Thanks, Ian. Part of my childhood there was a DOE facility in the area. It was kind of like "the Area 51 we have at home." As many of our parents worked there, the security was one of the things we were in awe of as children. Adults too, lol. It was a vast territory in the middle of nowhere, and fenced off with signs all along, warning you in legalese on your life and freedom to stay out. We were also in awe of the mystifyingly thorough surveillance. Armed men would appear in moments if you even approached the fence. You couldn't get within miles of anything the Soviets or anyone else would want to have or know. Security was well armed and well equipped with gear, vehicles, helicopters...they were not messing around!

The area is a lot busier nowadays so the security footing has shifted a little, but I have little doubt it's every bit as vigilant as it used to be.... just more willing to sit and watch rather than intercept.

Just a heads up for anyone curious. Those mags are not actually made by H&R/PSA. H&R sells two different types of mags for their 9mm rifles on their website. One is a cheaper $25 mag that is trash, and the ones you see in this vid with the two different sized strengthening ribs at the top of the mags (one long rib and one short one) are the more expensive versions of the mags ($35 each). They come in both 32 and 20-round versions and they are both made by Metalform. Metalform is the OEM manufacturer for the OG Colt 9mm magazines. The Colt-branded 9mm mags are twice the price of the H&R-branded magazines and they are literally the exact same mags made by the exact same company. The only difference is one says "Colt" on the baseplate and costs over $70 and the two mags you see in this video are $35 each and they say "H&R" on the baseplate. So you are paying TWICE the price just to have the name "Colt" on your 9mm mag baseplate if you buy "official" Colt mags over these H&R mags.

Once you got one of the 9mm SMGs to work, they were actually pretty good weapons. We had three of them at my department and they were light, controllable, and had the same controls as our AR-15s and M-4s. We eventually went to MP5s, but the Colts were fine. The MP5 has a very deserved reputation, and I would take one of those over probably any other SMG, but I really enjoyed the Colts as well. One of the three had some problems and we basically took it and stoned the crap out of the bolt carrier and assorted contact points, and it worked 100 percent after that.

The tooling and programming to make a clone correct handguard and folding front sight, and to give us a 20-round Metalform mag and cool “pistol brace”, makes the price palatable. I built one of these about 10 years ago using the top of the line components for everything. I love it, but without even having shot a MP5, I'm pretty confident in saying they are much better guns. The curved magazine, factory muzzle device, roller delay, and dedicated mag well makes it much better. Colt beats the MP5 on modularity and accessories back in the day though. And your note of the spring spring is spot on lol. Glad to see PSA went with a dedicated magwell, that's a significant improvement over adapters, even if they went with a permanent 2 piece pinned one like the original. Would love to shoot one of these full auto to experience it. I've shot a 10.5" Colt SMG full auto and had a 10.5" upper built at one point. The difference those 3" make in changing the sound, flash, and shooting feel is very surprising. If you want more details on what the cloners had at the time, happy to discuss.

First of all im from germany and never shot a gun (which will hopefully change soon when going to the range). But i love ians vids and im very interested in guns and military since my childhood. What i want to say is give me ALL the details you have. I dont get some things you said like with the upper. The lingo you sometimes use is pretty difficult to acquire for me. And what in hell is a magwell?
@matthewmucci910712 күн бұрын
@Aochso the magwell is where the magazine is inserted. Because the magazine on a 9mm conversion is shorter or not as long compared to a 5.56mm m16/ar15 magazine, colt put a steel block in the front and back of the magwell to take up the extra space you would have with putting the smaller 9mm magazine into a receiver originally intended for the longer 5.56mm cartridge. Think of it like a spacer or a bushing, this part is commonly called the magwell adapter because it adapts the smaller magazine to the larger receiver. When executed well, like on a factory colt gun it doesn't cause problems, unless there is a manufacturing defect of some sort. On old school builds cheap or poorly made magwell adapters seemed to be what always caused everyone problems. Upper refers to the upper receiver, the part of a m16/ar15 platform gun that houses the bolt and barrel and is removable from the lower receiver. The lower receiver is the part where the trigger, grip, and magazine go. In the USA, the lower receiver is the legally regulated part of the firearm and what is legally considered the firearm. Enjoy your first outing to the range!

I just imagine the colt manager coming in to the workshop with a visible huge hangover: "You remember my buddy from the Department of Energy. Yesterday at the party, he finally gave in and took the bribe and we got the contract. " - "Buddy! Read! It is about machine pistols! We don't make them!" - "Yeah. Whatever. Just quickly make something that works somehow."

Nuclear security tends not to mess around. Here in the UK where famously the police don't go routinely armed, one exception is the Civil Nuclear Constabulary. Incidentally that would make a good name for a punk band. Wikipedia says they get the usual spread of Glocks, MP5s, G36s, and some LMT-made AR-15s.

@DjDolHaus868 күн бұрын
I remember coming across the nuclear constabulary while driving home one day. They were moving something nuclear in a convoy of military trucks with a huge escort of police and military personnel. I had a nice chat with the guy manning the roadblock and while he obviously wouldn't tell me what they were up to he was happy to tell me about the CNC. I watched the convoy go past, waited 10 minutes and then they packed up and let me through.

When I was in the 160th SOAG (A) in the 80’s, our A company MH6 Little Birds trained with the DOE response teams. The little bird could be deployed out of the back of a Semi truck in less than five minutes. Was in a different company so I never went on those TDYs, so I can’t say I ever saw one of the DOE SMG. In fact I have never seen a picture of one in the field.

Unless you've been naughty or are under 18 you aren't restricted to air guns. If you stick to rimfire you can have semi autos, if you don't mind straight pull, lever action or bolt action you can have centrefire too.

I got my first firearms licence in 1962 and have seen several changes to firearms law in 1968, 1988( following Michael Ryan's rampage in Hungerford) when we lost self loading centrefire rifles, and finally 1997 when we lost our handguns after the "Great Dunblane Coverup". Can't wait to see what our current government has in store for law abiding sportsmen.
