Great work on the Cherry Trees. I watched in horror as you cut off the wrong branch!😂. But, good save! Also, thanks for the update. The trunk split, bent tree looks super healthy. Cheers Tony

As soon as I saw your cutter next to the 'right' branch I thought 'oh no!' but luckily it all turned out well 😅 I'm happy that the 3 smaller trees all survived and are even thriving and even the 'split up' Hawthorn is in excellent shape.

As soon as you put the cutters near that branch, I thought what are you doing Tony.

Misery loves company 😂. How many times have I inadvertently removed a branch I meant to keep.. I’ve learned, over time, that in bonsai many mistakes can have happy endings. Thanks, keep growing
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I genuinely believe this mistake worked out really well for the long term development of this tree Matt. Given a few years in the ground, my cherries should give me some really nice material to work with I hope

I like when you said about Bonsai shame. We have Similar plants in South Florida that you stumble over while you're walking in the woods: Sheffelara, Surinam Cherry, Mayan spinach, and of course all the varieties of Strangler figs.

I was shouting out when you went for that wrong cut! I have done it so many times but we know that new options often open up. I definitely agree with you about Ash. I have some lovely ones developing and the only thing I do is reduce the compound leaf in half nearer the top. Lovely range of trees Tony :)

Thanks for that tip mate.Filimng definitely makes pruning extra challenging because we are often working on the opposite side, but I think I dropped in lucky here and this tree should develop into a nice piece of material

What a beautiful trunk on that bird cherry.

Nice set of updates Tony. The wrong branch on the cherry looks fine and I think that most of us have done something similar after spinning a tree around. 👍👍

Cracks me up too. This fast became my favorite bonsai video when I heard Tony lament: "Oh nooo! What an idiot. I've cut the branch off that I wanted." And I thought: "You mean, I'm not the only one?!" All of a sudden, I didn't feel so alone in the world. 😂😊 In this age of staged 'reality' TV, it's rare to see real reality, to see a 'mistake' happen in real time - to watch real life as it happens! Thank you, Tony. You are the everyman of bonsai!

My upddate, acorns in garden came to nowt had 7 in damp kitchen roll in plastic bag, changed roll when it got mouldy and..... 4 have germinated. Lost my lemon of two yrs over winter and my katsura maple got killed in that last one night frost of -4. But I had taken a couple of cuttings and one made it! Finally tackled my last two boulevard, found 3 weevils in one but there were none in the others. Goat willows not liking the sun ATM, may have lost my Hazel due to it. Hawthorns are being treated for rust. Keep growing.xx

Yeah most of my trees seem to be doing well apart from a couple of species that I always struggle with

You actually went with the branch i would have chosen for a new leader at a glance, so i am pleased. Just when i thought i had enough maples, that feild maple is real pretty.
@joegarland4885 Жыл бұрын
Hi Tony ha ha I had a feeling you were going to do that, happy accident mate, the cherry should make a great tree, I like ash as well mate, I think I told you we have a full grown field maple in the front garden so I loads of seedlings now, thinking I might do an air layer on one of the lower branches, it would be my first never done one in all the time I have been doing bonsai, all the best with them all.
@rtregear Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony. For the second cherry (bird cherry?) might you have considered leaving a longer 'stub' on the chopped trunk that could be jined/carved later, perhaps even taking that down a little into the main trunk passed the new leader (without removing too much of the lovely bark)? I don't know about cherry trees, so perhaps it's not appropriate for them? BTW I spilt my coffee when you made that cut on the first tree - luckily, I missed the keyboard! 😳

With the first tree I initially agreed with you about which branch to keep. But after you turned it around I thought maybe that other branch could be even better, if you kept this as the front. Then you proceeded to cut the first branch and I thought, oh I mixed up the branches and the branch just looked good from all angels. But no, it was you who mixed up the branches. None the less I don't think it was a bad choise from the forces of the univesre. From that other angle, that other branch looked maybe even better as I said. Would be awesome to be able to split the timeline and see the developement of both possible desicions on a bonsai. Anyways I'm sure this one was alwaysbgoing to turn out good with either of those branches!
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
I like your thinking. Somewhere in another universe, there will be the same tree withe other branch removed. If you manage to find a way to warp space time, let me know how it looks 🤣

I bought a cool tree from our native Nursery, it was labeled a cherry but it doesn't look like any other cherry i've seen. If I was a little smarter I might say it was mislabeled but I can't say that because I don't know

Ash aint that bad if you take advantage of the pinnate leaves and regard them as having smaller individual leaves which they kind of do. I not sure if that sentence make sense but think you got it?
