I was stationed at Schofield Barracks for four years. I can remember eating wild avocados during training in the bottom of the gultches...... guava, cherry guava, and avocados...... Best four years of my life.

nice avocado prune video. Thanks!... Should the tree be fertilized after pruning?

One word of caution: lower hanging branches give the trunk shade. Ditto for upper branches. Hawaii may be more benign, but in places like California, sunburn on your green branches and even on your fruit is an issue. Over-pruning can be detrimental. I like the idea of keeping the tree short, though. Some avos just want to reach for the sky, and you'll be pruning a heck of a lot to prevent too much vertical growth.

I am in Cal too. I usually just try to remove or cut back a branch or two in the winter. I agree on the skirt. I used to cut low branches which weren't doing anything but now I leave them to shade the roots.

How do you feel about nursery stakes? Over the past month or so I have gotten about 11 different varieties and planted them in my back. From 5gal to 25gal. One thing I noticed is they are extremely dependent on the stake and I don’t like that. I removed the stakes and gave them a hard prune so they could stand on their own. People have said I should have just left it for 3-5 years until they are so big they no longer need it. For some reason that doesn’t seem like good advice to me. What are your thoughts?

Its not an exacting science and every five growers will have a different way to prune. No right or wrong way, just what works for you.

I prune mine in the winter so they grow back in the spring in time for summer and try to keep as much fruit on as possible.
