@@NiGHTS1980 It will be interesting to see how people respond when the next cycle of consoles come out. Imo, PS5 and XSX were fortunate to be in such high demand due to covid. Haven’t really been a fan of PlayStation past the PS2. It felt like back then they really tried to win people over with their exclusives, now everything really is just COD ripoff, online battle Royale, or Uncharted-like game #19,826. The coolest thing to come out of the PS5 so far has been Astro’s Playroom, and it was a free console pack in, made by a developer that they just decided to close for good.

One thing I like about this console (and this gen) is the varying game prices. Not every game comes out at $70, there are plenty of titles on the shelves that come out at $30-60 day one, illustrating that not every game worth it's salt needs to be a $70 AAA high budget blockbuster.

Adam, I must say. I've gotten heavy into retro over the past few years. You'd probably consider me really young though (especially for that), I'm almost 23. But dude, having waited to get a ps5 and being a simpler dude into the retro stuff, the ps5 is kinda overwhelming now that I have one. It seems like it's only partially a game console, and much more some complex, expensive entertainment "machine." Makes me think of your generation recaps where you talk on how you saw the progression of graphics and big shifts in the industry. Makes me feel like I really get where you're coming from! I'm getting used to it but man, it seems night and day even from the ps4.

Adam if you look at Retro gaming sales, one of the biggest problems with Virtual Console-like purchase systems is pricing. If you look at the Wii to WiiU VC, had Nintendo reduced the price to half of what they were, or made all games a standard price, and not jack up certain games like Earthbound to $2 more than the standard VC SNES price, it would have done far better. It's harder to justify that many repurchases of older games when ROMs are so readily available, and most Emulators do a superior job to what Nintendo offered. Including filters, speed up options, controller layout options and multiple controller type supports, added graphical layers on top of filtering (and beyond just AA and AF, often with special packs that mix and match layered functionality for fixed variations on the look), added cheat code support. SNES9x on my Wii works better than native Wii SNES. Sounds better, is more accurate with most SFX, is just as stable, and I have a TON of features. I would have been happy to buy up the library of VC games given they're digital purchases had 8-bit era been $1~2, 16-bit at the $2~3, and 32-bit in the $3~4 range. There's no reason for them to be any higher than those numbers. The price points made mass purchasing for most gamers very limiting especially as general price points started to go up for new games, and for remasters and remakes. Remasters going from the 29.99 price point into the 49.99 price point, and remakes going from 39.99~49.99 price points to 49.99~59.99, now some are 69.99? It's a bit much when you know the cost of development isn't nearly as high, so they're trying to use risk and sales analysis to work out the highest profit potential to sales numbers potential to fill in gaps in their budgets so the end up in the black. When much of that AI data collection is VERY limiting and hard to discern as it's far less predictable than they assume given reactionary comments both on social media, and in board room meetings that leak out related to expected sales to actual sales numbers. Either shock for how many, or shock for how poorly they did. So their modeling has exceedingly limited ranges of categories and potential factors to account for. Nevermind the amount of player backlash over a LOT of very poorly handled rereleases, remasters, and remakes. SE being the one with the widest range of responses from great (Star Ocean 2), to horribad (Chrono Cross). Or you get the very poor handling of company responses to certain problems, like Dragon Quest Builders 2 on Steam had a lot of returns due to a game breaking but that starts early (is fixable for everyone, but a nightmare to get around if it triggers as it requires a clean uninstall and a clean re-insall then a hope and prayer). The bug was fixed, but had they been active in responding to complaints and reassuring that a bug fix would come soon, they'd probably have had 1~20% of the returns they ended up with, and an 85~95% rating on Steam. It's just one example with a re-release of an already popular game (though in this case it's due to the Dragon Quest team just being really bad at communication in general, and not caring, then making decisions based on their own faults that misread the room and what happened...like putting Builders 1 on mobile to less than 5% the total sales on PC for Builders 2 after accounting for returns of 2). Sorry, I tend to run on tangents, and write a lot (this used to be considered shorthand and concise...times have changed). However the point of the last paragraph is companies have less concern or care for their handling of and total possible sales potential of even rereleases of CURRENT games, not even retro. So we really do not know the market potential as they've handled things so poorly. I do recall a LOT of early complaints back in the day for the VC release prices. A lot of players who wanted to repurchase but couldn't work it into their budgets when they had limited funds, an ever increasing cost of living, and their preference to instead save up for new games. They wanted to buy the VC games, and old PS1 games on PSN, but it wasn't worthwhile, and that would account for a lot of people. Tack on adults with families so they have other expenses to account for (and savings for rainy days and college funds, etc), and even adults who want to buy a house instead of rent all their life. That adds extra savings burdens that makes it far more difficult to accept an $8 SNES game. It's probably why the NES / SNES / Genesis Mini's did so well (proof positive there's a HUGE market and demand for it). The value to purchase was under $1 per game when you factor in the hardware and everything that went along with it. Why can't VC games be priced at that point? They'd sell millions of copies of every game. Similarly with compilation games like Genesis compilation games do well, except that over time they rerelease the same games too often, but the reason they do well is the cost per game is typically under $1. Sometimes those compilations include 32-bit games. Meaning looking at PSN prices...what's the value? Nintendo is the worst in this sense. So is it really "niche"? Or is it just a value decision and that life is FAR more costly now than in the 90's (like 3x more expensive) and companies need to re-evaluate everything related to retro?

The starvation of PS2 and 3 has lead me to buy my first gaming PC and it's portable...the Asus Rog Ally. Most interesting part of a console generation for me is when the 2nd generation games appear, often 2 years in. When the games are designed with that specific hardware in mind. This year has been pretty good for gaming but it hasn't seemed as exciting as previous generations and what I've enjoyed most have been remakes like RE4 and Dead Space

It’s been tested and when resetting the system to factory, it will unregister the disc drive, meaning that it will require a internet connection again to set up. Xbox series one and all Xbox consoles since have this issue as well. All require Internet connection to set up. There hasnt really been a need to get the console up to this point. We are just now starting to see next gen only games that arent being released on PS4 so its only now the time to really buy. But in saying that there is a more pressing issue in that these AAA games are now taking 5-6 years to make and we're effectively getting one game per developer per generation. And thats sad. Remember when you had 3 Uncharted games + The Last of Us, 3 Resistence games, 3 Ratchet games, 2 GoW games all made in one console generation? Yeah, those days are long gone. Now you pay $500 for a console and get one Spider-Man game and 1 God of War game and by the time the next game is due the PS6 will be out.

Lyin Cryin Jim Ryan didn’t close Japan Studio. He consolidated the teams into one and got rid of a lot of people. Which still really really sucks. Pivoting to the west, moving HQ to San Francisco, conforming Japan only games to western censorship rules, it’s all been an unmitigated disaster. I haven’t bought a PS console since 2010 and it’s been great. I would be glad to return to this eco system if they started being Japanese centric again. I own a PS5 1st edition disc and the thought of a redesign in a PlayStation Anniversary seems so appealing. I really enjoy the PS5 as a system but hide it away behind my monitor (I even put console stickers on it) because I absolutely cannot stand the site of it. As a millenial, the tactile and visual experience of the console means a lot. I loved the GameCube and Dreamcast and partly for the games, partly timing but also the consoles themselves were fun and memorable. The PS5 was a visual disappointment and for an expensive, powerful system it feels cheap (though I know it is not internally, which adds to frustration). Oh well! I’m also hoping to get a PS Remote as I love the freedom the Switch gives to play in bed (smallish apartment, no tv just computer monitors).

Especially with Sony's usual slow first few years on launch of consoles. Playstation has definitely been maddeningly quiet in general with showcasing first party beyond wolverine and live services. Hopefully we get 1st party showcase early to mid 24 to see the single player games that usually come in the middle to end of gen.

I’ve had my PS five since lunch today and it’s still my least used system out of all three…. And I think there’s like three PS five games in existence and i best all of them…. And couldn’t even tell you what they were about because none of them were memorable. I just remember in Spider-Man two I fought venom about seven times till it got boring.

Why hate jim for saying that nobody wants to play old games? He’s just speaking the truth, we could’ve ended up with back compatibility with the older PS games just for 99.99% of gamers to not use it. Why be mad at the fact that he wanted to cancel support for the vita store? It’s seriously old. Xbox & Nintendo have stopped their store fronts on newer platforms compared to the vita?

Proof is in the pudding, people were extremely pissed over it. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean others don't.

We now have the PS5 Slim. The console that requires you to connect to the Internet in order to register the disc drive. A $500 console mind you. As legendary as the Xbox One SAD console. Aka Xbox One S All Digital.
@edgaryzen4925 Жыл бұрын
But the One Sad edition was cheap and sadly preferable by gen z for the $. It went low as $150! This pS5 is insulting $500!

I liked the video as you requested. The only comment I have is unrelated to the top but more about how close that shelf is to the door? Is it actually overlapping? or is it exactly nudged up? let me know Adam. As I'm still battling with the door/wall/shelf predicament.
@AdamKoralik Жыл бұрын
It slightly hangs past the door frame by about an inch, annoying but unavoidable.

If it weren't for backwards compatibility I would have never play Psychonauts because that was on Game Pass

PS5 has been somewhat of a disappointment, not many real games that you have to have.

Yea really only Spider-Man this year and the third game of any series that doesn’t really change all that much starts to feel a little eh even if it is well made.

I'm still perfectly content with my PS4 Slim. The PS5 doesn't have any must-have exclusives that interest me.

I agree, it has been kinda easy, not having one the last 3 years.

With the longer development times now a days,expect that.Versus 7th gen you can expect a new game from the studio every 2-3 years

Ps3 was the last true next generation system that Sony made.Ps4 didn't have most of the ps3 features and now ps5 doesn't have enough games.WHAT IS GOING ON AT SONY?

"Is there some amazing thing i had a brain fart and missed, tell me in the comments". Ahem.. let me clear my throat .. PSVR2!!!! Jesus. ;) No but realy, that thing is amazing. If you havent played gran tursimo 7 in VR, you havent played grand turismo 7. Same for resident evil village. Just mind blowing. And the market leading VR innovation from sony lile eye tracking and headset haptics.. brilliant.

There could be more big exclusive titles, but I understand it makes sense to release the games for both PS5+4, because of the 100+ million PS4 owners. Love my PS5 so far and had many hours of awesome gaming experiences with it already.

The ps5 slim with the attachable disc drive is something I have been saying they should have done since the one s all digital was released. Very glad Sony is finally doing that.

Haven't bought one yet. Just felt it wasn't worth it for the games that were out. Now that MGS Delta was announced, it was a for sure must buy now. Been thinking about getting one before the holidays for Spider-Man 2 but feel a PS5 Pro will be out soon.

I think that 2023 has been a turning point for the PS5 and Xbox Series. We went from shortages and tons of crossgen games for the first 2 years to now having them both readily available and having exclusive games utilizing the power of the console. 2023 has definitely been the best year in gaming since 2017, not just for PlayStation and Xbox but also Nintendo since they had by far their best year since 2017. I think that we definitely don’t need a PS5 Pro or another midgen Xbox because they’re more than powerful enough. Because of the first 2 years of almost no exclusives and lack of availability, I don’t expect to see the PS6 or next gen Xboxes until 2028 or even later.

There’s a couple things that you got wrong on this video. The first one being that the PlayStation portal needs a Wi-Fi connection needs to be on the same Wi-Fi connection as said PS five so it’s not Bluetooth or any other type of connection like the Wii U had. the second thing being that the new PlayStation slims are not the same price. The disc one is the same price. The digital one is $50 more.

PS5 is the first system I have had no real motivation to buy. There’s just Spider-Man games. I think the industry direction is becoming more mobile with portable pcs systems like steam deck… for exclusives I’m preferring the game offerings of gamepass and switch in this current gen.

I honestly have no plans on buying a PS5 because my PS4 Pro is still getting plenty of good use. I'll look to get a PS5 Slim at some point when they drop below $300 maybe in a year or two.

I finally got a PS5 a few days ago. I literally just walked into a walmart at 10pm and got one, and I'm loving it so far! for me a PS5 is nothing but a win because I never had a PS4 so I have ALL of those games to play plus the new stuff, it's great

As for a comment, well I know it's not a popular sentiment but I am not a huge PlayStation fan. I had a PS1 back in the day. I used to like all kinds of games for it, but as an adult? Really not much that holds up as an adult. I guess Parasite Eve 8/10, Grandia 7.5/10, and to a lesser extent Final Fantasy VII which is about a 7/10 but has aged pretty badly. I don't think a lot of the games hold up graphically, or in terms of gameplay. PlayStation 2? I was never a fan because I favoured the Dreamcast, so no nostalgia from me, the Dreamcast ports were good. The only exclusive that I can think of was Silent Hill 2 (8.5/10) which I consider to be the best survival horror game of all time. But aside from that, ports and multiplats was almost nothing I enjoyed. The 7th gen was another lacklustre gen for me. The only PS3 game I liked was Journey. PS4 had some great games like Nier Automata, Rez Infinite, and some games I've wanted to try like Witcher 3 and Persona 5 Royal but you'll notice there are only a handful of games that I've liked over the years (and you can play most of them on Switch now anyway). Honestly, for me since the death of Sega from the console market, it's mostly been Nintendo that's provided the majority of content I enjoy, with only a few PlayStation (e.g. Silent Hill 2, Nier Automata) and Xbox (e.g. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future) games that have become my favourite. The PS5 is expensive and has almost no games I want to play ditto for Xbox. A physical Switch, along with Dreamcast, and Saturn emulation is more than enough for me.
