Hips and Pelvis
Working with the whole pelvic area is hugely important in bioenergetics as it is the area pertaining to our sexual aliveness and much of our natural vitality. In most people, tension around the hips and pelvis are quite severe mostly due to varying degrees of sexual trauma. Any feelings of “not being okay” about our sexual desire, our drive for pleasure, or acting sexy, tends to create holding patterns in the pelvic region.
As you can imagine, neurotic holding patterns in this area create disproportionately large negative effects within us, affecting the way we show up and relate to others. There are so many ways that we end up disassociating from our natural aliveness and sexuality but here I will mention just a few. One way is that we cut ourselves off from any sexual feelings, sometimes completely stopping any feeling in the lower part of our body and focusing all our attention upwards into our minds. This tends to lead people to have overly sexualized minds, filled with all types of fantasies, while their body remains a “no-no” and “naughty” area that is not allowed to be felt. This disintegration manifests itself in many neurotic ways.
When our pelvis moves naturally, freely, and spontaneously in this way, we too will naturally move more gracefully, express our vitality, and calmly experience sexual feelings. This absolutely doesn’t mean we must act sexually on those feelings but just that we can be aware of them and experience them without inhibition. This is a huge step forward for most people who have been sexually stifled, traumatized, or even abused. Thankfully, there are many hip and pelvic exercises that will gradually free this area up and leave us feeling liberated.
