Ive been keeping Ts for about 3 years now, had a couple arboreals that I've loved, I decided I'm finally ready to try raising a psalmopoeus. Just picked up a P victori, and I'm also considering picking up a P irminia in the future if I'm able to establish my P victori. I'm a bit nervous since the fastest Ts I've raised so far are the GBB and D diamentinensis, but I've heard these are good to prepare for the speed of Psalmopoeus, so I'm just trying to not get too psyched out. Thank you so much for the species specific guides and rehouse demonstrations. After watching the psalmopoeus videos, I think I'll fall in love with this genus in the end, I've found I really enjoy ones with a bit of an attitude and a good feeding response, plus I'm really enjoying arboreals, so that's why I decided to take the plunge into the psalmopoeus genus. Maybe in 3 more years I'll be ready for my first pokie!

Beautiful critter! I have an H. maculata that thinks she's fossorial. I gave her a nice big piece of bark and lots of moss to build into her web, and she's dug a hole in the 2" of dirt I put in. I'm gonna have to rehouse her into something with more substrate...😆 I know that's normal for slings, but she's a good 4" leg span.

Lovely T, Tom! When I first started in the hobby due to some confusion I was offered one of these. I did some quick research and didn't think being one of my first spider as they were so much faster than the usual NW. Ended up taking my G. pulchripes. But now after a few years under my belt I would reconsider this spider. I also recently saw a newer acrylic enclosure that would be nice using with terrestrial species. I think the name I'd Aohuada and it's 2.5 gal size and there a quite a few more reasonablely priced. Thought I'd let you know.

Great vid Tom my pulcher did the same thing when I rehoused her recently just balled up and refused to move , I ended up having to dig her out too . The only other t I have that behaves like that is my sazimai she balls up and refuses to move too when its rehousing time. Always makes me feel bad as it makes them look so helpless. Coincidentally, my P irminia girl just laid her eggs a few weeks back, I’m gonna be pulling the sac this week! It’s my first time doing any breeding so I’m nervous but also very excited to do more! (Assuming everything goes smoothly!!)

I’ve found that this species becomes MUCH bolder if housed in such a way that most of the enclosure is out of sight.

Hey Tom! Awesome video as always, your spider is absolutely stunning! I love when the fossorials just kinda hunker down and cover their eyes like "If I can't see you, you can't see me!" All these little spider behaviours are just the most endearing things ever. I have a quick question about fossorial-arboreal spiders- i.e. spiders that start as fossorial and end arboreal as adults (Psalmopoeus, Lampropelma, Taps, Omothymus, etc.) I have a little 1.5" P. irminia sling who burrowed like a good little Psalmopoeus but after her last moult she's demolished her web sock and filled in her burrow and spends all her time on the side of the enclosure or on her cork bark like a full arboreal. She's webbed up the side of the enclosure as well. I've also caught her lounging in one of her plastic flowers on multiple occasions. She flips over on her back in the petals of the flower and just chills there. The first time I saw it I was terrified cause she had just moulted a week ago and hadn't eaten yet so she definitely wasn't ready to moult yet. I gave in and poked her gently with a paintbrush and she just kicked it away with her back leg and went back to lounging upside down like she was in a hammock. It's definitely the weirdest behaviour I've ever seen from a spider and she does it regularly. I really don't have an explanation for why she's doing this other than she just likes it. In my experience, Psalmos usually act almost completely fossorially until around 3", but this little weirdo is acting like a full arboreal almost like an Avic. She doesn't seem uncomfortable or unsettled, she doesn't bolt at all, just slowly walks away or sits there like a pet rock when I disturb the enclosure. She's a quirky little lady. I was just wondering if you'd ever seen small(ish) fossorial-arboreal slings display their arboreal tendencies at a much smaller size? Also have you ever seen any of your tarantulas just... hang out upside down? Again she's perfectly fine, eating well, looking beautiful, it was just a very weird unusual behaviour that I'd never experienced before. I honestly think she's just doing it for "fun" (as much as a tarantula can have "fun") and that just makes it so endearing to me! I know they can drastically change their temperament and behaviour after moulting but this was a little extreme. She's always been a weirdo, she actually will come out of her web and wait for food when I go to feed her and she seems completely fearless but she's also one of the most gentle spiders I have (she is only 1.5" though so I am prepared for this to change.) And yes, I do have pictures and video of this! Some of my favourite footage to show off to people since it's so quirky and adorable! I've become a big fan of this species since I got my cambridgei. I was so intimidated at first but she hasn't been too bad. I now have a victorii, irminia and a pulcher that are slings. They are beautiful and definitely fun to feed lol my biggest has shot up out of the enclosure to grab hers before.

Great video Tom 😀 👍 I won a P irminia sling last year, and it is definitely one of the shy ones. Recently, about 3 weeks ago, moulted again, and I am reaaly hoping I have a female. Saw 'her' out just yesterday for the first time since she kicked her moult out, the chevrons are her abdomen are popping quite a nice shade of orange now ❤ I keep her in an XL arboreal critter keeper already, she doesn't seem to have any problems hunting prey down, in fact I gave her a couple of wax moths before she went into premoult for the first time, she came out from her web in the corkbark so fast and caught the first one I didn't have chance to get a proper look at her 😂

As for the tattoo, after batting around which species to get and in what style, I decided to go the traditional route and just do something colorful and made up! haha All the tattoos on my left forearm represent something special to me (my wife, my kids, spiders, etc.) so I went with something more simple and readable.

Hi Tom I finally got one a couple weeks ago. It's shy a reclusive but early morning it's out and sitting on the enclosure door. When I bought it is 3". It's in a small exotera enclosure. Have you ever tried zoomed reptisoil for your turantulas. So far for substrate it seems to hold moisture very well. I finally got a Darth maul sling at a reptile expo. Definitely recommend this the p.imrina for a beginner and Trinidad Chevron as well. At the size you have at that size super worms work as well. I keep mine at 75 degrees with all my turantulas.

I wondered what a chevron was. Turns out a chevron is a pattern of angled lines that are generally found on airport runways. Chevron is actually referring to the pattern on the abdomen, not on the legs.

Hiya Tom gorgeous spider love the p irminias I've got 3 myself I've got an old adult female who's 9 years old and like yours she's almost completely black apart from the orange chevrons on her legs but her abdomen is almost jet black and I've got a juvenile female and a juvenile male I raised 1 up last year from a 2cm sling too mature male in just under a year and I sold him off for breeding and that's where my 2 juveniles came from I had 2 off his slings so it's nice that I've got a couple off his baby's and are now raising them up they're such a gorgeous species I've got quite a few psalmopoeus species it's just a shame that there so elusive apart from my p Cambridgei she out all the time but my p reduncus I can't remember the last time I saw her shes the most recluse off all my psalmopoeus species. 👍

@@TomsBigSpiders hiya Tom I've got a young adult female p reduncus she's about 3 years old and out off all my psalmopoeus species she's the most reclusive she never comes out at all I've got her in a lovely 20x20x30 exo terra nano and she never comes out at all she just sits in her web tube alls I see is the tips off her legs sticking out when she's hungry I've tried different things with her feeding schedule see if that helps her too come out more and it doesn't she's hidden away constantly my 2 juvenile p irminias are out all the time so is my old adult female p irminia and so is my sub adult female psalmopoeus cambridgei they're all out all the time apart from my p reduncus what's your most reclusive psalmopoeus?? Hi Tom. I dont have one now but have a big weakness for the Ven Tiger. Love the black and orange and am also a huge Philadelphia Flyers fan. Question for you. Wouldnt it be better to make friends with these terrors by having clear cages versus opaque? We know their vision isnt good,and if they see us,over time wouldnt that make them calmer and not as excitable? Im thinking of the Warren Zevon song now,"Excitable spider they all said ". I would think the opaque cage added to their poor eyesight would make them want to rape and kill you,as the song says. LOL......as my Swedish grandma would say " Yust a thought, Randy".

Hahaha That will do it! Generally speaking, I've found that the more exposed they feel, the more skittish they can be. They don't seem to tame down like domestic animals either. I've had specimens that are super calm turn defensive and skittish after molting. I've had ones that will sit out in the open for years that now bolt and hide when I get to close to the enclosures. I really hope that they don't want to rape and kill me, but... :)

My small juvie hasn't burrowed since it was 3/4 inch. And really it only burrowed into the starter burrow for like the first 2 weeks. Mine has always been arboreal. It's weird how Ts are each their own little person with own personality and traits. Mine is very very shy. So, I hope she'll be more docile.

Hey Tom! Awesome species! I got 3 2cm slings 8 months ago. One turned out to be a male, another one is a gorgeous female, and the third one is still unsexed. They are 12cm big already, which is an incredible fast growth rate. I'm planning to move my female into a bigger and nicer enclosure. Would you say that 20x20x30 is ok for this species or I better go for a 35cm tall enclosure?

Finally managed to get a Poecilotheria.hanumaviliasumica couldn't get more then that but I'm not complaining the pokie wall is taking shape added regalis, striata,hanumaviliasumaca, miranda, managed to get the rufilata paired tigrinawesseli and a metallica luckly she molted while the male was still semi fresh and he started his tapping n chasing her so maybe in few months will see a sack or 3 from these ladies but if not its all good just being able to raise them is the best ever thanks again Mr Moran for sharing the great tips n tricks definitely more then helpful ur a wealth of knowledge sir have a great day

@Nessa Smith Rundle well pokies can be very different let me tell ya some are quick to bite but mostly a very nervous species and hate bright lights I'm working on pairing some mine atm had vitatta and ornata last year and was happy af lol I usually get rid the babies either cheap or free to people mostly been friends so far had a couple people make a shipping lable and I've sent em some random slings or an adult female t and slings I just want y babies to be taken care of thats all and usually any cats I make from getting rid of em goes back into getting tanks n feeders or substrate what ever I need for them most my ts r on Instagram I don't post much on fb

I lost mine to what I assume was a bad molt. By the time I went to investigate the springtails had done a number on the carcass. So I’m not 100% sure what happened. After that last enclosure build I’m wanting some more arboreals. Might have to give it another go with these guys.

Strangest thing is they are supposed to have Sexual dimorphism when it comes to coloration as adult, but my mature male basically looks like a mature female, except of course much smaller and has the hooks. I honestly didn't realize it became a mature male till i saw the hooks one day, just has me confused since from most posts and pics i've seen they are supposed to be much more gray and fluffier.

Mine was so shy and would always hide. He matured out super early and was so tiny. He didn't live very long at all. Maybe 2 years if that.

I'm curious to know if you've noticed any color variations between different individuals? Mine has a very dark abdomen, so dark that you can't see the striping, just two tanish/orange spots at the base of her abdomen. I personally think she's gorgeous, but I'm still curious. EDIT: She's still a sub adult, about 3 years old.

I have! I've seen ones with bright orange on their abdomens and others that are almost jet black. There definitely seems to be variations between them!

It honestly depends on the temperatures they are kept at and the feeding schedule. I think that my male matured out at around 17 months.

@@TomsBigSpiders Actually I've got 3 irminias and 2 of them ran for it during rehousing. As soon as I opened the lid of their cricket boxes they were gone. In hindsight I think it was quite funny. They were just small and catching them was easy. The 2 Poecilotherias I recently bought otoh were very calm and very easy to move.

Tom I know you say in the podcasts that you came into the Ts with a solid fear, would you say you still have a little bit of that, or do you think it's more of a healthy fear you have now. No disrespect at all, your great, but I sense sometimes you have a bit of your original fear still. Just curious about human behavior at times, I know these irminia can be sketchy, but in general just curious how you feel about your past fears vs now.

I would say that I have no fear of spiders as animals, but I don't want to be bitten or have one bolt up my arm and make it difficult for Billie, who would have to catch it. (the same way that I wouldn't want to be bitten by any other animal). I WOULD say that I have the utmost respect for them, and try not to do anything that would result in an escape or bite. Hopefully, that makes sense. haha

@Tom Moran I handle mine but not regularly, i think 20 or so years ago i tested it with some OBTs, obviously if something happened it was on me and the news would not get out, but they were fine. I have no time for bad bites or hurt and lost animals now though so handling only certain species now, and not often. Carefully. Im one of those that feels the bond to something idk spiritual or nature or whatever it is when I hold one, though I know the spider is not thinking that haha. anyways yeah i feel i trust myself, but when other ppl handle im like ugh no lol. When people let little kids hold them I wanna barf. No way that kids gonna take a bite and chill. I feel ya though. I have two of these one is a smal 2 1/2 inch and my other just molted out male at 5 inches hoping my smaller one turns out female and gets some size before the male is no longer viable to breed. Tom if your interested I could send you my male on a breeding loan I’d hate for him to not reproduce

My irminia just molted again... its probably 4.5-5" and still not matured out male at a year and 4 months old so im thinking female? Idk obviously not a sure way of knowing but im hopeful, yet.

I would guess female at that point, but sometimes you get some larger males.

You honestly can't lose with either genus. If you're worried about the stronger Poecilotheria venom, start with a less potent (but potentially more skittish) Psalmopeous species.

16.9 Oz water bottles with bottom cut off are life savers nit the cherry kind either lol haha but definitely work for smaller species or slings and another thing about the irminia I've noticed sometimes the males have a very faded orange to there pattern where as females are quite bright its only noticeable if u have em to compare next to each other its not big time color difference but u can see it sometimes usually after molts u can see it better as females b4 molt kinda dull up b4 hand

Definitely a fun species to raise some can be bipolar but ull have that hahah the one I raised up 2 years ago had 1 nice sack and a partial second they almost always double clutch which is great if ur trying to get some slings really males can be quite large if ya get a good blood line like the cambridgeis sometimes females irminia will kill the male after pairing but they will cohabitate for some time if u can find some good corkbark logs they will actually live in one and web it up nicely if they can get dirt or moss in there I stuck the one I had n the dirt and she webbed the top closed lol and made her small entrance to get n and out and when hungry she would hang her feets out the entrance lol she was a shy spider but would be out towards evening

Mine is a maniac lol. It doesn't like the paintbrush and it is definitely one of those roll around the ground catching food type. My Victori is much more chill. My Rufilata is a sweetheart compared to these 2 lol
