Agreed. I've heard of pinching out in spring but seems barbaric and a huge waste of the trees energy as it doesn't contribute to aging and thickening the tree. This does seem better. I don't seem to have a problem with vigorous growth on my maples though due to their age and confinement.

Regarding that one "big" chop on the red maple forest. I was wondering if you could've simply rotated the tree at the next replanting so that the branches wouldn't cross anymore. That way you wouldn't have to lose that ramification. But maybe it's not possible to seperate the trees since the roots are too intertwined?

Honestly bonsai, despite its age as an artform is WAYYY behinde modern forms of equatible art. For example for hundreds of yesrs paintings where just better and better attempts at creating an image the artist saw themselves, a scene, a portrate, ect. Then modern art turned into well, pollack, dali, warhol, ect. Music was just theory until jazz and blues. Bonsai is very formal, "replicate old looking tree of x species and deviation from that plan is heresy" however personally i really enjoy middle aged trees, young trees, all differnt types of tree. Bonsai shouldnt JUST be ancient fat short trees that are one of five japanese species. I think renato hoenig is a perfect example of the future of bonsai rip. The australian species are amazing, there is a lot of crazy new ideas there.
