Can you do one for the macrophylla/lace cap types, as they flower on old wood? I have inherited a very large overgrown one and would like to rejuvenate it, so was going to prune lightly in Feb, but also take out ⅓ of the branches much lower to encourage new growth to flower a year later. Does that sound right?

Yes, that would be OK. Just wait till the new buds develop a bit so you can see the healthy buds and prune accordingly. If Feb is looking frosty simply wait to perhaps late Feb early March depending on your climate.

Hi Rosy, confused, I thought that as hydrangea paniculata flower in the current season's wood they are pruned late winter, not in Autumn?

It is easier to prune in mid to late Autumn as this protects the plant from rocking in the wind. You get a better shape and they will not grow any more in the Autumn
