I'd personally find it disturbing for him to use wire on the trunk :D

Hey Nigel! Just a thought about the acacia forest. If you will be finding room for it in the plant room midway through the winter, what about the idea of just skipping the basement altogether, and putting it directly into the plant room now? It had such a hard winter last year, and it might help it maintain some vigor to have those warmer temps all winter. I’m bet there is a reason they need that coolness in the basement first, but I thought I would at least mention my thought. Really enjoying your preparations for the winter. I love the idea you had to drill holes in the glass greenhouse tracks to allow condensation to drain out of the window spaces!

You should look into mobile shelving. That’s what I’ve been using since I’ve received so many trees filling my garage.

Hi Nigel, that weed you pulled from the Acacia Forest looked to me a lot like Indigofera himalayensis, they have amazing pink flowers in spring and yes, the leaves move up and down with the sun! Not sure on its Bonsai potential though! Thanks for all the videos too ☺️
