What part of the country are you located in, where you have this fig tree?

It looks like trees need leaves for photosynthesis to create sugars and feed the figs. I am not sure of the science of removing leaves. I have seen others do this too.

@@bosquebear1 Fig trees in the South often lose over 90% of their leaves from fig rust by late summer and the figs still ripen. Some remove all the leaves in late fall to force green figs to ripen before frost. Sun hitting the figs seems to ripen them better.
