I've heard that walnut trees must not be cut or pruned, is it true?
@vladislavsavchenkov96492 жыл бұрын
Do you need to seal it? Also, why 2nd and 3rd tree had their top cut before?
@barnarabai17778 ай бұрын
There is a video of the planting year process, they plant the trees, then cut them at 60-90cm height to promote root development, and ensure the "overgrown" top section does not consume too much energy vs the undeveloped root system (right after planting). This way the roots can develop with the tree. I assume if they planted from seed they may not need such aggressive cutting as the root system could be developed enough to support the tree in situe. They do recommend cutting to a single limb (at 60-90cm height) after the planting in most places though.

Doesn't green leaves provide young trees with energy helping photosynthesis? Maybe we should leave some more branches and make the final pruning during the dormant period? What do you think?
@WaltreeNursery4 жыл бұрын
Hi Zurab. You're right, the the branches create energy for the tree through the green leaves on them. However, the same branches also drain the energy of the tree to grow themselves. Therefore at the time being, they do more harm than good. In the first year, our goal is to grow a strong leader and we don't want to feed energy to the other branches. Hence, we make a small compromise here.
@tonigeorgiev20064 жыл бұрын
I agree if you have some opportunities! I will be very glad.

@@WaltreeNursery why do you graft your walnuts threes?
@stelviodelbrava62183 жыл бұрын
@@seccionaurea5272 Hi. They graft walnut trees because this way young trees start producing earlier in their lives. Otherwise you'd normally have to wait about 5-7 years to see some good yield. Another reason is the variety of walnuts. If they want a specific and better nut variety grown on a specific better rooting variety, they graft one onto the other and obtain a stronger plant that gives bigger and steadier crops. Some varieties give strong root systems and provide excellent nourishment to the weaker (but better nut producing) variety grafted on them. Cheers!

Is there a particular reason you prune the trees during active vegetation and not before they awake ?
@WaltreeNursery4 жыл бұрын
The lower branches drain the energy of the tree as they grow. Therefore at the time being, they do more harm than good for the tree. In the first year, our goal is to grow a strong leader and we don't want to feed energy to the other branches. Hence, we make a small compromise here. In the latter years, this is not the case. Then, just like you said, it would be better to prune the tree during late winter when the tree is dormant.
@zhelyazkoge4 жыл бұрын
@@WaltreeNursery That makes sense. I have 7 ha of walnuts myself and what I was doing with the lower branches is to just snap the tips of and this is just keeping them from growing further. You have a very good orchard there. Great work!
