Ponniyin Selvan is actually Raja Raja Cholan. His son Rajendra Cholan extended the empire by going east - Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia. They are still digging up archaeological treasures in Malaysia and Indonesia. I was fortunate enough to visit Bujang valley in Kedah Malaysia where Rajendra Cholan first landed

The Chola Dynasty reached its peak under Rajaraja Chola I (r. 985 - 1014 AD) and his son, Rajendra Chola (r. 1014 - 1044 AD). The Cholas invaded Sri Lanka under these two kings, spread their territories to the north as far as the Ganges River, and also brought maritime South East India (thailand,indonesia,korean penninsula etc...)under their sphere of influence.

This novel actually dates back to 950 to 1013 approx . There is no actual caste system existed. But historians say, it might have originated from this time. Because, chola king thought to give works for each groups. He thought it would be efficient for governance. Unfortunately, it didn't go well as he wished. By times, after many invasions that idea of "work for each group " Is drastically changed to low and high class works. People forgotten the reason of bringing this, and they started fighting for their caste, their pride and stuff. Now about this novel : This is not a true story. It's a fictional story but made of real characters. The main idea what they conveyed is true. But how they conveyed is not true. This movie actually taken from novel called ponniyin selvan. Kalki is the author. He researched about chola dynasty very much. He even travelled to sri Lanka twice to complete this novel. Many characters of this novel is taken from scriptures, writings in chola temples. Only some characters are Fiction. They did this to spice up the story. It's a 6 month story. There is no strict one line. It doesn't speak about war. I'll say it's about a race for throne. No big wars was spoken in this novel. It's fully based on happening and incidents. This is the most selled tamil novel for several decades. And I'm so excited for the movie!

Yes, cholas were shaivaites (people who worship Shiva). Though all kinds of beliefs even from accross oceans were present in chola kingdom like budhism, jainism, Christianity, Islam, it was all there and the natives converted to different belief systems as well, that's why you can see the earliest Jewish community in India, Jews have 2000 year old history here, Christianity was in India before most of Europe got introduced to it, so was Islam. Also, 300 BCE was just the last record of them, we have literature stating even before that. There are no historical records before that but we are finding more and getting there.

Ours is not a religion it's a way of life. So hinduism is not the exact word. But we are hindus. And swami vivekananda said say hindu with pride. Is lord shiva from christianity. He is the one of the tirumoorthi. So how he is not in hinduism. Also you say they worshipped shiva only. Then how is the vishnu temple present in cambodia ankhor wat. It's built by cholas.
