1 O praise the Lord, for it is a good thing to sing praises | unto . our | God : yea, a joyful and pleasant | thing it | is . to be | thankful. 2 The Lord doth | build . up Je- | rusalem : and gather to- | gether . the | outcasts . of | Israel. 3 He healeth those that are | broken . in | heart : and giveth | medicine . to | heal their | sickness. 4 He telleth the | number . of the | stars : and | calleth . them | all . by their | names. 5 Great is our Lord, and | great . is his | power : yea, | and his | wisdom . is | infinite. 6 The Lord setteth | up the | meek : and bringeth the un- | godly | down . to the | ground. 7 O sing unto the | Lord with | thanksgiving : sing praises upon the | harp | unto . our | God: 8 Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth | rain . for the | earth : and maketh the grass to grow upon the mountains, and | herb . for the | use of | men; 9 Who giveth fodder | unto . the | cattle : and feedeth the young | ravens . that | call up- | on him. 10 He hath no pleasure in the | strength . of an | horse : neither de- | lighteth . he in | any . man’s | legs. 11 But the Lord’s delight is in | them that | fear him : and | put their | trust . in his | mercy. 12 Praise the Lord, O Je- | rusalem : praise | thy | God, O | Sion. 13 For he hath made fast the | bars . of thy | gates : and hath | blessed thy | children . with- | in thee. 14 He maketh | peace . in thy | borders : and filleth thee | with the | flour of | wheat. 15 He sendeth forth his com- | mandments . upon | earth : and his | word . runneth | very | swiftly. 16 He giveth | snow like | wool : and scattereth the | hoar- | frost like | ashes. 17 He casteth forth his | ice like | morsels : who is | able . to a- | bide his | frost? 18 He sendeth out his | word, and | melteth them : he bloweth with his | wind . and the | waters | flow. 19 He showeth his | word . unto | Jacob : his statutes and | ordin-ances | unto | Israel. 20 He hath not dealt so with | any | nation : neither have the | heathen | knowledge . of his | laws. GLORIA 1 O praise the | Lord of | heaven : praise | him | in the | height. 2 Praise him, all ye | angels . of | his : praise | him, | all his | hosts. 3 Praise him, | sun and | moon : praise him, | all ye | stars and | light. 4 Praise him, | all ye | heavens : and ye waters that | are a- | bove the | heavens. 5 Let them praise the | Name . of the | Lord : for he spake the word, and they were made * he commanded, | and they | were cre- | ated. 6 He hath made them fast for | ever . and | ever : he hath given them a | law . which shall | not be | broken. 7 Praise the | Lord up-on | earth : ye | dragons . and | all | deeps; 8 Fire and hail, | snow and | vapours : wind and | storm, ful- | filling . his | word; 9 Mountains and | all | hills : fruitful | trees and | all | cedars; 10 Beasts and | all | cattle : worms | and | feath-ered | fowls; 11 Kings of the earth, and | all | people : princes, and | all | judges . of the | world; 12 Young men and maidens, old men and children, praise the | Name . of the | Lord : for his Name only is excellent, and his | praise a-bove | heaven and | earth. 13 He shall exalt the horn of his people, all his | saints shall | praise him : even the children of Israel, even the | people . that | serveth | him. GLORIA 1 O sing unto the Lord a | new | song : let the congre- | gation . of | saints | praise him. 2 Let Israel rejoice in | him that | made him : and let the children of Sion be | joyful | in their | King. 3 Let them praise his | Name . in the | dance : let them sing praises unto | him with | tabret . and | harp. 4 For the Lord hath | pleasure . in his | people : and | helpeth . the | meek- | hearted. 5 Let the saints be | joyful . with | glory : let them re- | joice | in their | beds. 6 Let the praises of God be | in their | mouth : and a two-edged | sword | in their | hands. 7 To be a- | venged . of the | heathen : and | to re- | buke the | people; 8 To bind their | kings in | chains : and their | nobles . with | links of | iron; 9 That they may be avenged of them; | as . it is | written : Such | honour . have | all his | saints. GLORIA 1 O praise | God in . his | holiness : praise him in the | firma-ment | of his | power. 2 Praise him in his | no-ble | acts : praise him ac- | cording . to his | excel-lent | greatness. 3 Praise him in the | sound of . the | trumpet : praise him up- | on the | lute and | harp. 4 Praise him in the | cymbals . and | dances : praise him up- | on the | strings and | pipe. 5 Praise him upon the | well-tuned | cymbals : praise him up- | on the | loud | cymbals. 6 Let every thing | that hath | breath : praise | - - | - the | Lord. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places, yea I have a goodly heritage. Thank GOD for the Anglican Church, of which I'm proud and blessed to be a member. May she continue to march on, and not be prevailed upon by the gates of hell.

Some people seem surprised by the standard of performance but this is a real, "live" recording of an ordinary Thursday evening in 1970. This was more or less the standard at every service.

I like most Anglican chant but these are particularly good ones. It was only when I moved abroad that I realised what an unregarded treasure this tradition is in England.
@ArchivesofSound9 жыл бұрын
Londonfogey That's a nice way of putting it.

***** It's very English isn't it? Polite, formal and polished on the surface, but with an undercurrent of restrained emotion that 'lies too deep for tears' as Wordsworth put it.
@ArchivesofSound9 жыл бұрын
Londonfogey Also very nicely put! It would be fascinating to hear a recording of Anglican chant from the time of the Restoration - or even the Victorian era. Would it have been done the same?
@Londonfogey9 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not very musical, but I suppose most Restoration chants would have been similar to Tallis, Byrd etc. I think double chanting (the type in this video) came later, in the eighteenth century. What fascinates me more is music which we have absolutely no record of, such as ancient Hebrew or Roman music; the sound of which can be only guessed at.
@ArchivesofSound9 жыл бұрын
+Londonfogey Tallis did write some single chants himself, although the earliest double chants appear around 1700. As to ancient Roman music, the general consensus is that it would probably have mirrored ancient Greek music, of which several examples of notation have been "deciphered"; elsewhere on KZbin, you can find reconstructed performances, e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3XJqIiHjaecoqc.

The Anglicans can teach us Roman Catholics about vernacular singing, and this is an offering above excellence itself. And besides, the pointed psalms fill this expatriate with an incense-laced nostalgia :)

Wonderful! This is the era when I and my oldest friend (I'm now 65...) would make the journey to 'Gillers Cathers' (as we nicknamed it) to listen to Baz Rose and his superb choir. We could well have been in this congregation. Happy days and marvellous memories!! Thanks again for uploading these iconic recordings.

I was looking for a setting of Psalm 31 (11-16 & 18) when I landed on this playlist. Thanks for the many uploads and the pointing on each one! I grew up in St. George’s Cathedral Choir (Perth, Western Australia) under the direction of Simon Lawford, and some of these are quite familiar. If you have a recording of Psalm 31 that you could please send me in the direction of that would be excellent.
@ArchivesofSound7 ай бұрын
At evensong we sang only the psalms appointed for Evening Prayer. Unfortunately Psalm 31 is appointed for Morning Prayer.

Thanks for helping so many people, especially Anglicans, to worship! Is it possible for you to consider posting all 150 palms in sequence? That would be a great aid to private and pubic Christian devotion all over the world. In return I would pray for special blessings on you during my private Mattins and Evensong devotions! Please, consider this!!
@ArchivesofSound8 жыл бұрын
+Anne Francis Elizabeth We answered this query a couple of weeks ago. We can't do what you ask because we simply don't have recordings of all 150 Psalms. In England, cathedral choirs mostly sing Evensong and therefore only ever sing the psalms appointed for Evening Prayer for the various days of the month, i.e. approx half of the total number. The only exceptions might be the occasional psalms that fall in the Morning Prayer calendar but are also "proper" psalms for a High Day - but we don't have all 150 psalms, either way.

would know where to find the sheet music to these pieces??
@ArchivesofSound9 жыл бұрын
***** It is possible to find scans of old chant books online, and some of the chants here may have been included in the various chant books one can purchase via Amazon and other outlets. An excellent resource for tracking down chant sources is anglicanchant.nl, where you can reference chants via a composer index. It will require some detective work on your part, though!
@vincentpaniccia9 жыл бұрын
***** Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I tried to find them with little avail. If you wouldn't mind taking the time out of your day could you help me find some of the sheet music? I probably just am searching the site wrong, but my goodness the musics absolutely gorgeous!
