Cheng Teoh When I was in 2nd grade, I found a full cart full of 2009 White Polycarbonate MacBooks. A large banner over it was labeled Goodwill. I asked about them, I was told they would be donated, a few weeks later, I found some in the trash. I didn’t take any though, because I was young.

I've always been a massive tech person, and my school knew I was smart, so they made me strip help 30 dell sff towers and wouldn't let me keep anything. Teacher also told me I didn't need to remove the CPU(As she pointed as the PSU). I was stuffing my pockets with 2GB DDR3 modules and i3's lmfaooo

I am glad to know that you are safe since you are one of the greatest KZbin video creators I am following and currently subscribed to. I am a big fan of yours from the Philippines. I am Jerico Alba, a 2nd Year Mass Communication student and I watch how you restore PCs and other devices using your iconic eucalyptus oil and your skills in restoration of PC components (e.g. the laptop from 1990s, and repairing many Macbooks). However, you told from one of your videos that you have so many laptops that you have restored and you have no idea of where and who to give it to? And have you mentioned that it can be sent to viewers? I am one of your greatest fans since I subscribed you when you still have less than 100K subscribers, and I love sending likes to your videos. I have also recommended you to my friends and luckily, they are now an avid fan of yours. I also learned a lot of things in restoring a PC and laptop. However, the profits I earn from fixing them only benefits to our daily livelihood, and I still struggle for online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for I only rent a laptop to use, just to pursue my education. These 2014 Macbook Airs have really nice construction and are super light. Too bad they have huge bezels. I also have a problem with mine that causes light orange "hotspots" on the screen. Doesn't make it unusable though.

I remember when my school were giving away a lot of Quad Core i5 Laptop's, not the best but still good enough, around 300 of them.... Me and my friend took about 12 of them with us, we did get permision to have ALL of them but they ended up just taking them to a tip in the end (if I remember rightly) which is a huge shame... most of them worked fine and would have been awesome to give to a school that can't afford tech or even give them away to children who need a laptop at home, especialy in 2020. this was 4 years ago though.

I mean one laptop could sell for around £50-100, multiply that by about 300 and you have a decent some of money. Guess schools are not as smart as they think hah

@@Retrohertz here in Germany where I live some schools don't even own their computers, but have some other company who handles their stuff. I have heard they change computers every three years or so and they have to be destroyed as they aren't allowed to sell them or give them away. I think there was an elementary school and they had desktops with i3s that had been used for a total of 80 hours.

3:00 We were on a vacation with my girlfriend last year, and the luggage (already cracked before) was completely obliterated after going through the airport. It was held together only by clean wrap we put over it - more a bag, than a case, at that point. Before going home I've used A LOT of adhesive tape - on the inside and outside of the bag. And it survived the trip back! Even stayed together in one piece. I worship packing tape as a deity now.

Nice repairing video. I love when stuff gets repaired. Also, even though I don't use Apple products, it's heartbreaking of how some of those laptops were so misused, and to think they are school issued, it is mind boggling. If I had one of these when I was younger, I would keep it very clean, because it would be my personal computer and the first ever laptop I could call mine was some outdated Acer that I had to put Kubuntu in to make it work, and even then it eventually died out beyond my powers.

I've been in the same boat. The parents had the option to pay for their students to hire a laptop from my school, but I already had my own that did well enough throughout my high school life and I treated well. That being said, if my parents ever did go ahead with hiring one, I'd be treating it like it's worth a million dollars because it's still someone else's property that I need to look after. It astounds and disgusts me how some students treated these poor Macbooks.

Same here, I used a Core 2 Duo Vaio until 2 years ago. It's still in pretty good condition, but the workloads of university (SolidWorks & similar) are too much for it so it had to be retired. I think someone's first computer should always be a crappy one, so they appreciate the upgrade when it comes...

Majority of government schools in QLD have to send the laptops back, I know of schools on the Sunshine Coast that send theirs back to Brisbane after there life. If you search “ex government laptops” you might be able to find some, also some of the laptops are listed on a website called “grays online” and they auction off ex government devices. Majority of them get auctioned off or recycled.

Well, I had to be different student when I was on high school. Yes we had our own laptop (not provided from the school) and we could use them instead of ,,old school pens and paper style". I still have my ,,school computer" it was Macbook pro retina 13 inch Late 2012 (because of voiceover built-in function and other accessibility functions) and its still in mint condition like brand new. Then I also have Macbook Air Mid 2017 just because of I am doing in IT and ecommerce business and don't need such powerful laptop. Then I have here iMac 2017 fully loaded (everything is maxed up as possible) this is my daily driver money making machine that I am using for virtualization of the other operating systems and for testing and error simulations to be able to resolve all of customers issues. For that purpose I need fast reliable machine. I bought it in May 2018 and I already re-thermal paste it using Arctic MX-4. After only 10 months (well, very though when it comes to load many times I hit on 64 GB RAM limits) and that was because of the temperatures rised up to 90°C - even through max fan speed 2700 rpm corrected by Macs Fan Control. After re-paste the iMac has even after another year still good temperatures between 45 - 60°C. Apple's thermal paste is really one of the cheapest garbage - is 25$ thermal paste really such expensive for almost 7 grand USD computer? Arctic guarantee 8 years of durability, well still I change it after 3 years or earlier when the temperatures will rise up again. But this thermal paste is verified from many years of usage. So I have no doubt it can reach 8-years of durability. When I changed it on my Macbook Pro from 2012 after 5 years of usage it was still durable more than enough. But lets go back to high school. Yes, some students are acting like pigs, really. I was allowed to use my own wireless keyboard and mouse on school computers. Although one day I just decided to do a good thing - take a couple school keyboards and mouses (of course with permission) and I given them nice wash. When I brought them back to school next day, the teachers were impressed how it looked like after my detailed cleaning. When I was at school I've cleaned my laptop every single day. I was known at school with that obscession (Well I just hate dirty electronics in general) so even teachers, when I needed help with something didn't washed their hands after use my computer because they knew its always clean. But well, that was funny and kind thing from them - they always washed their hands BEFORE they used my computer because they wanted to keep it clean! (haha). Yaya good school days are gone but I am still happy from the business I am built up on my own and that I am still running even during corona times. most times a backlight issue is on the motherboard itself especially if you have corrosion issues, the more voltage ran through a connector, the more easy it will corrode. the backlight pin on the lcd connector is often the first to corrode and cause a no backlight issue. easy to repair with flux an new solder

the screen backlight has a fuse on the motherboard, if it's blown then it's a black screen even if the screen is working fine
