I would never have known that cloth covered wire over a very long period of time could carry DC on the cloth jacket. Great job Lyle.

That's why my favorite wire Fender ever used is in the very earliest 1966 to early 1969 amps. Same cloth outer covering with a small PVC inner insulator. It's also lacquered instead of waxed, like the wire on this amp. I think it makes the 1966 to 1969 amps some of the more reliable ones around. Not that it's a whole lot more, but it's something.

Amen, though I mostly see it on late ‘67s and ‘68s. In ‘69 they seem to have bought thin telephone surplus nonsense. Early Traynors have similarly lovely wire.

After you clean the cloth wire, wipe it down with a dryer sheet to eliminate static cling and give the amp that April Fresh tone...

Tht problem with cheap SPST slide switches like the one at 3:00 is that the mechanism is designed for up to 6 fixed-position contacts (note the empty bottom slots) that function as thrust-plate bearing surfaces for the sliding traveler-contacts underneath the plastic button, but this switch only has two fixed contacts. This makes for a wobbly, loose, electrically intermittent switch assembly. Better to use a DPST or DPDT switch and ignore, or parallel, the extra contacts. (BTW, McIntosh used similar switches in some of their old tuners and receivers as a bright/dim adjustment for the dial-lamp backlighting; they're usually intermittent and no amount of cleaning will help them, and in order to change the switch you have to drill out a pair of rivets.....😖)

Most excellent, you have a new subscriber. All of this amp signal cleanup makes me want to go through my entire circuit of my fender twin and refurbish everything in it now that I know what to look for. It's very satisfying to see a troubled amp forced back into working order.

Imagine doing this kind of work with one of those old, old school gigantic big-as-your-forearm, steam-driven, coal-fired, actually-made-of-iron soldering irons...... Come to think about it, that's exactly what my Hakko feels like on some jobs. Great work habits BTW.

These videos are the best, a true breakdown of how to make these amps great - Lyle have you ever thought about offering Zoom lessons on this stuff? I’d like your thoughts on some amps, and what you’d fix first.

It sounds so good already! Thanks for sharing this journey. Btw was the "Thud/umph" from switching stdby in/off fixed by replacing the actual switch and outputjack? Maybe it was covered in the livestream? I didn't find the time yet to watch.

I can never decide which black panel fender amp is my favorite, I’ve had a few different ones. I’ve gotten rid of most of the ones I’ve had, but still have a ‘66 SR.

Awesome video of this super reverb!!! Question: if you tried one, what do you think of those newer 68 custom Vibro champ reverbs? I’m just wondering because I’m looking for a nice small gigging amp. Hope to hear from you thanks and take care!

Hey Mr Psi....does that bottle type you use for the isopropyl have a name? i assume it doesn't dry up when in the bottle.
@PsionicAudio8 ай бұрын
Apparently it’s called a wash bottle. It has a narrow opening at a right angle. I’m sure it does evaporate, but so slowly I don’t notice any disappearing overnight. Lasts a long time (unless I use a lot).

Can the wires get microphonic as well? Like the grid wires or is that just a microphonic tube?
@PsionicAudio8 ай бұрын
Absolutely, but usually only grids.
@ThomasD668 ай бұрын
Condenser (as in a condenser microphone) is just an older term for a capacitor. So variation is capacitance (like when wires move in relation to each other) can indeed be microphonic. This is exactly why layout matters.

There is vintage good (e.g. old iron) and there is vintage bad (e.g. fiberboard and cloth wire.) When can/will we pass the point where the time and expense of washing cloth wire is deemed 'better' than replacing with a suitable, and longer lasting length of upgraded wire? Were these truly museum pieces I could possibly understand. Otherwise I do not. What is the sound of superstition? No offense to you, I know this is customer driven.
@PsionicAudio8 ай бұрын
I won’t hesitate to replace wire when needed. But this wire cleaned easily and is once again insulated. If I were building someone a similar amp I would not use fiberboard and cloth covered wire.
