That error message you got when trying to install a newer OS is due to the fact that Apple no longer releases a needed certificate for older OS. You can fix it by changing the date in terminal to a date about 2 years ago and then try to install the OS, it should now work. I got one of these (a Mid-2010) last week and so far it has been great. I upgraded the RAM to 8GB and the HDD to a 240GB SSD. Running Catalina 10.15.3 thanks to dosdude1’s Catalina Patcher, it still has a few hiccups, but those are due to the decade-old CPU 😅. I really do love the keyboard and the touchpad is best-in-class, even 10 years later. The only downsides are no Metal support and its size & weight, although the latter doesn’t bother me *too* much. Definitely want to see about reapplying the thermal paste, although mine doesn’t have the thermal issue yours experienced. The fans ramp up like they should, and I haven’t seen mine get above 80-something Celsius. Honestly for a $150 investment, this is such an excellent machine! I would highly recommend it if anyone wants to use it as a “casual” laptop or for school.

Hi Ian, i have a few of these and have high sierra on one and tried catalina as well... I got rid of catalina and stuck with high sierra becuz catalina has Much high cpu demands and was far less responsive and made the thing run hotter...this is with ssds and 8gb ram...PS: so many people use Too much thermal paste which leads to overheating... remember these cpus have a tiny surface and an amount the size of a grain of rice would be sufficent...with thermal paste ,less is Better...it becomes a Barrier that heat has to pass through and if its too thick, LESS het gets to the heatsink, not more... good luck!

Ive been using this exact MacBook up until today running both Mac OS X Mavericks (for that aqua nostalgia) and Mac OS Monterey. I originally got it for £28 out of an ebay auction. Threw in a 4GB RAM stick that i had lying around to bump it up to 6GB and installed a 500GB SSD to replace the 11 year old 250GB HDD. Still runs amazingly and i am even using the original battery. Now that it is 12 years old im very impressed how well the MacBook is holding up. Can’t wait to install the full 16GB of DDR3L 1066, all that headroom will be great for the amount of RAM intensive multitasking i do. Highly recommend this model to any students that need a reliable laptop that is comfortable to type on (the keyboard feels great) so long as they are comfortable with installing a couple easy upgrades if it doesn’t come with them already as well as an unsupported OS if they want better app compatibility as time goes on. The dosdude1 line od patchers and the OpenCore legacy patcher are definitely the best for a fully stable and easy to follow installation experience.

I bought one of these way back in 2010 and loved it. I used it for Logic Studio to make music and iMovie to make videos. I still have it and recently upgraded to an SSD and went to 4GB of RAM from the 2GB it had. I still use it for web browsing and email but these days I use my newer Retina MacBook for making music. These machines were built to last and Apple was really at their peak when they designed this laptop. I also had a Mac Mini but sold it to a friend in 2015. She is still using it as her main computer right now!

Here is a tip: Paper towels have a rather course surface and can cause scraping like sandpaper. I recommend only using microfiber towels, as you can use them on anything. I, too have this laptop. It's been running Manjaro for the past few weeks but I wanted an OS X machine again, so I loaded Snow Leopard via USB, then upgraded piece by piece to Catalina thanks to dosdude1's Catalina patcher. After that I replaced the thermal paste, unfortunately I had to drill out the bigger screw for the fan and the one that is located on top of the logic board. My logic board looked far worse than the one in the video but some brushing and some patience made it look as good as new. I also used Arctic MX4 thermal paste, when putting the logic board in I had problems with 2 of the thin cables which wouldn't stay put in their cable channels. After putting everything back together I realised I had forgotten the RAM sticks.... so the cover came back off and the RAM in. Finally I was able to press that little power on button and much to my surprise it started right up! Albeit a bit slow in the beginning, my 6,1 Macbook late 2009 with upgraded SSD and 8GB RAM looked better than ever, and Catalina dark theme really makes the macbook look so much more modern! Bought this thing for €100 a few years back and it's grown so much on me that I don't want to miss it ever!

If you didn't know, The "damaged" install is just telling you the date is wrong. Since Apple doesn't want you to be able to install specific operating systems after the end of life date..... I had to deal with that with a hackintosh once. I just changed the date around the time the OS was released and it worked. I don't know how to do that on a real mac though.

Not after a few years, hell, I've see better looking paste in 10 year old machines!

When I go away its my Go-To machine, with the SSD and RAM upgrade it sill feels snappy and for most tasks it has enough grunt. I can still even edit RAW files taken with my DSLR though the export speed of multiple files is held back by the aging CPU. All in all this is still a great machine, its just a shame it wont run current OSX, Also, you can reset the battery health if its reporting incorrectly which I have to do every now and then on a few older macbooks I own that dont see much usage.
