Broken thermistor, bad bearing, and random rattle are not “minor” for a newbie (which is likely the target demographic) and represent some quality control problems. Could be a one off problem or something more systemic. Nevertheless good review Joel.

I have been running my mini almost continuously for 6 months now. The extruder makes a funny noise when it retracts and sometimes I hear a rattle, but it prints fine so I don't care. Compared to the constant TLC my first printer needed when I was a newbie a few years ago, this thing is a dream. It just prints well all of the time.

@@GdalyaRoth my first 'real' printer was a Prusa MK2 and it still works very well (though is showing its age). After purchasing a CR10, I do know what it is like to have a less feature-rich printer that needs more attention. I always recommend Prusa over anything else I've used.

The Prusa Mini also has issues with jamming and clogging as well as with the Minda probe. Before you buy, I recommend reading their forums. I owned mine for about five weeks, during which time I only printed Prusament PLA using default settings. I had to (at the direction of Prusa support) completely take apart the extruder four times and the hot end twice, eventually replacing the entire hot end with a new one they sent me. Over the course of five weeks, the printer spent about half that time down for parts and repairs. Prusa support was excellent throughout, but at the end they agreed my unit needed to come back (at my shipping expense). Overall, it was a big disappointment. If you had a different experience, I’m happy for you. Mine wasn’t great.

I almost bought one of these until I found out that it does not have an all metal hot end and no one can give me a solid answer if you can upgrade the printer to have one. I understand that Prusa may be trying to keep this printer from being copied, but it already has been copied and the clone is half the price.

I purchased my I3 Mark III as a kit; I had some problems with it, mostly due to errors in assembly. Eventually, after about three months, I returned it to Prusa and exchanged it for a pre-assembled model. I've had occasional issues with it over the last year, most notably a broken thermistor wire, which was an easy fix. I also had to replace my hotend, as mine had gotten fully jammed with PETG (that one was ALSO my fault). I've probably spent around $300 over the course of the year, but my printer is working like a champ. The print quality is still very, very high, and the reliability is awesome. All I really have to due is to insure there's enough glue stick applied to the PEI sheet, and my first layer goes down great; once I have a good first layer, the rest is easy. I could probably tweak the settings better - I do get some stringing now and then - but overall, I'm really happy with this machine - which is now a Mark 3S (the upgrade ended up being free - thanks, Josef). If the Mini is even half as good as the full-size, then I'd say it's an excellent buy. Before buying, I watched Maker's Muse, Tom Sandlanderer -- and of course, Joel; however, it was really Joel's review of the I3MkIII that put me over the top and helped me pick this printer over others I was looking at. I've been a fan of his ever since. TLDR; Please consider donating some money to the Seattle Children's Hospital. It's a really worthy cause, and we all need to help somehow.

To everyone who's USB drive isn't recognized by the printer: You can try changing the partition table of the USB stick from GPT to MBR, as some printers don't like GPT. How you can do that? Open command prompt as administrator and enter "diskpart" > "list disk" > "select disk X" > "clean" > "convert MBR" > "create partition PRIMARY" > "select partition 1" > "format fs=fat32 quick". Just make sure you select the right disk, cause this is gonna wipe it. When done, the printer should have no problem recognizing the USB stick.

Every time there are some "layer inconsistencies" or imperfections of some sort Joel (and others) blame it on "the filament is not calibrated" or "settings not tweaked". Why is that? If there would be one instance where calibrating would be worth the time it would be a 3d printer review? I don't think this is fair

Yeah the 'filament not calibrated' doesn't make sense to me, sounds like Joel's printer suffers from the same over/under-extrusion issues that some other reviewers had, because the filament almost jams, causing underextrusion, then the jam starts moving and causes overextrusion.

We got ours last week for printing work test pieces it's been printing constantly over the weekend getting to understand it's limits. Really happy with the print quality in the past I've sent prototypes out and have had them made in SLS and SLA and honestly would be happy showing them to customers. I did have an issue yesterday when the extruder started clicking which I was disappointed about but the documentation on the website had me back up and running within an hour and I think I could sort the same issue out in 10 minutes now. One of the key reasons I went for it was the price point, the reputation of Prusa, but also being designed and engineered in Europe it has to meet certain safety standards which for me was a big selling point.

I have had my Mini for about 3 months now and I can only partially agree. While it works absolutely fine (despite a lot of stringing) with Prusament, it was a complete nightmare with cheaper filaments. Naive young me thought it would be a good idea to purchase a plain white RYKE PLA spool from Amazon for prototyping. Oh boy. That was a mistake. I easily spent 10 hours of my freetime trying to get this stuff to even extrude properly. The nozzle constantly clogged and the extruder jammed regularly with this material. However, after hours of trial and error, cold pulls and extruder cleaning and idler tension adjustments I found a solution that worked somehow. I used a 0.6mm nozzle and printed at 230°C, which was the only way to get a proper extrusion. However, even with that milestone, I had some molten filament drip out of the hotend, like ABOVE the heaterblock, where the hotend is screwed into the heater block. This requires regular removal of molten PLA in hourly intervals during printing. Not cool! I tried to print that crappy filament away as fast as possible before something else went wrong and I was so happy when I could finally return to Prusament. Tldr: if you consider buying a Prusa Mini, do yourself a favour and stick to Prusament only. There are a lot of reports of people complaining that other filament brands just don't work on this machine. I learned it the hard way.

Hi Joel, thanks for the reviews and info, keep it up. This year I tried to become a Prusa boy too but failed. I bought a Mini with high hopes but sadly a major design flaw sent my mini back home and my Prusa boy membership was no more. Anyway enough of the banter. The MINDA type level probe is a huge problem in environments where the temperature is not constant. The trigger level varies with temperature. My print farm lives in out buildings which are not heated at night so the printers start cold in the morning and warm up through the day. The Prusa mini will not consistently level in this situation. The results are high first layers, nozzle dragging across the expensive print bed and prints stuck so tight to the bed that the bed is delaminated when removing. I don't have 30 minutes to set up the printer level for every print and there is no manual bed level option so the Prusa mini was totally unsuitable for me. Prusa appear to have attempted to cover up this issue by setting the minimum start temperature to 15C. This also renders the mini unusable for me for about 5 months a year. Buyer beware. The mini is great for indoor heated rooms but is unsuitable for colder print farm rooms.

@overflow7276 3 жыл бұрын
I second that! I had to improvise a construct with an enclosure, blankets ontop and hot waterbottles inside to get my Mini working in 12°C surroundings (my garage). This is just dumb. I have to leat it warm up at least one hour before I can even think of trying a first layer calibration. Prusa should have mentioned this when advertising this product. INDOORS ONLY!

I've loved my mini so far. But out of the box it was very picky about filaments, with some heat creep issues. Strongly recommend the 3d party heat break upgrade. It fixes all the layer inconsistencies and works through any filament brand now. Also, the included USB flash stick developed bad sectors after a while that caused prints to fail/halt. Seems like I'm not the only one that had to throw away that stick.

I think the prusa mini is a perfect beginner 3D-Printer. I got mine in July. It's so easy and self-explaning. Easy building, Plug it in, Load filament, Plug usb-stick in, Print one of the example-models or slice something with the standard settings in prusa slicer. I think it works like a charm. I had NO problem until now. One thing I really don't like is the single Z-Axis, but the printer is stable enough.

This! The minda is shit. I had to place my Mini in my garage where it has roughly 12°C during winter. If I don't give my Mini at least 1 hour of warmup-time inside its LACK enclosure the first layer calibration will be different between each and every print. So annoying! If you also intend to operate your Mini in cold surroundings, you will soon recognize that it refuses to even heat up when the measured temperature is below 15°C. My fix to that problem was placing a waterbottle with hot water ontop of the bed and moving the hotend close to it. After the bed has reached ~17°C you can heat up your enclosure with the bed itself. Protip: to keep the temperature constant over time cover your enclosure with blankets and place at least two other hot water bottles next to your printer. They work essentially like heat-batteries and can keep the air in the enclosure warm for about 8 hours straight! (With constant heatbed output that is!)

Reason I am posting this is my recent neighborhood challenge, my machine vs. the original PRUSA. You might find this interesting. Just 4 months ago I entered the 3D printing world. Now, what machines did I start with? I was checking out snapmaker, as I thought how cool it would be to have 3D printing, laser and CNC in one unit. I then found Dobot MOOZ. For about 3 weeks I suffered with printhead jams and bed adhesion issues. Then I actually learned how to load filament correctly, surely different machine to machine. I now straighten 5 inches of filament, and I mean nail I preheat the nozzle to 200c and I gently feed it though the filament sensor that detects filament run out, then through the feeder gears. If filament is not nail straight it can, and has, run amok and tangled in the gears, now I have achieved perfection. Next the adhesion issues. Watching videos I tried painters tape, hairspray, glue stick, and FINALLY the solution that works like gold for me. The cheapest Elmers school glue. The one we remember as kids, the white, soap and water clean up. Ironically it seems stickier when still the cloudy white BUT wait till it fully dries to clear and, perfect stick. AND, as a bonus, just put a couple dabs of water on the dried glue, and the glue will remain on the build plate if you allow the bed to cool after printing. A couple dabs of water to make it that creamy white, let it dry to clear again and its reusable for about 5 or 6 times on the same Elmers glue bed covering. MANY MANY complaints on this Dobot MOOZ but this is funny. My neighbor has a PRUSA, the original. I actually get better prints than he does which stunned him. I did hook up with a second printer for a larger print volume, Sindoh DP200. BUT the MOOZ prints are significantly sharper but the Sindoh helps me with larger print size requirements.

Two prusa mini's in our school's lab and they had severe jamming. Tried lots of hot/cold pulls, disassembling and reassembling, and reseating the ptfe tube in the extruder. If the tube is deformed or a particle gets stuck in the nozzle, the parts have to be replaced or at the very least for the ptfe tube flipped 180. Did not realize it was a single drive extruder until opening it up. They are functional, just need something a little more than a beginner's knowledge to keep them running which isn't too unique for the $450 price

The clicking you’re hearing is the extruder. There’s another video out there about this and he actually fixes the issue. I recently fixed mine but not well enough because the issue came back just a few days later. I had to: do a cold pull, unload the filament, completely take apart the extruder to access the large extruder gear inside and clean off inside the teeth on the filament gear with a steel brush. Then I removed the Boden tube that connects to the hot end and hand to loosen the 3 grub screws to be able to move the heatbreak around. I added thermal paste to the outside of the heatbreak and put it back in the hot end all the way up. The issue with this printer is that a small gap forms between the boden tube and the heat break. Bondtech actually has 2 products to fix this issue.

I had the same thing. But I solve it with thingtening the ptfe tube à little more than noticed. I screw the joining part, then unscrew it an half turn. (maybe 3/4) Push the heatbreak to the top and lock it with 3 little screws. Then screw the joining part to the max. With this method I solve the underextruction du to the gap. I had to clean the heatbreak perfectly to remove all the melted pla. (done it without the bowden and the joining part, with a wooden stick hotend at 250°C)

Only 8 weeks now lol when I ordered in Feb 2020 it took until July to arrive ! Have just fitted the Bondtech extruder upgrade and about to fit the Bondtech heat break component which hopefully will resolve the inherent design issues of the 'standard' Prusa product. It galls that one has to pay extra for those Bondtech upgrades and replacement bowden tubes (like overall about $100) despite acknowledged design faults. It is a great printer but the clogs once they begin never go away and hopefully they will be gone with the heat break and extruder. So, be prepared to add another $100 and wasted time and effort fixing the printer. That said, when the printer is at its best, then it is superb.

I also have the rattling and cooling fan spin-up noise problem, but on the MK3-S. What solved the fan problem for me was loosening the fan screws by half a turn so that the fan housing does not warp. After all, the fan hardly weighs anything (and the fan housing isn't very strong). I don't know if that works for the mini fan though. For the rattling I have to investigate further, but it might be a belt grinding somewhere. Thx for your awesome videos! Sorry for all the "fans" in my post, but I'm a big fan :-)

I got this 3d printer a couple weeks ago, and I love it so much! It works so well, prints so smooth, and is super easy to use. But one interesting I noticed is that the red pla 1.75 Hatchbox filament printed better than the Royal Blue prusament. Does anybody know if there is a way I could get better prints with this filament? But overall it’s a great printer for the price.

Awesome Joel, Thank you for the review of our greenTEC Pro. The Mini is a great printer! Best is to print GreenTEC pro with 220c and 230 max. Cooling on max. This should prevent the stringing issues. You know who to contact in case you have any issues ;)

My solutions to your mini problems: I find that with a little bit of stringing it can get caught in the fan and make strange noises, I had rattling but it was just the filament sensor tapping against the spool And if you make folders on the USB key it won’t read it which is annoying because you can’t organize it but just buy small cheap flash drives and label them or have two and alternate

I can't justify the price when you can get an ender 5 for around the same price and the pro version for just a little bit more, both of which have a larger build volume. The ender 5/5 pro are (in my opinion) more sturdier (giving less shaking and vibrations). I have an Ender 5 pro and absolutely love it except for the magnetic build plate that came with it as the plate under the magnet was 2mm higher (massive concaved surface) in the corners than the center (easily fixed with a glass build plate). Love your channel though mate, it's the go to channel for 3d printing in my home.

There is a known issue with bad USB sticks sent from Prusa. I got my Mini about 3 weeks ago, mixed results so far, but the only machine failures I've had were related to that USB. Had 3 failures with watchdog error resets because the USB stick they sent preloaded with files is physically bad in some way. everything i have sent through octoprint has worked great, everything printed with prusament looks great. now I just have to tune for stringing on this MatterHachers Build PLA.

So... Lets see if I have this summarized correctly...Issue 1 - remove ring from memory stick. It will resolve an irritating vibration... Issue 2 - During first assembly, lubricate all the linear bearings. Will likely resolve some premature bearing failures... Issue 3 - Consider replacing the extruder, or more likely replace it if you get print failures or jams... (I'm going to replace it with a Mosquito, I think. It's lighter and should put less strain on the arm.) Issue 4 - Thermistor wires getting broken. These wires are really thin. Investigation needs done involving the "human factors" related to the thermistor. The only way I can think of where people do anything near the thermistor is when they change or clean a nozzle. If anyone uses wrenches or pliers, they need to be really careful with the wires. I think those were the issues mentioned here... Oh and Joel is not paid to do these reviews... ;-)

Nice review. Also enjoyed the live stream with your daughter. I've been running my mini sort of in production based type scenario. I really, really love that after the part is done, I just remove the stuff from the build sheet, and "reprint" click to start again. It's been consistent. Couldn't say the same for my Ender 3, unfortunately. I tried, I really did. I hope I can sell the goods im making, and buy a 2nd Mini

Hmm why does Prusa get a pass at glaring QC issues? I find it very odd that if an Ender had those problems it would be blasted at half the price. I just got into 3d printing but my custom Ender 3 Pro is better than this thing and was cheaper.

Hi Joel, I've been using the Prusa Mini for quite some time now and I absolutely love it! I had some technical problems in the beginning. There was a problem with the extruder but thanks to the awesome helpdesk I was able to fix that. Also my usb drive had a problem and it took me quite some time to figure out that was why the printer wasn't printing properly (it wouldn't let me change the settings during print anymore). This being my first 3d printer it was a bit of a learning curve but now I feel I really understand the machine. Great stuff!

I had the same problem with the USB stick. Only mine wouldn't read from the start. I just grabbed another one from the drawer, not a big deal, but I could see it being a huge deal for a noob that might not have USB sticks laying around or the troubleshooing skills to realize its just the drive and not the machine. Overall it's a great little machine though.

My only issue is the cantilever design. My 1st printer was a Monoprice Select Mini v2. It had a robust design, sheet metal instead of plastic and rails. Less than a year and I was getting sag on the arm. The small build plate is going to hinder people as well. I remember wanting to print this and that and several other things all of which I had ti resize to fit the small build volume. I went from my Monoprice to a CR-10s which while not perfect gave me the room to work with. The print quality of this Prusa is impressive. Not really sold on the price.

i love prusa more than most, i have 3 mk3 with mmu2. but it seems to me that you are giving prusa a pass on some things that we should not!, if this was a no name brand I cant help but feel you would be pushing the issue more, for the price there is a lot of options out there that you get a lot more if your willing to put up with some stuff. prusa is a top shelf price and the printer should match, don't get me wrong I'm sure that prusa treats there employs better than any one of the china printer company's does!. thanks for all you do Joel! I ran into an annoying speed bump during calibration, but on 5th runthrough I was able to get it going. Best sub-$400 printer I've used, but then, I haven't touched a Creality machine. ;P Now I need to print that handle. Hopefully DesignSpark is a decent parametric CAD package, I have a few ideas I want to print up. Re: Stealing the bed thermistor from the MK2 Be very gentle with them wires, as they're thin and prone to breakage from just handling them, though they're not nearly as bad as the wires inside smartphones. Use alcohol to loosen up the adhesive if it won't come off willingly. You'll also need fresh metal (ideally copper, but aluminum should work) tape and Kapton tape.
