Growing out bonsai trunks in the ground requires regular maintenance. Create a better Nebari when field growing bonsai trunks. Work the bonsai roots pruning them back which creates taper and ramification in the roots. Then prune back sacrifice branches to avoid big cut marks on bonsai and induce taper and movement in the branches.
After pruning roots and branches it is time to plant the tree back in the ground. Let the tree grow and in 2-4 years it is time to do this all over again.

So all that can be done in the winter, good to know, gives me a lot to do this winter (just started with bonsai, so all the knowledge I suck up, I am a sucker but don't cut me off)

12:57 or the horse doing unauthorised pruning! My maples and zelcova are a lot shorter than I had intended them to be at midsummer, but at least the horse is happy!!

I had to build a cage for my bench to keep the packrats from killing my trees. I am contemplating putting this cage over my raised bed for trees in the ground, which will deter deer also (and my roommate's horses).

@@christymartin6281 Here the rabbits will eat everything above the snow and the mice, voles and moles eat everything under the snow. Need a fine wire mesh that has also a mesh floor. Sneaky buggers... Deer and moose here too, but the horses are way down the road, I wish they were in my yard LOL

Great demonstration - enjoy the tips, your pruning strategies, and seeing the structure development. Do you prune your ground-planted trees yearly - or just when you lift to work on the roots?

It depends on the growth they put on, the size of wounds I find acceptable and the time I take. I do look at them at least twice a year for pruning needs.

I have been thinking about this video for 2 weeks now and I want to start my own garden like yours. Thanks for the inspiration. I have an idea that is either brilliant or ridiculous so I thought that I would ask you for your opinion. I know that you use a slab of thin rock to keep the roots growing outwards and not downwards but what if it was a piece of window screen mesh? The downside is that roots would try to grow through it and self-girdle in the mesh and it might be difficult to remove afterwards. But this is exactly why I think that it would be beneficial because it will stop the downward roots from thickening and act as an air-pruning device creating more thinner roots. Am I crazy?

I look for trees that have or will have in a reasonable trunk soon. You can strip years off the completion of a tree if you look for the right tree. At 62 I don’t look for long term projects. I like to see my trees and bushes come yo fruition.

Each to their own way. I also enjoy the process. Next to younger material I have a fair number of more mature trees. But I think even at 75 I would still be taking cuttings.
