PS3 Blu-ray Drive Doesn't Take/Eject Discs Fix

Repaired a PS3 for a coworker. It would not accept nor play discs even when manually loaded. It turns out the stepper motor for the laser was bad. Replacing that fixed it right up.
There's no part number for the stepper motor, so if you want a replacement part your best bet is to look up "PS3 laser motor" on eBay and use the pictures to find the correct part.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! If it wasn't for this video, I would not have found my very similar problem. Here's what happened: My PS3 would not play blu-ray discs (but would play DVDs just fine). So, I ordered a new laser "deck" from Ebay (the whole laser assembly you can see at 5:06). I replaced my old deck with the new one and..... then it would NOT even load a disc. After trying many things, and many KZbin videos, I finally found this one. That lead me to check the stepper motor of my "new" deck. Sure enough, the CABLE to the stepper motor was damaged. I salvaged the stepper motor (and attached cable) from my old deck, and installed it in the new one and..... It WORKS! Thank you!!

Thanks for the video! i had the same problem, that i couldn´t spin the motor. I noticed that the thread was bent and not in the bearing. so i used a screwdriver to put it back into the right place and now my drive is working again. My brother dropped the ps3 and that probably caused the problem :D

Appreciate it this so much! I tried to play a game after 3 years and ran into this issue when trying to insert the disk. In my case, it seems like the motor became stuck (from the combination of dirt and no use). All I did was move the lens up and down manually a little bit and clean the rail that it slides on. Looks like it did the trick. What a relief! I have a ton of PS3 games I still want to play. Thanks so much for sharing this! You saved my PS3!

The issue with the discs not wanting to go in is a problem with the placement of the gear syncing and not the drive. I just did this same thing by taking the disc out of the drive without letting the console do it and it messed up the sync with the mechanism pattern. So if someone opened the drive and played with it, they didnt resync it properly (I re-synced it by taking the bottom plate off and then manually winding the tray down with the gear). Now the rough stepper motor that might be an issue, yeah. My PS3 is not reading either and my motor moves rough.

I HV a same problem like tht. CD insert than no spinning, than press inject cd move out. Inset again no spin

Slot loading drive is fancy, but if this is going to break down on most of the product, I am not sure if it’s a good idea for the manufacturer to use it. Mine is broken as well. 😢 Probably that’s why Sony didn’t use it for the next version. It will also help with the cost reduction.

True. But I also think that Sony perfected it later on with the PS4. At least the PS4 Slim I have works smooth like butter.

With mine the white thing at the front that goes down when the disc is coming out and it's up when the disc is in the console am looking at it and it's completely down so i dont really know what to do any help??
