Vikram plays the role of king Adhitha karikalan, karthi plays a fictional role the author of the novel came up with, the story revolves around one of our protagonist who travels through the chola kingdom ,who was tasked by Adhitha karikalan and finds out there's more happening in the kingdom that it seems. This was based on the murder of Adhitha karikalan the king when he was about to rise to power,an actual historical even. Thought we now know who are the conspired murders of the king from stone scriptures, the author of the novel didn't know that at the time. Also Jayam Ravi plays the role of Arunmozhi Varman, titled as king Raja Raja chola Who at the time he lived which is around 10th century, that's when they rose to even higher power then followed by his son Rajendra chola who rose the chola dynasty to even higher than his father. For the next 300 years they were to dominate the whole terrain of South India, also orisa and parts of North India,and also southeast Asia. Cholas existed far back thousands of years ago, but this was the golden age for them and the whole of Tamils.

@@sunilpia arunmozhivarman (potrayed by jayamravi) is the main protagonist of the movie..which is named after the characters nick name PONNIYIN SELVAN *meaning*=son of ponni Ponni is the river kaveri in india which is considered holy by people at that period..the king arunmozhivarman was said to be saved by river ponni in a dangerous situation thus got the name SON OF PONNI!

Vanthiyathevan Vallavarayan is not an entirely fictional character. His wife wrote down her husband's name on her inscriptions. The version that we will be seeing is a fictionalised one, but there existed a real Vanthiyathevan, and he indeed ended up marrying the same person as in the novel.

Context : there are no group of warriors, the novel (assuming the film as well) starts with Vikram sending his friend (Karthi) as a messenger to his younger sister. The song is Karthi singing to his horse along the journey, as he passes through the Aadi (July) Festival. Don't worry Pia, the horse doesn't die.

The whole story of Ponniyin selvan revolves around Vanthiyathevan ( Karthi) and his journey throughout the chola kingdom...!!!! And I hope this is the intro song maybe..coz the novel begins at this point where he starts the journey along the riverside of cauvery with his dreams of visiting the chola kingdom...!!!

I know this is disgraceful 😅🙏But being Tamil, I haven't read Ponniyin Selvan and neither can read Tamil script albeit having spoken only Tamil since birth and having watched , practiced and been extremely rooted in our culture and traditions... having grown up in the north. I thank you for summarizing the story .... although it was bit of a spoiler 😂 Wantonly I was not yielding to the pressure of reading the book because wanted to get blown away by the story. With Kalki Sir's writing it sure is supposed to be a hit. Each time I heard of this epic, I hear different things. From some sources : it appears to be an expedition (Kingdom capturing by Adithya Karikalan) , from some : regarding ascent of Shri Arulmozhivarman to the throne of the Chola Empire as Raja Raja Chozha 🙏🕉🛕🐚🌿 while some others also call it a : murder mystery which caused a thrill in me to watch this film prior to reading the book. Now you have described Vanthiyathevan as the central character or it is the story that revolves around the perspective of the character. Very interesting. Am a nerd after our Sangama Tamizh period during which is said to have had debates and lectures conducted by Sri Agastya Munivar (Maharishi Agastya) himself at the temple grounds in Madurai and even tutored the Pandyan kings 🙏I am actually Tamil but nativity in Palakkad so a mixed bag. Can dabble in Tamizh and Malayalam but don't know our history.

It's not anthem of Chola - Novel begins during Aadi Peruku. Context of song : Karthi playing Vanthiyadevan carrying message from Aditya Karikalan (played by Vikram) entering Chola land. He earlier heard about chola and was eager to explore. On seeing chola land he is mesmerized and this song is expression of the same.

This story happened around 1070 CE vandhyathevan (karthi) was not fictional. During the reign of emperor Raja Raja chola 1 he was the general of the chola army. Married Raja Raja "s sister kundavai (played by Trisha) .this chola empire captured present day malayala, Indonesia and compodia and became an lmperial power. Google it Rajendra Chola.
