Ka 7al PS4 Pro is still stuck with that aweful 30fps. They could use that extra horse power in Ps4 pro to push 60 fps in most games and max out graphical fidelity at 1080p or 1440p but they chose to go after 4k and that too so poorly that it is a blurry upscaled mess with shitty textures. They also fucked up by removing the 4k bluray player and increasing their shitty PS network subscription cost.

If you're curious how the checkerboard technique works, it's quite impressive. Essentially the base idea is similar to (although way better than) interlacing, in that, if motion is completely still, you actually *do* have a native 4K image. What the engine actually does is render half the pixels on one frame, and the other half the next. Obviously if nothing's moving, the game can simply combine those two renders together to result in a perfect 4K image. However, when things start moving, the engine *isn't* upscaling or interpolating. What it's actually doing is looking at the previous two rendered frames, and reprojecting those pixels forward to "fill in the gaps" in the checkerboard pattern. Every pixel that gets rendered also has motion vector data rendered as well. Essentially, the renderer can say "this pixel is moving 65 degrees at 3 pixels/frame". Then the PS4's scaler chip will reproject that pixel forward by extrapolating where that pixel should be on the current frame. It does this reprojection technique using pixels from the last two frames, which allows the scaler to fill in the gaps in the current frame's checkerboard pattern. This results in an image that is almost a perfect reconstruction of native 4K resolution. The fact that it uses the checkerboard pattern, as well as the two frame reprojection technique, rather than interpolation, makes this about 100x better than any deinterlacer could have ever done on traditionally interlaced content. The areas where you might see some blurrier edges or textures are when things are either moving very fast, very erratically, or there's just too much parallax going on to reproject accurately. Essentially the way it reconstructs the image is similar to how temporal AA reconstructs near perfect smooth edges. So if you've seen how impressive that technique can be in recent games such as Uncharted 4, the same level of quality at reconstructing 4K will be present in this checkerboard rendering system. Honestly, after seeing some of the games close up on a 4K screen, I wish developers could use this for current PS4 games that run at 900p, as it would likely allow them to render at simulated 1080p instead, and would look better than the native 900p imo.

Andy Gilleand you're describing interlacing and temporal reconstruction, checkerboard is neither. it works on single frames and fills in the blanks once it's made a checkerboard, similar to how msaa works for edges. neither of the ones you described are used.

basically youre paying $400 for a 1800p resolution checkerboarded up to 4k with all the eye candy but at 30fps with the option to go for a 1080p 60fps with a bit less eye candy maybe one setting down or 1080p 30fps with all eye candy if you cant do 4k, with full HDR support and some ganes running native 4k FOR $400 and a 1tb harddrive witha blue ray player. This is an amazing deal. plus they kept 8gb of gddr5 because unlike Microsoft, they will keep parity so no one on the regular one is left behind. With 12 gb on the Scorpio, anymore than 8 and you lose parity for future games.

"4k with all the eye candy " Exactly that is not the case. didn't you see the Tomb Raider PS4 Pro vs native 4K PC comparison? The texture quality was shit, some lighting effects were completely missing, upscaling artifacts and so on. The PS4 Pro isn't fast enough to really make 4K look better than 1080p in newer games. The 4K thing is just marketing bullshit. 1080p 60FPS would be the only reason to buy the Pro, but there are lots of games that can't run in 60 FPS at all because the Pro still has the same weak netbook CPU as the PS4.

Sebastian Paulus​ texture quality shit?? Digital foundry said it was high settings, one below max and the missing fire effects are excusable as it isn't a finshed build yet. Secondly its fast enough to run 1800p(900p of 1080p) and checkerboard it with hdr which is much better than 1080p. It has the powet nessecary with its fast ram. Even Rich here says it look much better and he looks at ganes running native 4k. He even explains how it looks much better than 1080p. And that same netbook cpu isnt weak because its certainly running those games fine. Its efficient, its runs at 2.1ghz and has the power of new intel cpus runnimg 3ghz and over. I think it's weird that Sony and Microsoft are now aiming for 4K with the new consoles. The previous ones had already problems with keeping a steady 60 fps at 1080p. 60 fps is the first thing you should worry about since it affects the gameplay. But apparently a higher resolution is more important than the playability of a game... I hope for the people that will buy these consoles that all developers will include multiple options so that you can turn down the visuals in favour of the framerate. I mean higher resolutions is good and all but the first thing they should worry about is the framerate.

Honestly imo 4K is not worth it (especially not with this console). Sure it looks better but the amount of frames you have to give up on is too high imo. 1440p would actually better imo. It looks better and you wouldn't lose as much frames with it in comparison to 4K. I'd say framerate is way more important than the resolution.

Clearly, you don't understand what the word "Capable" mean. A 4k Capable Machine/System means it can do true 4k on selected products and features. It is on The Last of Us. But that is originally a PS3 game so it makes sense. Games with low graphics like indies or remasters will probably be able to do native 4k and modern looking AAA games will be upscaled. That seems to be what's happening.

yes, a 970 can "run", SOME, games at 4k. there are videos here on youtube of it. but it doesn't do it well across the board, it would never be considered a go to " 4k 30fps" card. sure, extremely well made games (gta v) and games like roller coaster tycoon and minecraft should run at 4k without issues. but its not enough for the rest. to add, if you are turning down the game settings to hit 30fps, it defeats the purpose, imo. to really be in the safe zone at 4k you NEED at least a 980ti/1070. thats the recommended minimum card for someone who wants consistent 4k. otherwise you will end up needing to upgrade much sooner then you think. even a regular 980 is on the boarder. i had a 980ti hybrid SLI setup, even that didnt guarantee me 4k 60fps in every game. though it did do 4k 30fps without any issues. i came from a 9800gtx+ > gtx 660 sli > 295x2 > 980ti hybrid sli > single 980ti. i play on a 4k tv and have definitely put in the time and research in finding the best setup. as of now i am sitting on a single 980ti until the 1080ti hybrid cards come out. i almost went with a 970 as well, but at that time i happened to get the 295x2 for like $550 (they were usually $650-$700 on ebay). i figured it had a higher FPS per dollar then the 970. i did have some issues with shit drivers in the beginning, but the catalyst updates really made a difference. still kind of miss that card.

***** What is your point here? Can the PS4 do 4k natively? Yes it can, in fact there are games confirmed to be doing that, albeit with lower grade graphics. I love how you differentiate between AMD and Nvidia flops as if that is relevant for consoles. The API determines how effecient the flop count is used, and consoles bar none have way better API for that sort of thing. There is a reason why the new AMD gpus run the new Doom just as well as the same tflop nvidia gpus.

I think it's great Sony are delivering a system than can output 'near' 4k, plus bells & whistles, for just $399, crucially, this November. The 1070 will get you true 4k with console settings or a tad higher (seeing as consoles hover around High, with shadows often lowered to Normal and textures to Ultra in many cases) with similar framerates. The PS4 Pro on the other hand will get you an experience that's very compelling for the price, even if it isn't true 4k: And that's the takeaway here: It is a substantial improvement over base 1080p and no amount of saying 'it's an upscale' is going to detract from the appreciable end result.

First things First... RIP Ozzy, I Love gaming, but the Loss of LIfe is way more important than talking about the video games we love. 2nd.... While the PS4 Pro does have the same 8 Gigs of Ram in it as does the standard Ps4, the Bandwidth has been increased by 24%. So That means the ram alone is gonna be 24% faster loading than the standard Ps4. That can help with loading in high end textures in 1080p games as well as 4K. Faster streaming is always a plus. Third.... and this is the BIGGEST reason why I think the PS4 Pro is Necessary..... A lot of the games I Play and plan to get are ALREADY 60fps on PS4. Star Wars BattleFront, Battlefield 4, BATTLEFIELD 1, Uncharted 4 Multiplayer, TitanFall 2, PlanetSide 2 (sometimes lol). All those games but the last one run at 900p. On PS4 Pro Sony mandates that Every Single game on the new System has to run at a Native Full HD 1080p Resolution. To finally Play Battlefield 1 or even TitanFall 2 at a REAL Full HD with Ultra settings on a Console is the reason I'm getting the PS4 Pro Day One. My PC friends Play their games at Ultra settings on their high end rigs that cost easily $1500 plus. For 4K even more. On Nov 10th I'm getting that for a fraction of the price. $399.

You sound a bit biased, remember the Xbox one S you can get a lot cheaper than the pro, and if you're referring to the 2 TB Xbox one S then that has double the hard drive of the pro plus all Xbox one S have an actual 4K Blu-ray player which the pro does not. No point comparing the Pro to the S, Pro is more than 3 times more powerful. Ultimately, if you want a 4k uhd player that can play xbox one games as well, get an S. Don't know why people are upset about the PS4 Pro, yeah the Scorpio will be more powerful but how much will it cost? The Scorpio is so different that i think it will be called Xbox Two. In hardware what is similar to the Xbox One? the ram, the GPU, CPU? from DDR3 to GDDR5 is very different, the CPU people say is gonna be ZEN, GPU 3x more power or almost. They are gonna change everything. Next year maybe Sony will cut the PS4 Pro by $50 to sell it for $350 and the Slim $250 who knows.... then the Scorpio comes out at $500 at least... It will not cost $400 or $450, MS said is gonna be a premium console. Hell if they sell it for $400 i will buy one and forget about building a PC or for $450 with a game. If what i think happens the Scorpio will cost at least $150 more than the PS4 Pro. If you think the 30% more powerful hardware is worth the cost then buy it. People think that the Scorpio will cost the same as the PS4 Pro or maybe $50 or $100 more. I think it will cost $150 or $200 more than the PS4 Pro, could be $100 more nobody knows. Sony knows the PS4 Pro it will be less powerful and you know what they are going to do cut the prices and work for the PS5. They already won this gen with a big a margin... The problem the Xbox One had is that when it launch $500 with the kinect and $400 without it the same price as the PS4 and less powerful, we all know that. Which one to buy?
