I like Robert Sapolsky's lecture on schizophrenia and depression much more. He gets me to the edge of my seat with some of his Behavioural Biology lectures, and I already know the material from my university years LOL

I really like how energetic this professor is (tone of voice, anecdotes). Greetings from Panama from a psychology student, your video is helping me for a future presentation on schizophrenia.

I love this lecture and this professor. He addressed my same question about always believing that these symptoms are only attributed to psychological disorders when in fact could be part of their spiritual awakening process. I love and enjoy studying psychology :)

I tend to think of schizophrenia as like a constant psychological feedback loop like what you get with audio sometimes. When the microphone picks up off the speaker output and just makes this either piercing screech, or an onimous howl. The disorganized schizophrenia is an outlier to that, but the paralyzed and more manic kinds are like that.

I'm not sure if different types of schizophrenia should not be deemed or categorized different mental health disorders. Unlike in the movie, John Nash believed that he was receiving messages from outer space that gave him signals of what to do on earth. Like many Paranoid Schizophrenics, Nash had 2 voices which narrated his life in negative ways to drive him to some of his delusions. The one thing he would never admit is that his life was completely changed by anti-psychotics. He claimed to be off the drugs since the 70's but all of a sudden cured himself in the late 80's just using his mind. Obviously, that is not true. Sorry for flying off the rails with this comment.

If you have got the smarts, then your mind may make a quantum leap. Or, if your mind is simply on the path of truths, rather than be on the path of the mere beliefs, you too may make a quantum leap. What comes next, is horrendous. What you will encounter will torment you, degrade you, cut off your outward connections to the world, and all this while you are being made a complete fool of in front of that very same world. If on the other hand, your mental abilities are limited, you will not be touched. Mental abilities may be limited if you are for instance, a psychiatrist. This is because you are confined within the barriers of your specific expertise. Such people can not see the bigger truth, all due to this presence of extreme confinement.

Helpful until he started talking about spiritual causes. I believe in spiritual influences, but his description wasn't very good. The point is that, if a person is displaying abnormal behaviour IN THE CONTEXT of cultural expectations about behaviour (even in a culture where spiritual influences are seen as real), that means it is highly likely a physical/psychological ILLNESS (as opposed to a normal spiritual experience). Some cultures believe in demonic possession, and when they treat the person for it, the spiritual remedies help. This is because the behaviour aligned with expectations about spiritual experiences. With illnesses like schizophrenia, spiritual remedies fail to help, but chemical ones do help, which demonstrates that it is physical. Just like ruling out other things (like the thyroid condition mentioned), one can rule out the chemical and physical causes by trying medication. If it doesn't work, try spiritual remedies. Or both at the same time. Its easy to rule out spiritual causes by trying a safe remedy and seeing its effect. Problem is, if you get it wrong, and the person needs medication, the delay or interruption in treatment will result in more pain.

Most Christians believe schizophrenia to be demonic possession yet no verse in the bible points to this they'll usually use verses about deceiving thoughts, which ironically is now all schizophrenics most hear voices or see things in my opinion schizophrenia is just awareness of the unseen realm which is also mentioned in the bible. Christ could had easily been classified as a schizophrenic he was actually speaking with the devil when he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights same with Moses and the burning bush. In my opinion those instances have more of a similarity with schizophrenia. I am Christian and I do have schizophrenia I thought it left me until I seen a woman with sky blue glowing eyes with the same light glowing in her nostrils as well as her mouth . I don't take meds I've been off meds since 2017 during this time I was able God willing to quit smoking, loss weight as well as lift weights, got a job my first job and read the Bible daily

I Have been diagnosed as having a schizoaffective personality which to my understanding is NOT A DISORDER but rather a personality I have had all my Life! People who have certain diagnosed personalities do not have DISORDERS DAMN IT! We all are genetically bound in our personalities! These so called professors and what have you talk the talk but have not walked the walk!

Marco Fernandez-Guarda Well, just tell me how ANy Personality can be a disorder since the issue revolves around always having said personality since birth? They call it genetic traits.
