I need this done to mine. I just recently dropped my ps4 off at the local repair guy to have fixed knowing that I had this same problem. When I explained the problem and my suspension of what it could be, I was reinsured it shouldn't be a problem to repair. Well guess what? Got a phone call letting me know they replaced the hdmi port only to have the same issues and they do not have a in house person to replace the i.c. and apparently there is not a person in the whole city of Austin that can fix this problem. So I guess I'm doing it myself. Thanks for the excellent video guide! I really would love to send it to you for repair..

Would have been nice to capture the HDMI port testing on camera, although I suspect this is done this way intentionally so not to give away tricks of your business or because it's hard to get everything on camera AND the DMM. Glad you showed testing continuity of the video filters to the chip itself though, helped me verify my HDMI video filters as ok. I replaced my HDMI encoder chip and I now have video and sound...Many thanks for this and all your other content, you have shared and helped me and so many others, you do great things :)

Andrew, your video's are great. You are definitely someone who never gives up, like that ! Just had a ps4 with WLOD and flikkering black screen at random times - under microscope I saw 1 pin moved about 1mm inside, so that one needed replacement - replaced HDMI port, same problem - replaced HDMI IC, same problem - gone through your video's, measured everything again, all GOOD, so eventually concluded that the NEW HDMI IC chip was defected - replaced HDMI IC by another new one, and BOOM, working ! Satisfied, but still thinking, how could that happen ? Never seen a new defective HDMI IC chip, did you ?

Thanks. You are very good at what you do and at explaining it to others. Keep it up. Thanks to you, I got a blue light of death (long version) off ebay going with the 3 washers trick only to find white light of death after that. I fixed it by watching your videos and changing the hdmi encoder. I second your comment about hot air stations. My trusty Aoyue 968A+ got the old hdmi port out (it fell out whilst taking the shield off the hdmi ic on the other side of the board lol) but could not get the board hot enough to allow for aligning the hdmi port pins with a new port. Thankfully, the old port was OK and the previous owner had given up at that stage. Cheers.

Hi i have a ps4 white light problem and need advice. So i traded a faulty xbox one original for a supposed faulty ps4 original from a person that fixes consoles that wanted the Xbox for spares. So on the day i got home with the ps4 i used my ps3 cables to power it on and it miraculously powered on which surprised me as the controller was connected properly using the usb cable. But i saw the screen flash black then back to the home screen which i didn't know what is was then it did it once more and was displaying perfectly. After about 5 mins of waiting for it too show some errors or switching off because i did not expect it to work i plugged in my usb speakers to the other usb port on the front while the controller was plugged in. That was when the screen went black instantly. I didn't know what happened and pressed the eject button and a copy of GTA 5 came out which means the console was still powered on. When i plug the controller and speakers in on my ps3 super slim at the same time is says too many devices drawing power something like that. So i think it drew too much power on the ps4 and caused a wlod on the ps4. Im trying to do a home repair with minimal tools and if you could give me some idea of what the usb ports could have shorted eg a transistor or fuses or something. It still powers on and everything but that was the defining factor i think that contributed to the white light of death. Any recommendations would help as ive watched a lot of KZbin videos and most are the ic chip or some transistor . Its a original ps4 with wlod 1116A

So you have no continuity across the filter? Check it from the top of the filter to the bottom - if no continuity replace the filter. If there is, then check it from IC to filter and filter to via. When you find which side the break is run the appropriate link wire. Cheers.

Hello. I'm starting to learn, to repair things. I have a ps4 1116a, which does not give an image. I did as you explained, but even so, there is still no picture. I noticed that near the hdmi encoder, as you said, it has 4 components, all in a row. They seem to me to be capacitors and resistors, but I don't know. Can you tell if this affects anything, in not giving an image? The components are the ones you mentioned.

Ill be doing this on my ps3 this weekend. I like the method you used for soldering the new chip on. Most seem to put the chip on bare traces(no solder), then put a big glob of solder or solder paste to one side & drag solder all the way around. May work but it looks easier in vids & its easy to mess up doing it that way imo.

First testing from the pins to the alternates had me confused as I couldn’t really see what he was doing and my motherboard is completely different from that one. Would really like to test everything before I buy a new chip. Also what are you putting on the chip before removing it. And what temperatures are best for removing the chip. Mine didn’t have a cover over the chip and it’s directly behind the port on the same side.

@AndrewPaul6 жыл бұрын
Sound but no image is typically down to a bad encoder, however as you've just changed it I'd be more inclined to suspect a loose / bridged pin. Give them all the 'nudge' test with a tweezer blade and see if you can get any to move and resolder them if they do. If you've any shorts / bridges between pins then these will need to be removed. If that all looks good, check the EMI filters to ensure they're within spec.

Tomorrow I will take again, a new HDMI IC chip and post the results. I like to mention that I desolder the HDMI IC chip somehow different, then how you do it. I use low melt solder to lower the melting point from 217C to 150C, then use hot air to desolder the IC chip. I think it is a little bit more safe. Do not want to damage the surrounding components.

What temperature do you have your soldering iron set to for applying the leaded solder to the pads?
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
+Chesley McDaniel It's self-regulating so I have no control over it. The iron calculates the needed temperature by measuring the heat draw across the tip when touched to place where the joint is required - so I don't know what temperature it's using. Cheers.

+Chesley McDaniel No probs - however, my TP9 tip has blown this last week and I'm waiting for a replacement so I'm back using my old solder station for now for fine work. To drag solder effectively that station has to be set to 485 Celsius.

+Andrew Paul Thank you for that. I wouldn't have expected it would need to be that hot. Now I see why I was having trouble. My iron only reaches 450 Celsius but I was afraid to turn it up that much out of fear that it might fry the HDMI chip. Have been having hell with my ps4, pulled a pad where the Panasonic HDMI chip mounts (due to having a much to large hot air gun and being afraid of burning up the MOBO), so I attached a very small jumper wire to the proper circuit but still have WLOD. Now after several attempts, I broke off a leg on the Panasonic chip where I had the jumper wire.

My computer also plugged into the same wall socket doesn't show video now either. Is there a way to fix the ps4's video signal, it still turns on and shows the white light but no video
@guitarkid21848 жыл бұрын
Also do you think it was some sort of the surge because it smelled like something had heated up and started melting, plastic maybe
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
+GuitarKid218 Hi, yes sounds like a bad one. If it's done both your computer and your PS4 then it sounds like a rather nasty power surge. I'd get the wall socket checked by an electrician to be sure it's not localised to that one socket - always best to be safe rather than sorry in these instances, especially when dealing with mains voltages. Anyway - as far as the PS4 goes it's probably frazzled the HDMI Encoder IC or part of the circuit which it controls. If you're not familiar with troubleshooting these things then it's probably going to be a bit tricky and would probably be best suited to a pro console technician who knows a bit about component-level repair. Good luck!

Hi Andrew great video followed your video's and decided with your guide to change Panasonic IC chip but regrettably as everything was going so well, after removing the IC chip I noticed the four filters have come off. What's the best way to put them back on or am I screwed? :-( Thanks
@AndrewPaul9 жыл бұрын
+Naz Nadeem just pop them back on - they're not directional so just line them up back on their pads, hold them with some tweezers while they reattach. Once they're all back on turn the airflow down a bit, add flux and reflow. They'll all line back up perfectly and you should hopefully be good to go!

scrap boards are the best bet - PS3s have the same filters and scrap PS3 boards are pennies on eBay so just drop for one of these and swap them back over - you'll have a few spare then too :)

+Andrew Paul Just for your info I found an article on the net regarding the filters and one guy used a 30 guage wire to make a jumper connection, as long as it works that works for me :-) Thanks Buddy for your help

i have got one ps4 with distorted display i resoldered the hdmi pins. now its a bit batter but still little distortion after few seconds but nothing happens when move the cable. distortion is tiny bit after few seconds with a little distorted sound. should i just follow everything from start to end or just change the hdmi i?. i have a doner board on me to get hdmi ic from.
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
+TaaRiiFrp Check to ensure the HDMI comb isn't out of shape - they can warp slightly which can cause intermittent issues like you describe. To be sure you can check connectivity of each pin with a multimeter. if all looks good and you've got a spare IC then give it a try and see what happens :)
@TaaRiiFrp8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Paul thanks for replying mate, i actually follow all steps but hdmi comb as i don't have the diagram for that and eventually changed the hdmi ic from a doner board and it all works fine now. can you provide the hdmi comb's ways? and how do we differentiate the if it is a graphics card problem or hdmi ic problem as both problems resulted in corrupt and distorted display?
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
+TaaRiiFrp The comb is just the plastic tab inside the HDMI port - you can't change this on it's own - you'd have to change the port but happily you don't have to do that now. It's very easy to differentiate between an APU failure and a HDMI Encoder IC issue. An encoder IC issue will cause one or a combination of static, an over-saturation of one particular colour, the loss of a particular resolution, or several resolutions / blank screen with no audio, solid red/green/blue screen with no audio etc. APU failure will cause the console to display as normal however the image will start to drop detail and cause glyphs / malformed polygons etc. This will get worse very quickly before the machine would lock / power off.

+Andrew Paul appreciate it, cheers mate.

Hey Paul good day. I have a ps4 which I'm trying to repair, pins 1 to 12 all show low resistance to the ground, it's like they are all connected, multi meter bins no matter which pin I touch from 1-12, 13 -19 are ok, have you ever come across such?
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
Remove the encoder IC then recheck continuity to ground. If it disappears, replace the encoder IC. I'd also check the EMI filters in such instances as these might also be damaged - sounds like that console has taken a fairly hefty whack with a decent amount of current back through the port.

Yes, the owner said that the flat screen TV shorted out. And after that the console never was able to output any video signal

Hi Andrew, I'm new to repairing but I've taken on the challenge of repairing a PS4 original, I found (SAB-001 model). Tested the HDMI pins and pins 1-12 (all the data pins) are shorting to ground. Is this normal? Everything else around it looks fine. The IC encoder side had some sticky residue on it so is this likely a bad IC? Thank you so much for the video! It's been amazingly useful! Keep up the excellent explanations!

First of all thank u for your help. Sadly i have another doubt. Checking on the internet for the Panasonic chip MN86471A i found out that there are lots of models with various prices of the same chip. May you tell me whats the difference ? Quality of the component? it seem strange because every chip is sold by panasonic. Of course im not an expert , thanks for your support.

I have a similar problem but the PS4 outputs audio but no picture. The HDMI port looked fine so could it be the HDMI transmitter in my case?
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
Hi, indeed it could - the Encoder IC is responsible for muxing audio and video signals so this can be a sign of a failing Encoder.

Check to see if pin 4 of the HDMI is short to ground (Usually the case of the IC short with no picture but have sound)
@victorclausson40398 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, Stevie! Since I wrote my first comment I've replaced the HDMI port and HDMI Encoder. Still no picture. All the legs I've soldered looks great and have good connection, no loose legs, no shorts between legs, but still no picture. Although I haven't tried what you said and measure pin 4 on the HDMI port to ground. I'll try that tomorrow. BUT, today when everything was finished I tested it. No picture, tried safe mode (holding for the 2:nd beep), still no picture. Then I just left it with WLOD. Turned it off and on again and I got the PS logo and a blue screen with a lot of text in different language I think and some pictures of what the Dualshock 4 buttons do. Then the picture just disappeard and I haven't managed to get a picture again. I didn't touch anyting I just left it booting on my desk, sitting back watching. Thing to keep in mind! I'm using a PC monitor for testing so I can't hear no sound for the moment. The maximum resolution is something like 1600x1200 so could that be a problem getting a picture even in safe mode (480p)? I should be able to get some picture in safe mode, right? I don't have a controller so I'm just testing it with the power button on the console. Would I be able to do someting different to test with a controller?
@stevieselvey14078 жыл бұрын
Have you tested continuity from the upper part of the HDMI pins to all relevant points? Test the system on a TV to make sure too :) Sounds like at least one of your solder connections is not quite right. Do you have a microscope?
@wrxsubaru028 жыл бұрын
Dude, remember me? So I seem to still be having the problem but it hardly ever happens during game play since I changed out the thermal grease but it does still randomly happen... I noticed that if I move the ps4 while its plugged in and powered on, it almost always gets the WLOD causing it to freeze so I think there is some kind of short going on because if i squeeze on the right side of the ps4 it freezes it instantly every time and I get the WLOD. What do you think the problem is?
@wrxsubaru028 жыл бұрын
I purchased a new HDMI port but I haven't replaced it yet because I want to be sure of the problem since the symptoms kind of strange compared to others out there.
@AndrewPaul8 жыл бұрын
Squeezing the right side would suggest APU issues.
@wrxsubaru028 жыл бұрын
I had a feeling it could be that but at the same time i wondered if it was a short or bad connection... I guess i will have to do a little more investigating. i noticed if i moved the hdmi it would short out too if i tapped it just a little

Im pretty new to this, have been doing small repairs here and there, and have practised a bit on other boards ive had lying around. Ive not had an issue removing anything before this.

450C should be more than enough to be fair. The likelihood is the calibration of the air station temperature probe - which station are you using?

Andrew Paul I figured it out, I was just being a bit scared to use a higher air flow. Went ahead with the repair yesterday on a console that was just displaying noise y "snow" patterns. Now the console isn't displaying anything. I don't see any bridges on any of the legs, and the pads looked fine upon removal. Recon the new IC is dead? Also, I tested some of the legs on my multi meter in continuity mode, and they do have a connection, but they're not bridged from what I see. Is this normal? Sorry for the questions, thanks for your time.

Be careful with this one - what resistance is the DMM showing when measuring these points? They typically measure between 50-90ohms which most meters will beep for in continuity mode but isn't necessarily an indication of a short - merely that there is a low resistance between those points. Have you tested continuity of the EMI filters and ensured there are no loose pins on the encoder with the nudge test at all yet?
@getagriptv67186 жыл бұрын
it is 48.7 M-ohms that is from the Ground to those points

Hello Andrew Paul, I have a PS4 that does not display image on screen. I changed the HDMI port for a new one of more quality, but still no image. However, the TV detects the HDMI signal. Even when I restart the video parameters of the PS4 (pressing 9 seconds the power button), the image is displayed 1 or 2 seconds, but immediately the signal is lost again. Do you think this could be a problem with the Panasonic Chip? I hope you can help me. Thank you
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
+Ernesto Fernández I'll more or less guarantee its the IC providing the new port has no loose pins or bridges.
@pezu207 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your quick response!! I want to emphasize that I have been able to see the image on the screen for a few seconds but the signal is lost immediately. Knowing this, you can ensure that the HDMI port is well installed, right? I would not want to buy the IC chip at all.
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
I'd be tempted in that case to purchase a faulty board (i.e. BLOD) and then you have all the parts necessary. The few times I've seen them do this specifically I've ended up changing the big capacitors and transistor packages to the rear of the IC - some of those also required a new IC afterwards. If you have the donor board to hand then you have all the parts for every eventuality.
@pezu207 жыл бұрын
Agree Andrew Paul! I think I'll follow your directions! I'll tell you how I was. Thank you very much

Hello Andrew. Very nice and educational video. I have a question. My PS4 boots and i get a white light too. Thing is, my TV does not recognize the device. It's like i don't have any device connected at all. But my ps4 boots normally. And i know this because i have it connected with optical output to my speaker setup, and i hear the booting sounds and the music from the menu just fine. So the ps4 is open and operational, but i get no signal at all. I opened it and hdmi port seemed fine. The encoder chip was replaced by a techinician at the end of April, but seems like the problem showed up again. Could it be that the encoder chip failed again? Could it be that the connection didn't last and probably just need some more soldering? The technician closed the encoder chip with the metallic cover so i have to open this first to check it out. And for this, i need to buy the equipment you use (heat gun mostly as i have the other stuff). Would i be sure that it is encoder chip's fault and not something else? I have no problem trying to fix it, but i want to make sure that this repeat in the future and i have a faulty encoder chip every 1 and half month. PS. Sorry for the long post. Hope you can help me. Of fource i checked my ps4 with multiple monitors and cables, problem still persists. Just to clear things out :)
@AndrewPaul6 жыл бұрын
It could be a faulty Encoder or a bad port / lead. the fact you still have audio is weird. I'm not saying the Encoder cannot fail in this manner (it can) but I've seen it literally just the once out of who knows how many of these I've done by now. They normally fail entirely with the loss of both picture and audio. Much more likely will either be a bad HDMI lead or a loose / pushed back pin in the HDMI port. Give the port a visual check and see if any pins are pushed back / out or are sitting proud of the centre plastic comb. I'd imagine the original repair will be under some form of guarantee? Will the shop not take a look and confirm the issue for you if you ask them?
@lord.frosty6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Paul About the first paragraph, is it possible that the audio transmitted via optical output is processed through a different chip on the board? And the ic encoder chip is only responsible for the audio output of hdmi? The shop does not accept my ps4 for guarantee since I tried to open it. Why would I open it if it worked correctly in the first place? Seems like something went wrong with their repair. Can you explain what exactly do you mean by hdmi lead? Thank you for your time.
@AndrewPaul6 жыл бұрын
Ah OK - Optical audio comes from Southbridge so that explains that. If the port still appears physically OK then I'd guess it's another failed encoder. If you haven't already, change the HDMI lead when you repair it again as it could be a lead issue which is causing the chip to fail.
@lord.frosty6 жыл бұрын
I see. When you are saying hdmi lead, you mean the hdmi cable?
@herrdered7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew! Thanks for the vid. I measured the path from the chip to the filters and figured out that all pins going to the HDMI are shortened to ground. There is no physical damage on the port. I am consider changing the chip. What do you think? Regards, Erwin
@AndrewPaul7 жыл бұрын
I'd bet that's a very good possibility. Remove the current IC and see if the shorts disappear. If they do, change the IC.
@herrdered7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew! I changed the HDMI IC and the shorts disappeared. As the metal shield around the chip was very hard to remove, I cut it away. Therefore, I tested the PS4 without the metal shield on the HDMI chip. The TV is getting a signal now, but still there is no picture. You can observe some noise (similar to the noise of an analog TV receiver) when the TV is getting the HDMI signal, before the TV is turning black. So, my main question is: Also without the metal shield, I should get a better signal, shouldn’t I? (I want to avoid placing the metal shield there again, it was a pain removing it already 😊 ) Regards,Erwin
