Disciplinary Core Idea PS1A - Structure and Properties of Matter
In the first physical science video for the Next Generation Science Standards Paul Andersen explains the structure and properties of matter. He starts by explaining how all matter is made of about 100 smaller particles called matter. He explains a teaching progression for introducing the topic of matter K-12. This begins with a brief introduction to substances that can be scientifically observed at many levels. This eventually builds through molecules and pure substances to the subatomic structure of atoms and the importance of binding energy.

Thanks! The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will be released at the end of the month. States that adopt these standards will use them to plan the their instruction from grades K-12. I am creating these videos mainly for teachers of science to give them background on What science they should teach and When they should teach them. Hope that helps. -Paul

I wish I were as good of a teacher as you. I'm unsure of what students need to know and so am hesitant at expressing what little I do know. You just go right at it in small chunks with comments even about what the different age levels should be at. Very, very good.

I am far from an "authority". I wanted to understand the new standards and so I created the video series. Hope this helps.

Clouds are water droplets suspended. I was trying to motion to a non-cloud portion of the sky but was probably unsuccessful. Thanks for the clarification.

Just a point of clarification, at 0:26 you showed a picture of a cloud to represent water in the vapor or gas phase, but if we can see the cloud then that is actually water droplets in the liquid phase that are suspended in the atmosphere not really in the gas phase. I just make the point because when we try to help students grasp a particle model for the gas phase, water droplets do not mesh with our model of what water in the gas phase "looks like". This is not a huge issue but I think we as chemistry teachers need to be aware of the limitations of trying to show representations for gases in our daily lives since most of these gases are colorless an non-visible. Thank you for sharing your GREAT videos.

It's the grade level. For example, at 4:16 he starts talking about the level of detail you'd use to teach this standard to 8th graders, hence the 8 in the clock.
