I think some of this negligence could be attributed to us getting used to the American diesels of this era. It could be that they don't know that a lot of these Japanese diesels have more sensitive fuel and oil systems, not some IDI that will go a couple 100k miles running only vegetable oil.

I never understood those people out there that deviate from what the owners manual says to use. For my 98 Surf diesel, I did use aftermarket filters but they were designed for my specific engine. I had it for 14 years and only had to change the batteries a few times and the timing belt. Ran like a champ. I regret getting rid of it. :(

Donut media put extra oil I’m their engines for JDMs saying they need less oil due to lower temps in Japan. Berrima diesel was saying some models should have a transmition and maybe an engine oil cooler added when up North , or towing/ sand.

Japan gets hot! Like 40c plus. And humid. And mountainous. No need to put extra in, just what the dipstick says. The engines that need more oil get bigger sumps, like the 1HZ, nearly 10 litres because of its inherent commercial use. Berima is spot on. They also came out and challenged Toyota about putting 0W30 in the 200 Series which it was burning away in months and causing catalytic converter issues. In our hot climates they should have been running 10W40 which most people switched to after warranty expired.
