Great video Jack, as always! You're one of the only guitarists I've seen that opts to play in the 2nd input on amps that offer that, and I prefer that input as well... something about the "sag" that input offers just feels right. I recently acquired a Fender Concert Reverb Amp in a 4x10 configuration, manufactured between 2001-2005, so (not) the Rivera Era. I think it's very similar to your Super Reverb in that it allows each guitar I play through it to shine in it's own light and sonic palette. It has a clean channel and a drive channel that I believe the Super-Sonic's drive channel is modelled after. One of the best amps I've ever owned! Loves ANY overdrive pedal I throw at it (has stock Fender-branded speakers). Keep up the good work Jack!

How are you liking your Concert reverb? I've been researching them but not a lot of information available on the Concert Reverb/pro. Tia

The Super Reverb is pretty much the ultimate jazz amp in my opinion, just a beautiful hifi clean that just makes any guitar sparkle. Great video Jack!
@JackFossett Жыл бұрын
It changed my opinion on what makes a great jazz tone - I used to think (like many) that a good jazz tone just meant rolling the tone back. But a wonderful jazz player I met got the best tone I had ever heard with a Wes Montgomery L5 into a Super, tone all the way up. It just had "the sound."

I agree. I love the sound of a Twin and Deluxe as well, but something about the alnico speakers of the Super give it some added character.

@@shred5I agree. I wonder if the 4x10” speakers help dial it in. Every FSR demo…sounds just right.

@@danvitco771 from my experience the biggest thing is the alnico magnets of the speakers, they have a different sound. It's like using a Vox with Alnico Blues vs Greenbacks.

That is my amp of choice. I have two supers. A 74 and a 69, and i have tried the reissues and have played original 66, 67 and 78s. The ones i got have been blackfaced althoug the 69 is 95% BF. What i can tell you is that the old ones are much more sweet. And they sound all very diferent depending the speakers. For instance cts alnicos or cts ceramics or vintage jensens (very bright) or with jbl ( just overkill). So my point...find an early silverface with cts alnicos and do whatever repairs it need and you will be amazed i think. The cts alnico have some midrange that i love with drives ts, klon and Blues power. With those drives you can crank fuzz faces in them and its just heaven. Srv? Put some ceramics. Jazz? Cts alnicos or any other sweet alnico. Try a vintage one thats all i say if love the reissue you will be in heaven with a good working one. All the best

Thanks Jack, that was great. I have the 65 reissue also. I happen to love with it with semi hollow and hollow bodies. The combination of my Gretsch Nashville into the SR is my favorite. I play it crystal clear.

Cannot comment on the reissue; never played one. But I do have an all original 65 Super Reverb that the tone is just to die for!! And the reverb and tremolo is second not none. Think I might get a Tube Screamer ( been wanting to get one anyway ) to see how it mates with it. Great video Jake!

I actually like the bright switch a lot for humbuckers. That said, my best results are with my Lollar Imperials which are fairly bright. But yeah as a fellow super reverb player (early model 68 silverface before they changed the circut), I can tell you are a pretty serious Super Reverb player. The jensen speakers work okay for milder overdriven sounds for me just fine (Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor and Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe) but if I turn the gain up too much, it becomes unusable - but it sounds great up to that point which is enough to play like Black Sabbath so I'm okay with that.

The reissues have significantly more midrange than the vintage ones due to a linear taper pot on the mids instead of the original log pot. I would be curious to see if swapping that pot out fixed your lower midrange problem

My first amp in 92 was a super reverb that was blackface rear and silver face on the front. (I think 71?) and I wish I kept it. I bought it from my dads trumpet player friend who used it as a vocal monitor for his wife in their big band. It had three blown speakers. I Had no idea about anything in those days. I had the speakers re-coned, and eventually took the head out and used it with a marshall 4-12 (again- had no idea) - in 95 I sold it to a blues guy who wasn't very good but just wanted the street cred. Im considering getting another one which brought me here. FYI - Couch Guitar straps have a limited line of a cadillac color that would go amazing with your 335!

Do they make a good pedal platform?
@robbyrob1180 Жыл бұрын
Just purchased a 1973 Silverface. Headroom. Takes pedals very nicely. Still has 3 7025 RCA, a 12AX7A RCA, a 12AT7, RCA and a 12AT7 GE tube with Magnavox output and rectifier tubes. Headroom. Got the OG CTS speakers. Got the TS808, Keeley Phat mod, MXR comp, DBA OD, Boss Chorus Ensemble, Swollen Pickle, little cheap delay with a Line 6 Verbzilla. Headroom. Sorry for wasting your time. Did I mention headroom? Heavy and weird looking. Remember when SUV's were known for tipping over due to its weird center of gravity? This amp is awkward in appearance and center of gravity just like those SUV's. I did not get the same feel with OD pedals as described in this video. Maybe these stock CTS speakers may have something to do with that. Not sure....

THATs the way to show how an amp sounds.
@JimMorrisonsBathtub Жыл бұрын
I put this in the category of amps that sound nice but aren't for me. It doesn't do as well with overdrive tones as a lot of other amps and for clean tones I'd rather go with a handful of other Fender amps which have a bit more character to them. I wouldn't buy one but I still like the sound when other people use them.

If you had to pick between Vibrolux and Super Reverb, which one?
@JackFossett8 ай бұрын
It's funny because I don't have the Vibrolux anymore, and yet if it weren't for nostalgic reasons, thats the one Id probably favor. I love my Super but the Vibrolux makes much more ergonomic sense. Less lower mids, easier to handle, same benefits.
@billsmith69628 ай бұрын
@@JackFossett thanks Jack, im trying to decide between a local Vibrolux silver face for $1050 and a super reverb (both reissues) for under 1K, but 3hr away. I don't gig, and the amp will just be used at home. If never gigging, does that change your opinion?
@Tonetwisters19 күн бұрын
You can put a 12AYR into V2 and tone down that volume. The EH 12AYR is a bit louder than most 12AYR's. And the NORMAL channel sounds the best. Switch to Webers ... get rid of those Jensens. I would go with the 12A150's ...

Some people think it takes high gain pedals well. That wasn’t really my experience. The Super Reverb shines in the clean/light gain territory.

@JackFossett Жыл бұрын
It's all relative. I remember a time when many guitarists wouldn't gig without a half stack. Nowadays with feasible digital options everyone wants to go smaller and lighter - but for a straight up answer, yes its big and not always necessary, but no its not too big and bulky. I played this one on a small stage a few weeks ago and it worked out just fine.
@steverolfeca Жыл бұрын
My dad and I used to gig out with his '67 Pro Reverb (same 40W head as the Super, but with two 12's) and my bass rig. We didn't mind load-in, but at the end of the night, we hated that thing. The Pro is easier to push because it's taller, but it's still an absolute pig. That said, the store where George Furlanetto (F-bass) used to work had a vintage blackface Pro that had the most amazing 3D tone, even with the volume almost off....
