I know it has been 2 years since you uploaded this video, but I just wanted to thank you for reviewing this game, it has been the very first game along with Tak my brother and I have ever played and without them, perhaps I would never have gotten myself into game development. I a bit surprised you've never talked about the music though. I'm not a sound designer, but I can tell there's a lot of work put in each soundtrack, even though most of them are not memorable. They all stick to the visuals of their specific level and all have a variation of themselves during the arena battles, often pitched-down and sped up to make them feel more dynamic. Each boss battle has a very unique, badass soundtrack that keep me replaying them again and again to this day (espacially the Rattlecrab and the Iguana King's ones, they are worth buying the entire game by themselves). And about the arenas battles, I personally didn't mind them back in the day, but seeing them now with a completely different perspective, I can understand why some people find them boring. But I think their main purpose is to keep the player busy long enough to load the next section of the levels. Have you ever noticed how long the levels are ? I think some of them (eg. iridium or Altus) take about between 20-30 minutes to complete, if not more (providing you're not speedrunning of course). They couldn't keep the game running at 60 fps while continuously loading the next sections of the levels as the player progressed, so they needed a way to slow him down while doing so. Although it was a bit lazy, I think this was the best solution they could come up with to keep a fluid experience. Kinda like in Haven, where the player was constantly harassed by hords of ships while in space, forcing him to slow down to fight them and giving more time for the game to load the planet's textures. This is a pretty common way, even/mostly today, to load important chunks of detailed 3D models whitout massive framedrop issues, and thus ruining the immersion. That's all I had to say. And sorry if I made any english mistakes, I'm not a native-speaker.

What a beautiful looking game! I miss the days when games came with handbooks, too. It was one of life's simple pleasures to buy a new game and read the manual on the way home, getting a feel for what the game would be like and savouring the anticipation.

Okay, I'm sick in bed watching video after video on your channel making me feel all nostalgic and you keep pointing out all the tiny details that make these games special. I couldn't agree more about what you said of Scaler. I loved looking at game manuals as a kid for some reason, even when most of them were in English and I only spoke French. And yeah, Scaler's manual was one of the coolest things out there. I vaguely remember bringing it to school and redrawing everything in my notebook. Yes, this boss fight can go to hell. Turret sections are like escort missions and water levels, I really don't get why developers keep coming back to them.

He doesnt like Turret levels? Try the "Destroy Airship-Tanker at Drill-Platform"-Mission from Jak II, and do it on Hero-Mode (Hard Mode) I was going mad for literally WEEKS trying to finish that level on Hero Mode. An endless Barrage of enemies doing erratic movements, if (when) you die an absolutely relentless reset point that made you do the mission all over again *regardless* of your progress, a shitty field of view that had you wondering from where you were being shot at, it goes on for at least 15 minutes with no way to speed up the process, and to top it all off: your gun could overheat (how fun, right?). By the time i was able to finish on Hero Mode I only did it by memorizing the spawn points of *every single enemy*. literally one single mistake could ruin everything, since the enemies spawned on a schedule and it could get real crowded real soon if you didnt kill them quickly enough. You dont like turret levels? Give that one a try. You'll piss blood after 2 hours of torture.

+Leinad “leinadlink” link I never played this game as a kid. In fact I only first heard about it a couple of months ago.

NitroRad Welp, it looked like it to me. Nice vid dude! You should take care of your games though.

+NitroRad Great review of a decent game. 9:50 you went full Kazuhira Miller though and it was GLORIOUS! :D

Is that so bad though if were even the case? It would only be if he didn't admit his bias, which of course isn't the case. Typically nostalgia blind reviews do nothing but praise, this on the other hand was a very tame opinion.

Played this game a lot when I was younger, and I couldn’t find it for the longest time, so happy I did

I LOVE scaler and its truely one of the most beautiful games I've ever had the joy of playing. You nailed all the dips perfectly and described why I love it so much, with a few exceptions. I wish the world knew scaler more than it does because it truely deserves more than it received. I desperatley wish there was a sequel for this game, and I myself only have a couple complaints about it. Youre doing a great job my dude

am I the only one here who never liked this game? I beat it on the ps2 100% only once while blocking my nose and never touch it again. the ending hinted for a possibility of a sequel I remember when seen that I shouted *NOOO!*

I never played the game, but it doesn't look all that great to me. I wouldn't spend money on it.

I really remember playing this game allot to a friend's house or only almost the first two levels as they asked me not to save the data but I fairly enjoy it allot anyway and as I seen this video you made I wanted to view it immediately! ^^

Thank god someone else remembers this game! I used to love this game as a kid. I never really got too far in it, but i loved the character design and the environments.

This is why I like you more than other reviewers, you find lesser known shitty games. Good job :3

I used to love going through the Nintendo 64 game manuals as a kid, especially since I was usually very limited in my video game time. My favorite was Donkey Kong 64's manual. It had so many jokes and pictures of items and characters. It made me super hyped for the weekend to be able to play the game again. I want fun game manuals back! I miss them!

i really love the quality of your videos, i think you're oone of those gold youtubers that im happy to watch. My only criticism to most of the reviews is their pacing, or more the talking about 1 subject short, but then talking about something else longer + sidetracking, comparrision to other games are fun but if its repeated constantly it hurts the pace. The game looks fun, i love games where i dont need to play as human characters.

I can't believe I wasn't subscribed to you already. I love your videos and I love how you include a lot of lesser known platformers on your channel. I'm actually trying to do the same because they need some more recognition, even the mediocre titles. Growing up, I never heard of Scaler until I was about 15 I believe. I remember seeing a picture of the game on the Internet and I really wanted to get it but I procrastinated too much and missed out on it. I didn't get the game till about last year and I just started a few weeks ago (In fact, currently playing it right now lol). The game does have a strange feeling. Like it's good but something seems off. I can't really explain it. But anyway, awesome review, keep up the amazing work. :)

Oh man I remember Scaler! I really loved the game, I'm really glad you mentioned that flying boss too because I seriously could not get past it! I thought maybe I just sucked at the game because I was young.. but I'm glad to know it really is an awful boss fight 😂

this was the debut voice role of matthew mercer i think. also can’t believe i didn’t realize how many of my childhood games A2M/behaviour made. the ice age GBA game still lives rent free in my head.
