PS5 Liquid Metal - What The Heck Is It & How To Replace It - The PS5 uses a cooling solution known as liquid metal. In this video I'll be explaining what liquid metal is, why the PS5 uses it (instead of thermal paste), and what the main difference is between liquid metal and thermal paste. I'll also be showing you how to replace the liquid metal in a PS5.

The (likely nickel) coating on the copper heatsink is just that, a coating. It protects the heatsink from degradation from the gallium in the TIM, and so when spreading it back to the centre, it's probably not recommended to use a metal pick or screwdriver unless you've very careful. A graze is enough to allow permeability into the copper. Better to use a plastic or Teflon tool, in my opinion. TronicsFix was clearly very gentle using the dull curve of the pick and dragged at the surface tension of the fluid when he did it, he's not an idiot, but hearing "screwdriver" made me wince a bit. Especially when this channel shows us the kind of chimps that try to fix these things sometimes.

10:00 Thats the result of LM reacting with the silicon, you can remove that layer by doing die lapping but it won't make any difference in thermals.
@devilmikey00
@devilmikey00 3 жыл бұрын
My primary concern with LM is longevity. I've never used it personally but what I understand it needs to be reapplied every 1-2 years because it dries out quicker than a good thermal paste does. So I do wonder if in 2-3 years time we won't have a bunch of overheating PS5's to worry about.

My concern with the liquid metal is its longevity. Specifically the longevity of the materials required to make it not ruin the rest of the system, since as that foam pad and its adhesive ages I don't know if it's going to slowly let the liquid metal leak.

Is there any chance of the liquid metal causing issues during operation if you keep the system vertical? Seems like horizontal would be the ideal way to use the ps5 based on the viscosity of the liquid metal? Maybe I’m being paranoid.

I'm not a fan of liquid metal as a tim, back in the day when I was chasing the 3ghz single core overclock I tried it out and it was bloody fiddly and too much would squirt out and too little and that was another chip fried. I am a fan of peltier's and a decent waterblock which uses electricity to create a super cold side to the cpu and using its thermal pump action channels heat to be dumped by your waterblock, in fact they were so efficient you had to protect the components from condensation and frosting, the hotter the cpu, the more condensation and cooling.
