I did this to our Tournament of Roses grandiflora today, I hope it bounces back from being uncovered all winter in zone 5b. Saw some buds at the base, glad this plant is smarter than I am.

You can do a summer clean up as per the video summer rose clean up. I always look at pruning as a year around thing and not just something to be done once a year. So yes, go ahead and do a good clean up but as the summer clean up video says make sure your winter is far enough off to give new growth a chance to settle in.

I think last year was a just a period for the rose to get settled in after being transplanted. I would expect more from it this spring now that it is settled in.

Good - that was what I was hoping, and Thanks for the reply! Now, we aren't wanting roses to cut from this - we'd rather have it bloom heavily than get just a few long stemmed ones. Any advice on how to prune it this year to accomplish that?

Sorry to disturb you again but your really a life saver. I've got another question :( . When you dead head or cut off a spray of flowers for the vase from a floribunda or a hybrid tea rose. You cut in down all the way under the truss to a bud eye? Even if the flowers are not all coming out from the top of the main cane but from side bud eyes? I have the coming out from the sides too and the flowers have eyes under them too.

Yes, cut to all the way under the truss.

Below the 18-24 inch cut, as you have mentioned , I noticed that my hybrid tea roses have inner buds or buds growing side ways. Do I clip these buds off for long stem roses?

Awesome videos! I have a 'Mr Lincoln' that I rescued the fall before last from a friend who was not happy with it. It has a nice vase shape now, but it isn't growing a lot of bearing canes. Last summer we got 4 blooms from it, all were the size of grapefruit, and it bloomed at about 5ft. We have been pruning it as you describe, but are sort of puzzled. I should mention that the 5 main canes are thicker than my thumb - these are big thick "limbs". Are we expecting too much from the transplant?

Wanted to ask you some questions about prunning if you dont mind. I still dont understand it :( First when your rose is in its first year it says your just meant to remove the spent blooms... but what if the first bud eye is a inward facing bud not a outward? Second on a rose does the bud eyes have to be exactly an outward facing bud or a outward facing bud eye at the side is still good? Third when a rose bush is over 3 years and gets a new basal cane that year. Do you still prune it down like all the older canes in winter to 12 inches for hybrid tea and floribunda roses? And the last one when hard pruning older roses every winter. Like Hybrid teas... Every year you prune off all the new growth that rose grew that year?

thanks for the video, i had a lilly flower in my front garden that every year added several new stem from its root/ground and now i have 15 of them all growing very close to each other almost their base touching. To get the most flowers should I cut some of the small ones from groung to give space to other lilys or leave them? Thanks

what if you don't want the cut flowers for in the house. What's the r=pruning technique then? Just trim the tops and clear out old canes?
@Paulzimmermanroses

Do that and take it down by about a third.

Regarding cuttings for propagation. Many roses are patented and propagation is therefor illegal. Additionally we encourage gardeners to support Independent Rose Nurseries by purchasing plants from them.

if one is a Gardner that already pretty much has a good idea of how to prune, then this video Is ok. but his closeups are not instructional, so for the interested novice this video has very limited value.
