Thanks for uploading this! I was lead animator, and I hadn’t seen this stuff in years. I still have a copy of the game, but never had a ps1. It’s dated af, but I am still proud of some of it. Painful to see animation frames cut for space, but it is what it is.

First looking at this game, it is is the animation which stands out as being a little ropey, or maybe it is the frame rate! Either way, can you give any further insight into the creation of this gem of a game. Why did they have to cut some of your frames etc?

@@hudeduge9240 yes that’s it exactly. The PS1 was an improvement over previous systems, but still had very finite storage on the disc, which always limited the number of frames. This was probably the lowest frame rate I ever worked with. I think most of the memory was dedicated to the lighting of environments, which was pretty groundbreaking for the day. It is hard for me to watch now because of that janky frame rate.

Times where bad back then with reviews. Games like this where often unproffessnally compared to others. Platformers/rpgs where compared to zelda and pokemon destroyed the monster raising catagory single handeldy.

I cried when I heard the main menu theme song. So many memories with this game. i never finished tho. I believe I got stuck in the graveyard part which scared me a lot as a kid lmao. I remember kinda going rush through the map just to avoid the enemies. Thanks for sharing this

I completely forgot I played this game back in the day. Wasn't even that memorable or a great game for me, perhaps it was even just a demo. But all of a sudden 3 days ago the theme song just popped into my head on repeat! Absolutely bizarre. I love this game. I remember my friend got it for me for my 12th birthday. I had never heard of it and thought it didn't look too good at first. When I began playing it, it quickly became one of my all time favorite PS1 games. I had played a bit of Zelda: Ocarina of Time at a friend's house around the same time, but I didn't have a N64 so I didn't get to finish the game until years later when I got a Gamecube for my 16th birthday. I remember thinking that Monkey Hero made me think of kid Goku from Dragon Ball, and the gameplay made me think of Zelda. Amazing game and I remember the last boss with the floor tiles falling out from under you or something. I think the boss was a bug or something and he flew around..? Been a long time haha... I don't recall much of the game from beginning and so on. I'm hoping for a Nintendo Switch port because that's the only console I own and plan to own for a while. Until then I'm gonna look at this, but not too much to spoil it just in case I end up getting an emulator :P

I was 56 min in the video yesterday but out of a sudden i decided to download an emulator and this game rom to play it myself. Right now i came back to say that i'm ready to fight Nightmare King but i'm missing 1 dream crystal and 2 peaches (if the total is 20) ... damn xD have to watch you anyway cuz i'm lost i've been everywhere and i can't seem to find those ! I loved this game so much ! This will be the first time i'll finish it, previously as a kid i think i only had 2 pages ... lol the one in the library and the other one on the beach, because english isn't my mother language and so as a kid i didn't knew nothing in english lol But now as a grown up i finnaly figured out every puzzle and it's super satisfying ! One of the best ps1 games for me ! Thank you for posting this video reminding me of this forgotten jewel ! Probably won't never happen but i would be down for a remaster and a sequel !

Thanks to your video I managed to find the missing peach! It was on the Secret Mine (where you get the hammer), I had searched everywhere else and had convinced myself I had already explored the mine thoroughly... Thank you! So i don't know if this was an anomaly but near the end of Dream King Temple 3:26:00 offscreen to the right there's a seemingly impossible to reach chest with a few coins in it. Maybe it was an oversight because it's not reachable with the dragon bone hover distance and can't be returned to with the dream staff as the rooms locked off after the boss is beat. However if you land on the last platform and don't go through the loading zone, fly right then up, you'll land on an invisible ledge offscreen, walk right to the wall and fly down again to get to the chest. Thanks for uploading this :) My copy never loaded the intro or end cutscenes and it was epic to finally see them!

At 3:26:02, if you fly right from the direction of the boss room, there is a hidden chest with 5 coins in it that's impossible to get to unless you fly at the map border that you can some reason stand on then fly to the chest as the distance is too far to fly directly to.
