You can substitute bread or wraps with the cabbage leaves to make sandwiches... for the low carb folks.

Thanks for the info. I noticed my cabbages getting unruly so I googled ‘pruning cabbages’ and your video appeared. now I know I can remove many of the leaves, even use them for wraps etc and the cabbage keeps growing. A win all round.

Thank you for this!! I have some big beautiful cabbage this year that have hardly been touch by the cabbage moths (I started spraying the moment I planted them 🤣 usually they are swiss cabbage 🙃) and it's wonderful... But they are WILD and its difficult getting in to water and fertilize. Wanted to make sure I could prune them and see how to do it... This is great!

You motivated me to prune my cabbage plants - I actually put the video on pause and did it!...LOL. I'm just starting to grow Cabbage here in Northern CA - SF Bay Area. I started about 2-3 months ago. I planted 6 plants. One in the front yard, and the others in my backyard. The one I planted in my front yard is maturing nicely and believe it will produce soon. Unfortunately, the ones in the backyard are looking puny! They haven't been growing at the rate as the ones in my front yard. I'm thinking the soil in the backyard needs to be roto-tilled so the roots can reach deeper, also, the soil may not be keeping moist enough? I have increased watering the backyard plants to about 4-5 days a week from my initial 2-3 days. I'm noticing more growth from that change. I would appreciate your input. Thanks!!

How much sun do the one in the back get as compared to the ones in the front? Are you providing nutrients to your plants?
@NDemanuele13 жыл бұрын
@@smallblockfuelie Thanks for your response. I believe they get enough sun as the front and do give them a feed specific to vegetable plants - which I rarely give them. I will give them some in the next watering.
@smallblockfuelie3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome. Ideally they should be getting 8 hours of direct light every day. If they’re getting less light than the front it would explain why their growth is behind.

@@smallblockfuelie Thanks! What about Watering?
@smallblockfuelie3 жыл бұрын
Daily. Any time you check with your finger your should be able to detect a little moisture. Plants cool themselves and take in nutrients via water through their roots. If there isn’t water at the roots they can’t get to the available nutrients or cool themselves well.

Thank you so much for this video it truly helped me a lot I’ve never grown cabbage I went out and pruned it how do I store the leaves so that I can use them in the next week or so for smoothies?
@smallblockfuelie2 жыл бұрын
Rinse and pat them dry with a towel and place them in the fridge. They’re great in stir fry, used to make and wrap egg rolls, to make sauerkraut and many other things.

Can I use this same technique with kohlrabi leaves? I have purple kohlrabi this year and the leaves are huge. Wondering if they can be cut back and still survive?

+Carrie Hatzlhoffer folks also use the leaves as a wrap. They’re good in stir fry too, we rip them into pieces after rinsing them in water and drop them into the wok.

Hello Sir. This is my first year trying a garden and I didn’t know it was that much work and stuff you have to do, but I love it. What is the bacteria stuff you mentioned and the food that you use for your. I was pruning the cabbage at first but thought I was doing the wrong thing and stopped and they aren’t going anymore and when I saw this video I realized I was doing right. Can you please give me some tips. I have cabbage, collards, squash, bell peppers, tomatoes and watermelon. Thank you in advance for your kindness

Bacillus Thuringiensis , also known as BT is what we use. It’s good in your garden for any caterpillar.

Thuricide. It’s a naturally occurring bacteria that’s safe for humans and certified organic. www.amazon.com/Southern-Ag-13022-Thuricide-Caterpillar/dp/B004QJ33B4/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=BT&qid=1687691619&sr=8-1

Quick update: After taking a closer look at my puny cabbage in the yard, I discovered they are not getting enough sun, they're basically in the Shade. :-( How easy is it to move them to a sunnier spot? Will they survive being moved, or am I better off getting new plants? Thanks again!
@smallblockfuelie3 жыл бұрын
That would explain their slow growth rate. Yes, they can be transplanted. Prune them and water them well. Use a shovel and take out as much soil and root as possible. Dig a similar sized hole in the new spot and drop the plant and soil into place. Water it well again. Ideally I prefer to do my transplanting in the late afternoon to evening.

@@smallblockfuelie I'll try to do it this afternoon. Thanks!

Fantastic. And you’ll get to eat the leaves during the process. A leaf or two each week, only. You want it to be able to pull in hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. To much leaf removal and you’ll slow down the growth process. Good luck.
