Great video, fun start to try to identify the shot! I guessed the first two correct, but thought the third would be a drop!

Pilley's technique was massively underrated. He just had perfect form, a big reason why he hit the ball so hard! Also this youtube channel is perfect for a squash nut like myself, absolutely loving the content.

great teaching technique to show the 3 different scenarios side by side. left scenario: > the ball was further away from pilley; > the sufficiently low risk shots are either a boast or a floater down the line; > the rationale is because the ball is not near enough to pilley's body; therefore not according him sufficient control and rotation to execute a drop or a cross court drive which requires an exaggerated follow thru. middle scenario: > the ball is nearer to pilley according him more control as he doesnt need to stretch out so much; > he therefore has many more shot options here... a drop, a straight drive, a straight floater/lob, a cross court drive or a cross court floater/lob. right scenario: > same as in the middle scenario.

Great video! I am trying to learn how to do this in my game. I called 2 out of 3, got the middle one wrong. I thought that was going to be a cross court drive.

From left to right : trickle boast, deep cross, long line. Okay, 2 out of 3 :p I've watched a lot of Pilley, so I was dead sure of the trickle and the long line. For the trickle, somehow the spacing, the shoulder and the timing of the front foot 'feels' like he's going to hit the trickle. The one on the right panel, from the spacing again, looks like he's holding to push it deep. Only the one in the middle panel did I have no idea what he would play. Now, this is from the armchair obviously. Inside the court, without this camera angle, I probably wouldn't have left the T, or pulled a hamstring or something.. :)

U cleared out how to train for deception .. but on the other side , when the player train to read deception from his opponent in a prepaired routine, i think this will be a tough one because it exert a huge mental and physical stress ..
@ARProformance

What you've mentioned is definitely difficult Mohamed. There are several ways to do it. Some more taxing than others. The common one players use (especially juniors) is to play a back wall lob as a serve, and then the player in the front has the choice to hit anywhere (trying to be as deceptive as possible), while the server/retriever attempts to pick up the ball. This is physically and mentally taxing (requires a lot of movement and mental focus). This is one way. Given that we will be working together, I will share other suggestions with you as well if you're interested! 💪 - Ahad

Do you think some countries club and lower level coaching needs to move focus away from repetitive drills of playing along the side walls? Egypt seems to produce players with high levels of variance and deception. What do their coaches do that manages to both nail the basics of straight drives etc but also promote the more imaginative/intelligent side of play?

Thanks for your question Rob. In my opinion the balance, timing and focus is critical. For example young kids must learn fundamentals while having fun (playing games) - in order to minimize chances of a low ceiling as they age. Players that have a decent foundation should emphasize game play, creativity, volleying etc a lot more. The other factor is personality. Some people have a jovial, light hearted, playful personality and play as such. Others are more structured, rational etc, and play as such. Great question with no single correct answer. Developing a strong relationship with each player and building upon existing character and strengths is probably the most effective strategy, although difficult to achieve given the required time, effort, and many intangible factors :) - Ahad

@@ARProformance the thing I like from your videos is the way you brake them down you make them easy to comprehend. My take away is something that I have been trying to implement into my game for a while is to try and make the build up to each shot look the same so you can do anything with the ball and your opponent has no idea what your doing.
