Johns Hopkins Researcher Mary Cosimano shares promising results from clinical trials of guided psilocybin sessions being utilized in the treatment of addiction, depression, and cancer/end-of-life. The impressive results offer much hope for an effective treatment to heal “hearts and minds.” One of Mary’s key observations is the importance of love and connection - it seems, love is literally part of the answer. Mary Cosimano, MSW, has been working with the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research since 2000 when they began research with psilocybin. In her role as Director of Guide/Facilitator Services she is responsible for training and supervising Session Facilitators. She has served as Session Facilitator and research coordinator involved with all the psilocybin studies and has conducted over 450 study sessions. In addition to her work with the psilocybin studies, she has worked with the Club Drug Studies including Salvia Divinorum and Dextromethorphan. She taught individual and group meditation to breast cancer patients in a Johns Hopkins research study, and taught at California Institute to Integral Studies (CIIS) for their Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research program. In 2003 she started and has maintained a meditation group for employees in her department. She also has 15 years of experience with direct patient care as a hospice volunteer. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@@DV-zv4ox Not to burst anyone's bubble here but take it from someone who's got some experience with these things: what you feel is very, *very* dependent on where you are, how you feel and how you're feeling before you start the experience. And even then it can literally change 180'' by simply walking into another room for instance. You'll be aware of this unless you take 'heroic' (don't, unless supervised by a professional) dosages, but it's an insane thing to experience. Also, you'll probably find that besides being very susceptive to outside stimuli influencing your experience, your own thinking influences it instantly as well. Having said that, my psilocybin experiences are easily some of the most unique and memorable things I've ever experienced - even though I can't put half of it into words properly. This may sound weird, but if you're familiar with the 'mindfulness' idea of acknowledging what you feel/hear/see, not judging that and then letting it go it can help whenever things take a weird/creepy/anxious turn.

5.5 grams of dried mushrooms. The most difficult, yet the most transformative and blissful experience of my life. I can't imagine a more powerful and life changing substance you can consume. most important thing to remember before the experience ; It gives what you need, and not what you want.

@baberraza4231
@baberraza4231 3 жыл бұрын
@@eaburl It is indeed a heroic dose. You have to work up to this level. Your entire identity dies in this, and linear time doesn't exist in this realm. When the old 'you' die, it screams in frightened agony.. if you survive the panic, a new 'you' is born, pure and untethered from all the distractions of this world. The serene and blissful afterglow will last for days, and you're changed forever. I have done it once, and I have no need to do it again.

@@baberraza4231 It's cool that it worked so well for you but I just want to add that not everyone will have an intense experience like that with 5.5 grams. My friend once had a little more than 7 dried grams of very potent shrooms and while it was pretty strong, He did not experience ego death. So he prefers other tools to get there because He doesn't like the body load when increasing the dosage of mushrooms above 5g.

@@FritzVonR I agree, absolutely. experiences are different, because there are variables we don't fully understand. When I used 3 or 4grams, I had endless thought loops which often was more frustrating than beneficial. 5.5g is a breakthrough dose to get past all of that.

I'd been struggling with PTSD for 6 years, white-knuckling life and running around in circles in my brain trying to sort through what happened to me. Mushrooms completely transformed my outlook on life itself, on who I am, and gave me the outlet to feel pure bliss, safety, and love. It only took a couple of experiences for my PTSD symptoms to go into complete remission.

Psychedelics are a good starting point for understanding love, consciousness, presence and connection to infinity, but it won't keep you there permanently. It requires daily upkeep to maintain. Self reflective practices such as meditation and mindfulness training are the future for a healthy society in touch with these principles. Looking forward to growing that future together.

@Paul Gauthier Yes, the mushrooms do help for the long term but the amount they help fades if you don't integrate the revelations from the experience. This is why integration is important. Mushrooms do not heal your life. They teach you how to heal your own life and show you that it is possible. Highly recommend.

Pedro. I'm going to offer some unasked-for advice. Setting intentions is very important. East Forrest's Music for Mushrooms album is a great guide on your journey. The mushroom medicine is about going inward. Set your intentions, imbed your intention into the melody of the album (it repeats throughout the album), journey in a dark space (you can use a blindfold), and stay present in yourself for the full 5 hour journey. Start the album as soon as you ingest your medicine and sit with it for your entire journey. Much love.

@@opedromagico It might also take 2 weeks to a month for the effects of the SNRIs to clear out of your system, and it has always been considered dangerous to mix psychs and SSRIs because of a feared risk of seratonin syndrome. The theory being that with SSRIs (and presumably also SNRIs) that the brain actually down-regulates its seratonin receptors because of the increased availability of seratonin. Then the psychedelics have fewer binding sites and have less of an effect. I am not knowledgeable enough to provide any direct advice other than to research possible interactions.

I saw time and space bend into one. It was the deepest and most profound experience in my life. And that includes the birth of my son a year later to whom I am deeply connected, who I love with an intensity and a peace I cannot begin to explain. How did I integrate it? I am not sure, it just happened. Life just became okay the way it was. Even when things were not okay by any standard. I am sure that others have entirely different experiences and it kind of feels like describing the colour blue to someone who has been blind since birth. Would I repeat it? Only if I really felt that I had to, for sure. But I am not sure there really is any way for me to disconnect from the experience even as the memory of it fades. It's been so profound to rediscover each other with the assistance of psilocybin. The reason couples drift has a lot to do with ego. When you remove the ego, you can truly hear and understand your partner. It's an incredible closeness that you can't achieve any other way.

Thank you for the tip on Dr. Leo Buscaglia and his book, “Love.” I love that Dr. Buscaglia was so moved by a student's suicide that he started a noncredit class at USC he called Love 1A to contemplate human disconnectedness and the meaning of life. I will spare you my suicide survivor story (I can’t talk about it except I miss him everyday) but I wish psychedelic medicine was available to doctors when traditional methods fail a suffering patient.

Shrooms and ego death were terrifying unprepared, but the relief in my depression and anxiety lasted nearly 5 years until a car accident knocked everything out of wack. I still needed assistance with therapy and antidepressants,but maybe things would have been different if I were able to take the psilocybin in a safe, clinical environment with guides on a regular basis. I have truly never experienced better relief and I have been in therapy for 12+ years having tried individual and group counselling on top of just under 15 different medications (some together and some on their own.) This underlying message of humanity being one and all is love was strongly present during my trip and stuck around for a couple of years personally. I took more than I should have under the advice of a careless plug and had a "bad" trip. Be safe if experimenting and start at 0.5g, friends!!! 💚

It's all happening at the same time. Our painful family disconnect from first, covid, and now Q-anon. A breathtaking book I picked up and started reading, called Kitchen Table Wisdom, about connection. And now the promise of healing through this miracle of psychedelics. I'm hurting, but opening up to the possibility of real healing at the same time. Feeling vulnerable but hopeful.

I totally understand the concept that all we have is now. It’s good to live in the moment. Beware, however, because the truth is we have tomorrow to think about. Although it is possible that we can go at any second. The reality is most of us will rise and shine tomorrow. It can be a disaster thinking all we have is now because now goes on for ever. Be safe live in the now but remember love is surrender, and you know that for sure.

Fundamentally what Mary is discussing here is "altered state therapy", which almost always involves the activation of endogenous DMT. This takes many forms: breath work, hypnotherapy (especially natal regression), tantra, psychedelic assisted therapy, kundalini (both practice and spontaneous), sensory deprivation, and sufi dance to name a few. I agree that it is most effective with the guidance of an experienced person. Traditionally this has been a shaman, yogi or yoga teacher master hypnotherapist, doula, or specific coach of some kind (typically not social workers). Now that mainstream establishment medicine has gotten involved there is a big push to discredit these traditional "authorities" and claim the "clinically scientific" high ground. Some medical professionals are more respectful in their approach, such as Dr. Zack Bush, and Dr. Bruce Lipton. This presentation seems to support the "Compass Pathways" position of "proprietary patents" and "clinical protocols and standards", as in "cha-ching" $$$

I suggest reading up on Spiral Dynamics.... or Ken Wilber's Integral Theory (to distinguish between states and stages of consciousness). What you describe, I believe would come from what is called the magical-animistic stage. Mushrooms have the potential to induce a higher (deeper) state experience than the stage of development you are currently experiencing life from. From second tier stages you may appreciate that each stage has some validity (the mushroom is communicating with us vs the psilocybin molecule is inducing a neuronal effect).

If you think that she is trying to control the experience, I can assure you, you are wrong. I have had the privilege to have had sessions with Mary and she is absolutely unconditional in her acceptance of what you as the patient needs. The feeling of safety and assurance that I would be okay with her by my side was integral to me working through extremely deep, repressed memories that would have had me in a closet crying in fear. Instead, with her experience and steady voice -- she speaks much like this during session but with even more love and gentleness -- I was able to productively face what I was too afraid to face, and release it.

The 1960's had much of this opening up going on with various psychedelics and the desire to live in intentional community - it was never studied seriously as it is being studied now - there was so much negativity about drugs and hippies from establishment concerns that the psychological helps and changes were nearly entirely dismissed - and there was a lot of drug abuse and bad elements that joined the counter-culture movement that marred the good things that were happening - I'm glad to hear this work is being done - I wonder though, if there are no strong community ties to return to after treatment, will the positive changes last?

Let me qualify this by saying that no matter where or how the veil is lifted it is a necessary & good step. That said, the ruthless pursuit of of short-term self interests (aka greed) is negatively impacting our shared world in a powerful and significant way. Many of our major institutions are failing and going to collapse because of our false belief we can take more than we give. Those failed institutions include academia and medical industry. Mary mentions a $17 million grant in the same breath as setting up our failing institutions as the gate keepers for this medicine. She may not realize it but these are related. I wouldn’t be surprised if the $17 million is coming from Big Pharma. Don’t get me wrong, this is very exciting news but I urge you to question the “sales” pitch🙏🦋🙏

So many ancient cultures made use of psychedelic substances, but the religions in our modern culture do not accept it and mostly shun it. Thanks to professionals, like Mary Cosimano, many people are waking up to this valuable natural resource for mental health and overall well being. When you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts immediately shift your attention to your breath and follow it, thinking of the word rising as you inhale and falling as you exhale. Give yourself all the time in the world to stay there. Your thoughts are not you. You don’t have to entertain them, you can actively change it.
