With PS Audio investing so heavily in loudspeaker research and development will they ever take some of that work and make a line of powered subwoofers? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com...
I have finished my memoir! You can go read it now: www.amazon.com... It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.
I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to www.paulmcgowa... and add your name to the list of interested readers. There's an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

The definition of a sub woofer has changed over the years. Originally the term was for a true sub woofer that handled frequencies only below about 40 Hz an extended to the infra sonic to near 10 Hz. They were normally 15-18 inch drivers with their own amplifier. Today it simply means a bass speaker with its own amplifier and covers the low end below 150- 200 Hz. The so called sub woofer may not even cover 20 Hz or even 30 Hz sometimes. Check carefully before you buy.

I was constantly advised by a friend who makes subs for a living that I really needed one so eventually I borrowed one. It rolled off below 40 Hz, 10 Hz higher than my transmission line floor-standers. On-line signal generators and smart phone apps like Sound Meter combined with a DSP like the Dayton DSP-408 make much more sense to me.
@swinde
@swinde 5 жыл бұрын
My standard Acoustic Research AR-3a speakers are specified at -3 Db at 30 Hz. A "sub woofer" should be covering about 10 Hz to 40 Hz to complement these speakers. Many modern so-called sub woofers do not even reproduce 30 Hz, much less anything lower.

@@swinde Then there's the question of how much musical information there is in the range below 50 Hz. The answer is not much for most people most of the time. I like organ music and the pedal notes get down there, but I don't listen to it all that often, especially since SWMBO detests pipe organ. I come across a system using a sub from time to time and think that they are mostly muddying the waters so to speak. Then there's the issue of room size. A 20 Hz soundwave is 17 metres long (56 feet) at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. One _could_ shorten that by pressurising the listening room to several atmospheres, but WAF becomes problematic when you start proposing such measures ;-)
@swinde
@swinde 5 жыл бұрын
True, the lowest note on a Piano is about 27.5 Hz and a string bass bottoms out at about 40 Hz. True pipe organ can be as low as 16 Hz or even 8 Hz according to google.

yes, we need a serious subwoofer company making sound quality first priority. its so hard to find just a simple sealed subwoofer box. they all make compromises to sound quality to look good on paper and have more output. its like PA subwoofer is in the homes. quality subwoofers works for any use, home theatre have no quality standards and ara pollution the stereo hifi.

I have a Yamaha wireless sub but it sounds terrible unless wired, sort of muffled and strange. Interference from wifi signals messes up the communication to the sub. There is so much wireless gear around today with the potential for issues that I am not convinced anything should be wireless now unless its absolutely necessary.

I have the same problem with my wifi bluray player. I rent and stream movies through it, but every time I make popcorn in the microwave I lose the signal. It's kind of annoying. That damn microwave is probably killing me with radiation, if the butter doesn't do it first. But you are right. I wouldn't have wifi speakers.

To me, for classical music lovers like me, the ultimate low bass timbre reproduction is that the double bass in the Ditters von Ditterdorf’s will not sound like a ball park Hammond organ playing the 7th Inning Stretch tune or the Mexican Hat Dance. That reproduction improvement would be enough to encourage Gary Karr to make recordings.

They conservatively source a fixed qty. based upon expected demand. That way they don't have to ride out the period of declining sales before an evolved replacement becomes available. They are not a speaker company and want to stay in business while having something to offer as a one stop solution to buyers wanting convenience.

@True WingChun I know someone who has a pair of VAF DC-X transmission line speakers same as I possess. He went to his local cinema one day and the theatre-owner was dismayed by his speakers failing. My friend lived near the cinema and offered the use of his DC-Xs so the show could go on. Afterward several of the patrons congratulated the cinema-owner on his improved sound system. The speakers that broke cost several times what the VAF DC-Xs cost. I think that two channels of high quality is enough for most of us. I'm about as impressed by today's multi-channel sound as I was with Quadraphonic back in the 1970s.

Wouldn't it be easier to license re-badging of a really great sub, such as the REL product? They've done a fine job and is there truly an advantage to basically starting over? Of course, you'd need to have the right to continue manufacturing REL if they should quit and go fishing.

@jaydy71 5 жыл бұрын
@@cigarobsession Yes that's great, but they'd still be hooked up to power wouldn't they? So I'm not sure what the big deal is about the input cable (which is usually much more easily manageable than power cables). And wireless connections come with their own potential issues.
@duroxkilo

it's really no trouble these days... when was the last time you've heard of a blue-tooth speaker disconnecting from the smartphone? it used to happen a lot, they used to have very limited ranges, etc. not anymore... there are a few solutions out there with great reviews, I wouldn't mind a wireless option on a sub..
@jaydy71
@jaydy71 5 жыл бұрын
@@duroxkilo Outright disconnecting is one thing, but it takes a lot before it actually gets there. Preventing disconnections usually means more buffering (thus phase issues). EDIT: I mean at this channel there's often talk about the most subtle things that are probably not perceptible anyway (like digital clock jitter issues, expensive power cables, power regenerators, exotic signal cables etc), and now we seem to be throwing that all out of the window and say "hey ho, wireless is totally on the table". I don't understand that.
@duroxkilo
@duroxkilo 5 жыл бұрын
@@jaydy71 a ok, i understand what you mean now... not to mention that the sub signal would have to be digitized and if it doesn't use 4million bits @ infinite kHz some people would hear/sense that :}

Subwoofers???? LMAOOOOO!!!!!! They are having the must difficult time making one pair of speakers. It's taking way too long and the price goes up after every video. I'll stick with REL subs. Here is my analogy of PS Audio. They were a very fine dining Steakhouse. Now they're turning into a Golden Corral.
