As being an alumni of this choir I will say the boys have never been as loud or as good as many cathedrals in england. But I do think it the placement of the speekers which are always at the back behind the tenors so that is why they are overpowering the boys

oh - that organ into!! Fabulous. What lungs (and of mastery using those organ resources intelligently). A wondrous work.

@choirboyfromhell1 this is true, but even then it is a beautiful coral

@pertencoacristo Oh agreed, and there could have always been an issue with the placement of the microphones.

Great Anthem, but some of the gents (a tenor particularly) are overwhelming the boys...

I think the organ and boys section of the choir sound GREAT!!!! The Men section, however, sound like there overdoing it. I do know that this song has portions that has vibrato, but NOT the whole song through! It becomes very distracting to listen to, and harder to listen to the WORDS... which is the main goal of singing, to send out the message. At 1:23 it's like being releaving after hear too much voice from the men, and off balances the boys.

PoppaSmurph67 I think the problem is the placement of the mics. In early recordings, such as this one, the fidelity is really bad. If you listen to them now it is very, very different.

This is not a balance comment. From a technical perspective, the vibrato rate of the men of this choir indicate serious breathing problems (such as, they don't know how to breathe properly and they are not breathing). It is interesting that whoever chose these paid singers did/does not know how to recognize, diagnose, and fix this. As as result their vocal sound is atrocious and ruined this rendering of one of the finest anthems of the Anglican repertoire.

Blud, this is simply not true. Yes I agree tenors have vibrato but that is because that is what they do. I am a former chorister of Washington national cathedral and Mr. McCarthy does overemphasize the use of vibrato but it is natural so I got no clue what you are talking about. Breathing problems?? U are making this up my friend.
