How do you cut a 3rd year vine? When cutting the 3rd year vine for Cazenave or Spurred cordon, are chosen the highest shoots formed after the 2nd year cutting at the wire level. From the 2 chosen shoots the cords are formed. The rest of the shoots are removed.
If the chosen shoots are not strong enough, cut them into 2-3 eye spurs, and in the next year the 2 cords will be formed. A shoot is thick enough if it is at least 7 mm. Usually a shoot should be as thick as a pencil.
The length of the cords must be equal to half the distance between the vines on the row. It is recommended that the distance between vines in a row be 1.2 m. So it turns out that a cord should be 60 cm long. It is shortened in front of a bud with a top position. All buds with a bottom position are removed. The new shoots formed after entering the vegetation must start only from the upper part of the cordon.
If the vines are planted at a shorter distance then one can go on creating single cords instead of bilateral cords.
This video is part of a series about cutting vine formation. It can be considered a mini guide for beginners.
