For me, Thanos gave a humble vibe off in Infinity War. He portrayed his actions as a service such as that of a janitor: not as the cleanest or most noble deed, but as one that needed to be done. In Endgame, his goal was to control the Universe and make it his own. His backstory of the destruction his home are essentially thrown away, which make him less understandable and less relatable to his cause.

@@rasya_hooman5359 Additionally he was basically "playing" Infinity War with "God Mode" (read Infinity Gauntlet) ON. So, of course he has time to seem humble and reasonable. He KNOWS he is going to win, so he can engage people and be nice to them and he also feels quite bad that so many have to be sacrificed for his goals to succeed. But that false humility ONLY exists when he is assured of his final victory even if it leads to his death. But in Endgame he realises that his final victory can be undone and that brings his God Complex out to the forefront. Faced with the possibility to failure he is willing to throw out the board and start a new game. And now we get how Thanos is really like when he faces a true obstacle to his grand vision.

And while that's problematic on some level, this more unhinged, straight evil murderboi was a good solution to a final challange, and making sure, the original, more nuanced Thanos don't steal the show again from the Avangers as this is their finale... da Thanos event was Infinity War.

I kinda would have preferred they did something like the comic sequel to infinity war. The Avenegrs catch a massive wave of energy from the infinity gems that's impossible to miss. Track it to thanos' planet where the entire place is a smoldering ruin, and thanos is beat to shit with his snapping arm ripped clean off. He warns them about this crazy guy called the Magus who came out of nowhere and proceeded to wreck his shit all while ranting about unmaking reality itself. SO they gotta team up with he guy who destroyed half the universe to try and track down a guy who wants to finish the job, in a race to collect a number of mcguffins.

Because that's not what the movie was about. It was not about the ultimate confrontation and struggling with villains. It was about overcoming despair, depression and hopelessness. I think it's quite interesting because you can tell that they wrote Infinity War with such a clear vision but didn't really have much of a clue what would happen after it. I feel like they had this inspiration to write an amazing story where "The Bad Guy Wins" but after he does, they looked at it and probably tossed up about 10 million ideas of how to conclude the saga in a way that ties up everything in a neat little bow - and while I think they DID succeed in a sense, you can tell that Endgame was much much more difficult for them to write because they didn't really know how to conclude the story.

We knew they were gonna come back, it was just a matter of how, with time travel being the most likely of the scenarios. After the first 30 minutes, its just fan service, until the last 30 minutes which is supposed to be the end of the Infinity saga. Its a fun time because its fan service, its not a stand a lone movie like the majority of the MCU movies. Its all the movies wrapped in one, and its supposed to be a live letter to MCU fans. I personally just can’t look at this movie though and judge it for the plot holes that are there for that reason. Its supposed to be stupid and fun

I know he was full of vengeance for his plan not going his way but "I will shred this universe down to it's last atom" seemed so cliche and tacked on that it took away all the depth and buildup he had in Infinity war and made him look like a catchphrase spouting one dimensional Saturday morning cartoon villain, especially since he saw himself as his own hero in Infinity War weighed with the burden of feeling like the sole being capable of truly saving the universe. Perhaps a better motive of vengeance using the stones could have been snapping away all resources instead. That would create parallels with what happened to his own home planet on Titan as well as force people to see his worldview on what's best for the universe once they're dying and desperate. That would've still created tension and be consistent with his own lifelong goal. Just my two cents.

The most predominant part of his character development in IW - the experience of sacrificing Gamora - hadn't occurred for the 2014 Thanos, and IIRC the film is cut as if he wasn't able to discover it by the time the final battle begins (he doesn't treat Gamora with the expectation of upcoming betrayal that he does with regards to Nebula, even though this would make more sense if he had fully analyzed Nebula's data). His tone was already noticeably different at the beginning of IW compared to its end. Endgame takes the earlier Thanos, and instead gives him the opposite experience of an vicarious unearned success that he seems to be being cheated out of, plus the information to see that people didn't ultimately accept his 'salvation' of them in the way he had previously expected. I think this situation makes his differing characterization in Endgame quite plausible in the context of the story, even if he isn't as interesting a character in his own right, or perhaps as satisfying an opponent for the characters hurt in IW to face off against.

Honestly killing thanos in the first hour of the movie for shock value was a big mistake. U get rid of the big baddie like he was nothing only to real replace him with younger and out of character version of himself? Why strip him of all the character development and menacingly interactions from infinity war. It just doesn’t feel personal anymore and it would. Make more sense for him to be angry and want to change his plans but they should’ve kept him alive for the final battle and not use any armies but his full strength and powers showing that not a single avenger or character is capable of Thanos alone. Having characters like scarlet witch captain marvel and a few normal women overpower him just elongates thanos as a threat.

Yes. Iron Man arc was brilliant and best part. It was a huge 3 hour epic capping off the 11 years of "phase IV" - so of course there was a lot of good, AND they played off of a lot of emotions - so people get emotionally attached and won't look at critically or logically. Outside of Iron Man and some moments here and there, they didn't have to poop on certain characters or create the inconsistencies within this story and the universe they created. Also the $2.8B mark (oh what a success) covers all the missteps when they could have easily smashed past 3B. That's also why so many people like PSA here only wanted to see once; not so much because it's over, but because deep down, call it a gut feeling or subconscious level, one really knows there's inconsistencies and let-downs but don't want to notice it or face them. The more you see it, the more you notice (well, potentially if you're open to it and the 'criticisms').

@@umamagei Thanos says that line first after bragging he destroyed the stones with the stones (lol). Which soon after they go ahead and undo. Very evitable. The reason Thanos wins in IW is because the Avengers were not working together. Very evitable. There were so many close calls and honestly dumb luck involved it all rings very hollow. There is no actual inevitability here. So, regarding your argument, I'm not criticizing the use of the quote from the perspective of Thanos using a fancy word because he wants to sound cool. I'm criticizing it from the perspective of the writers using a fancy word because they want their script to sound cool, but actually lack the substance to make it have a deeper meaning. Contrast this to Smith's reason of using this quote, which admittedly isn't so great in that movie, but it at least hints at themes of premeditation, repeating cycles, etc. At the very least it calls back to the idea that Smith is tied to Neo, so Neo (the hero's) existence demands the existence of Smith as a sort of cosmic counterweight. Again, I'm not about to get into an deep argument about this, but the point is made. tl;dr It's about the deeper thematic resonance and allegory rather than "does this throwaway line meet the bare minimum threshold of acceptability".

The lack of threat in time travel is an issue, so are the other points made. My biggest issue is that they kill Thanos in the beginning. Having a past Thanos show up just felt like having cake and eating it too. It felt like a hollow victory. And add the fact that they used the stone already really just deflates the tension. Additionally, I think they really weakened Thor too. In Ragnarok he was unstoppable. Then in Infiity War they weakened him, until he got Storm Bringer. To which he was tearing up ships (Just like Captain Marvel did!!!). Not only does he have 1 hammer, but he has 2 and he is still a chump. What the heck!
@Astraeus..
@Astraeus.. 4 жыл бұрын
In Ragnarok he was unstoppable.... Sure. Except the part where his big sis crushed his hammer and he ran away. And then the part where a drunk Valkyrie managed to knock him out and capture him. Or the part where somehow electric shocks actually incapacitate him several times. And then the part where he decides on round 2 with big sis and she rips his fu@$ing eye out. And of course the only reason Hela doesn't kill him is because Loki revives Surtur who then destroys Asgard, which kills Hela because her power/life is directly tied to the planet... But yea, other than all that he was 100% unstoppable.....

The whole reason this movie fell flat compared to infinity war was that the antagonist was gone for the first 3/4th's of the movie and the Avengers got the stones unchallenged. They really should have had boss fights in those quests. Like having Ebony maw go after one group. Proxima Midnight go after the other. Cull Obsidian go after the next and the big guy go after another with Gamora and Nebula chasing one more. The final battle was pretty good, but the fact that we had to sit through a 2 hour and 30 minute slog with no Thanos is kind of lame. It's also pretty shitty how they make Thanos go from layered 3-dimensional bastard who can be understood with and seen as a broken man with PTSD and a warped view of reality at best or seen as a wise man who can be agreed with at worse. Now he just devolved to Doomsday villain who deserves to get dusted.

Has Nebs steal some of their time travel tech, then he travels to the only person he can trust... himself. He travels to OUR Thanos, post snap, moments before the Avengers show up to kill him. Old timeline Thanos fills in 'original' Thanos (the one from Infinity War) and he sees that the crazy bastards might actually succeed in UNDOING his magnum opus. I will admit there was definitely super hero fatigue growing a little bit before Infinity War, but people like myself held on because they were hoping for a worthy ending, we didn't get it. 12:40 basically what happens in The Hobbit. You feel like the main objective is defeating the dragon. But it gets defeated rather quickly and not by the heros, no by a different character. After the dragon is dead you still have to watch through the conflict between the heroes and the elves and men and then you have the battle of the five armies. This is what Peter Jackson actively tried to change by having the weird pale orc hunt them from the beginning. In the books it works, in a movie not so much. 15:30 How great would it have been to have Thanos hit Thor in the chest with his sword and Thor with his last bit of strength snapping the gauntlet saying "YOU should have gone for the head". Snapping Thanos and Co away and everyone else back. How great would it have been to see Thanos being in despair about what he did and then fighting his self from the past who thinks he is weak and failed. This would have been great. But I'd still prefer the Thor one.

I think it was more, Thanos needed the gauntlet to be able to use the stones without injuring himself. The first time Thanos snapped, he was fine but the gauntlet was damaged. The second time he used the stones, to reduce them to atoms, he was left crippled. Iron Man made a gauntlet that left Hulk crippled with the first use, and he was the strongest of them to actually be able to survive. Then Iron Man used the stones and it killed him. Bit of a difference I think.

And also Thanos's decision of destroying the gems after he does the snap seems very retarded and out of character IMO. He should have been smart enough to realize that the universe's population would sooner or later regain its former numbers, and thus he would have to reset it again and again with the gauntlet in some sort of cycle (like the Reapers from Mass Effect somewhat do for example) in order to keep the "balance". Besides, although he deprived the heroes of the chance of reverting the snap by getting rid of the gems in his timeline, he very conveniently allowed to become himself an easy prey. All that just look like very lazy and dumb writing.

For me I just never really felt that deep of an emotional tension since I couldn't help thinking about how they were always coming back, and then they announce all their movies regardless of IWs ending. The biggest thing that felt inconsistent to me throughout both was the stones supposed power level. I've never read the comics but just based on the mcu with a quote from GoTG they state how Ronan could wipe out all life on the planet if he makes it to the surface using just the one stone. Why then when in possession of any number of the stones, especially when that same one was the first Thanos acquired did he never seem as powerful as someone capable instantly killing a planet? Infinity War is better in that it's definitely a more enjoyable rewatch, but even in that whole fight he has I believe 4 at point and they just never felt fully utilized in either movie. They had built up this whole purpose of collecting all the stones being 'the snap' which felt like it undermined and neglected of all their innate power previously established.

Thanos felt like a different character because he was: past-Thanos hadn't gone through all of the experiences that had made IW-Thanos such an interesting and complex character. In that sense, I do applaud Marvel for taking a risk and doing something pretty out there compared to conventional story telling. That said, it falls completely flat. Imagine a story where instead of confronting the bad guy head on, the heroes travel back in time and kill him as a baby. It'd be anticlimactic and terribly un-heroic. Or better yet, imagine a story where they don't even confront baby-bad, they just kill some random person because they know it'll alter the timeline and prevent the bad guy from becoming evil. The problem is that this solution completely side-steps the central conflict. It is a creative dodge, I'll grant that, but it's still unsatisfying because what we want and expect as an audience is for the central conflict to be resolved directly with some sort of direct confrontation.

It was just alright. I mean, that was true of infinity war for me as well, but Endgame was even more "alright". We all know why the media rated it highly, but audiences rated it way higher than I expected based on the quality. Either I am jaded, or cinemagoers have lowered their standards over the past 15 years. Probably the former? But for me the funeral/memorial for Tony Stark at the end encapsulates a major problem with the film; it is a long, overly drawn out, "emotional" moment that tries to show the upset faces of every hero and side character in existence.

I thought it was weird Black Widow didn't come back when they returned the Soul Stone. I had a discussion with my friend about it. He told me it was about sacrifice, but I said the wording was important. A soul for the gem. That could be interpreted both ways, and in both cases you'd be sacrificing something for something else. While your point about the snap taking place before the final battle might be somewhat valid, though the final battle did happen pretty much immediately after the snap, and Thanos said he would redo it to include all of them, which you did cover, Endgame nevertheless was a VERY satisfying finale to 10 years of movies. And the final battle, far from being boring or something nobody wanted or liked, was, on the contrary, absolutely amazing, incredible, and emotionally satisfying. Why? Because, even though the main point was to undo the snap, the secondary point followed closely behind which was unfinished business with Thanos. Now you make the point that they couldn't have known about past Thanos coming for them, and this is certainly true. But when they saw a healthy fully armored Thanos ready for a fight, they saw that as their _real_ revenge. Why? Because their Thanos, the one that they killed earlier, was too weak to fight them and their victory over him felt hollow. With past Thanos they had to work at it, and it felt immensely satisfying for them and us to defeat him. So, yeah, Endgame had two main plot points, undo the snap and defeat, I mean really defeat, Thanos.

I think the thing that kept me back most from really "investing" in the final fight was the fact that, in basically every sense, this Thanos was a weaker antagonist than the previous movie's version in every way. Philosophy? It's a lot easier to sympathies with someone who's trying to fix something than someone that wants to wipe the slate clean. Conviction? Infinity Thanos was pro-active and got the stones himself, step by difficult step. Endgame Thanos can't be bothered to sit up for minutes at a time. Power? Endgame Thanos has his conquering army, which admittedly was cool to see in its full force. But Infinity Thanos was attacking with an army WHILE equipped with multiple functional Infinity Stones. We'd already seen him at peak fighting prowess, and Endgame's just couldn't match that no matter how big his army was. Presence? Infinity War was basically a documentary following Thanos's journey for the stones with the heroes doing everything in their power to stop him by any means. Endgame's Thanos doesn't even really impact the plot until over halfway through, and while he brings his A game at the end, the Power argument already shows why he doesn't leave as big an impression. Really the odds were just stacked against Endgame Thanos. We'd already seen him utilized to his maximum potential in Infinity War, so putting a less charismatic or impressive version of him at the end of the followup without any building tension was doomed to not be as impressive.

firstly, in an interview one of the writers expressed how they believe they did redeem thor, that's what his whole mother scene was, restoring his self-belief and so on, so that they arguably (definitely, in my opinion) failed to do so wasn't because Disney stepped in with some "feminist" agenda. Secondly, the majority of phase 4 movies are male-lead and they were clearly positioning spidey to be the next figurehead at the time, though obviously as his position is still testy they'll move away from that. Disney will include a "girl power"/ "gosh we're progressive" scene every now and then because that lukewarm, tacid support for such issues sells to the mostly centrist/ liberal audience, and that's it. Disney, the corporation, is not progressive or left wing or feminist, it's plainly capitalist and not much else. It'll do what it takes for good press, without straying too far from mainstream political opinion, so that it can make more money. If anything it probably steps in to reel in political ideas that go "too far" for mainstream audiences. I realise that this is a bit long of a comment to make in response to what is clearly a joke, but if there's even the slightest chance that you actually believe that Disney actively promotes an explicitly feminist agenda, you're wrong. Disney is a corporation, and it'd be pro-anything if it would sell.

I feel like Thanos went from being a somewhat understandable yet morally misaligned villain. the good kind that truly believes what he's doing is for the greater good, all the while acknowledging the burden and emotional toll it brings with it, and instead changed him into a "I will kill you, and I will enjoy it" generic villain. It was as if they realized they made him too personable in the first one and chose to dumb down his dialog to be more generically >Insert Mermaid Man "EVILLLLLLLL"

+Jeffery Deadstein Thanos seemed like an entirely different character in Endgame, and it took me out of it. Marvel reverted back to their villain problem after proving that they could have a fleshed out, complex one in Infinity War.

@@rusheena Same to a T, i loved infinity war for the mere fact that I felt sympathy for Thanos and in turn was slightly understanding to his goal+respectful towards his dedication. He wasn't two dimensional and in turn had sympathetic points which is important for a villain. Endgame, he flipped like a pancake. To the point that he even states "i'm going to enjoy wiping your entire planet personally" Even tho previously he made it clear that while he was a genocidal maniac he didn't take pleasure from what he did, seeing it a necessary evil and that he was the only one with a strong enough will to burden that brand. Such a shame.

I saw Infinity War twice in the theater and 4 times at home within a few weeks of it coming out on BluRay. I saw End Game once in the theater and it has been in the wrapper since coming out on BluRay. Infinity War is the conquest of Thanos and the coordinated efforts of the heroes attempting to prevent the “inevitable.” End Game isn’t about anyone. There is no villain. They should have introduced Galactus and had Thanos realize the snap was the wrong choice. That Galactus was the balance in the universe. That the snap sped up the consumption of Galactus because he requires life force, and thus had to eat twice as many planets to satisfy his hunger. (Continuation) they could have kept Thanos as a half-abled badass in the beginning of the movie and having known he made a mistake, because he is the only one that knows Galactus is coming because he became Eternity, talked with the Living Tribunal, got the Gauntlet taken away from him while his body was empty, and you have the Thor, Cap, Iron Man scene against Thanos when he goes back into his body. You get all the things and set up a new huge Villain, and then introduce Adam Warlock at the end of the film.

I think that Endgame is like a one experience movie, you just see it again for one scene, the final battle But with Infinity War you love every scene The time travel scene, to me, was sooo boring and some of the jokes didn’t land on me

Imagine if, in the Lord of the Rings, after destroying the ring, instead of concluding it there they went all the way back to the Shire only to find Saruman in charge and had to have another fight to defeat him again. That would just be silly.
