I have a large maple in my garden. I wish i had realised how it would grow. I'm now having to do some drastic work to get it looking better. But we live and learn. Thank you Peter this video is very helpful

I love the last comment of Jo, which helps to understand much: "A bird should be able to fly through (...)" Lovely Peter! Thank you

That was quite a lot of growth for one year! The tree looks gorgeous now. Great eye and hand coordination. Chihuly creates works of art in the same manner. Love. 😊

Just as you are sculpting the layers of a bonsai, is similar to how I prune large fruit trees, we have to let in light and air circulation to help the healthy bud growth, and less disease prone, as well as light in to the tree to open flowers for bee pollination, your also letting in light for the lower crops and bushes, what looks just as the ascetic bonsai forming of a tree is also the art of growing good fruit, many make the mistake of waiting years to prune trees, and then we try to get 3 years of pruning done in one heavy pruning, and the tree jolts in to extremely vigerious branch growth, but it is going to happen anyways, but to prune 2 or more times a year is what I try to say is good and normal practice, but one can not just see it as heavy work, yet the joy of working with the trees like a art that pays off later either as ones exercise and meditation, or such abundance of fruit, especially if one is even growing organic, keeping the tree from over toping in too much top growth prevents the tree from pulling too much nutrients from the roots, especially in a hot summer by too much photo transpiration, we need the roots and trunk to be well developed and strong first, one can even loose a tree and its crop if there is too large a proportion of top growth, to the a small proportion of root system. all the branches pruned, can either be mulched to chips, that help soils retain water in summer, or also turned to bio-char. there is no maintenance free domesticated tree, just a tree that can become a liability.

Excellent description of how to care for your garden trees.

You’ve done it again. This time on trees that are full grown in a garden setting. I noted a general, “less is more”, thought pattern in reshaping the trees into things of beauty. Kudos my friend.

_THANK YOU 🙏 😔 🙏_ Dr. Chan, a great video on pruning a "big" tree. It is was interesting to see a person actually _in_ the tree and another on the ground directing. It is so difficult to trim, in the tree, then step back, then climb again. The trees are beautiful. The amount of growth in one year is amazing, but maples are very big trees. If a year's pruning is missed, the tree can be out of control. Very good job. 🙏 🖖 🙏 😔 🙏

Living in the mid Atlantic US.. Is it better to trim my Japanese Maple in the winter when it’s lost its leaves? Ive been growing it from a seedling for 5 years, and it’s about 3 feet high now. I plan on putting it in a grow box in the spring, and hopefully will have a beautiful Bonsai. I’m I correct? Thank you Mr Chan

Best time to prune is when the Maples are in full growth as any cuts will heal over quickly. Never prune in Winter. Early Spring also OK but I prefer to prune in Summer.

Why is England so noisy...that awful din in the background at the beginning. ?? And Peter..pls stop calling women ladies. It's so demeaning, but you do persist. It would have been interesting too..to know the name of the original designer. Other than that...good result from the pruning.
