Good old reliable hydrangeas. Here we are 4b and blue hydrangeas are not for our climates. Harsh winters make them a really big challenge. If not impossible. But for others they produce flowers year after year and with almost no maintenance. And these flowers last for months, from endjuly until frosts even later. When they are covered by snow. The flowers turn gradually from creamy white to a beautiful pink. I love hydrangeas because they are essentially the only shrub that blooms in late summer.

I hard pruned one that was short of water and light which didn't flower last year. This year, only tiny flower heads. I'm going to give it a feed and water and see how it goes. Not sure if it could be moved? Another lace cap has had autumnal coloured leaves all Summer which looks nice but unusual.

Just cut the old dead wood down to the first bud. That's it! The 'Annabelle' is similar to Crape Myrtle in that you take it down to the bottom - again cutting the dead wood.

Hi! I loved this, very informative. However, there was no mention of the oak leaf hydrangea, which I planted this spring. I got lovely blooms but they went to bronze within a month. The leaves are dying back now as it’s end of October, though that die back started in September. I think this plant goes dormant in winter, though our CA winter is mild. Would appreciate your insights!
