I can say with certainty as someone who has beaten multiple Crash Games multiple times and gotten past P.E.A.R.L that Psilosybil isn’t just hard for linear platforming newcomers but for the purists as well. As well as that, your pointer that Ham Dass should probably receive a 2nd checkpoint past the third phase is a feeling that’s mutual, Ham Dass kicked my ass and I fear that a majority of players may not bother trying to soldier through the tough final phases. I really enjoyed your video on the game! I’ve been following it’s dev for a while so it was fun to play it at launch and just as fun to see ppl gush about it, it deserves the love it’s getting. I really enjoyed your coverage especially on the game as well, so I’m happy to give a subscription :)

Thank you ! I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one who had trouble with Ham Dass because at some point through the writing process of this script I was gonna remove that part and blame it just on my lack of experience. ; w ;

Mentioning Kya caused a flood of early 2000s platformer memories to rush back to me. Right up there with Vexx, Tak and Scaler in terms of B-grade platformers lol
@RippinToons8 ай бұрын
the fact you mention both kya and vexx is making my head spin. I could have sworn I was the only person on earth that played both of these games 😂
@BlueMagicite8 ай бұрын
I remember them in the context that they were a pretty common sight in both rental and retail stores during the big platformer boom and bust in the 2000s. often times they were the "bargain bin" games that would be slightly cheaper than the more popular options like ratchet and clank lol. What's kinda admirable about these games is that they're often the only non-license/franchise work in a studio's lineup, making them the only bit of original work that's unique to the studio's history

First off, love the game and what it means for indie platformers. It's wonderful to see so many "ancient" genres come back to life and I'm all for it. I also want to say that I love your content and wish that you keep doing videos like that. You don't have nearly as many subs as you should doing such great videos and you definitely deserve more!

I can smell the Crash Bandicoot in this game. So much love in things like death animations seem so simple but provide such an important motivation tool for getting to the next new death animation. This is a great video. Now I have to check out this and Zera.

Ah so cool to see videos about this game! Instant subscribe from me. I have so many thoughts about this game actually, I think you're right that it walks the line between frustrating and compelling, mostly because the obstacles are very clear! You can always see what's going on and what's possible. With such clear cut obstacles you always feel like you can give it one more try. Being able to understand that you messed up, or that you had a chance to play better is NECESSARY with difficult games. Frustration starts when players don't understand what they're doing wrong. The difficulty as a designer then is to make sure that you have difficult obstacles, that are very visible and understandable, but don't give away the solution to them immediately. It's a fine line between "understandable and clear" and "easy". PsiloSybil tends to use complicated platform movements, obstacle orbits, and spike timings to throw you off, all the puzzle pieces are there but its tough to tell EXACTLY when you need to jump or wait. It takes trial and error, but every try you are developing your understanding of the game and trying new ideas. It's never as simple as "oh now that I know the kaizo block is there I just won't jump". That's a big trap with difficult games as well, if something is completely concealed, but has a completely effortless solution to avoid once you KNOW its there, it feels like a "trial and error game". This was pretty unorganized and honestly I have a ton more I could praise about this games mechanical design, but I'll cut it off now. Great video!
@maraganger2 жыл бұрын
100% agree with you. There was never a moment where I put down the controller and asked myself why I was playing. It was very refreshing to not have that feeling of "alright, what do I do now ?" with PsiloSybil.

You're right about the Ham Dass boss fight, it was a major roadblock for me and I struggled a lot to get through the third and final phases of that fight. However I do think that one checkpoint throughout the fight is more than enough, think of it as a "casual filter" for the rest of the game lol. Anyway it's up to the developer's artistic vision whether to make the fight easier or just keep it as is. Either way I'll still keep loving this game.
@maraganger2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I totally get what you mean. I think maybe I was a little uncharitable during that video haha, cause replaying it recently and Ham Dass really wasn't as bad as I made it out to be. Hard ? Sure, but like you said, defo acts as a filter for people who probably wouldn't fuck with the rest of the game. The new stages though, absolute masterpieces.

Looks awesome and i used to love playing Crash Bandicoot back at my cousins house. Lol, im sure you noticed the trippy visuals arent for nothing, all the drug references (Psilosybin?) and alot of the characters being drugs (mushrooms) themselves lmao...
@sander3032 жыл бұрын
While I haven't played PsiloSybil yet, I can definitely tell it looks GREAT, and definitely comparable to the old Crash games. Although, with that being said, I can't help but think the character feels a bit too heavy when it comes to their jumps, but that may just be because I'm used to Crash's more floaty equivalent

Halfway through the game, on wizard giza specifically, I decided to give up on time trials. I had gold in every stage until then, but my thumbs hurt (playing on d-pad, feels easier to control) and I decided I don't have enough time, nor flexible enough thumbs, to 100% this game, but even then I have enjoyed this game a lot. Collectibles completion is more doable at least. I would say though that the super strict plattforming does feel a bit cheap to me sometimes, specially with moving platforms that also depend on the Y axis
